Yes Manny,

When I first met Al, he was barely sixteen and a great devotee of Latin jazz and he was the one who turned me on to Flora Purim, Airto and much more.

He is one baaad dude.

Hello again, friend Bobby Eli,

Thanks for your response. I don't have say it you before, because i send my previous post some before to come to sleep and until now i'm not connected again.
I don't knows if you see a pick of Alphonso I posted in the Anthony Jackson thread, where he seems as a very teenager (perhaps he was 16 or 17 years old on this pick!).

I'm wondering if you have also worked with Airto & Flora. I likes a lot some of their work as Fourth World and Flora's super latin-funk "Humble People". I discovered Flora's nice voice in "Return To Forever" by Chick Corea, also in my teens. What good times when practically ALL the music (from Cat Stevens to MFSB) was so spiritual!

Peace & Soul Food (and fusion!)

Hi Manny,
I never worked with the aformentioned artists, per se, but I did play on an album that Vince Montana produced for Astrid Gilberto in 1977 in NYC.
Will Lee was on bass and Alan Schwartzberg played drums.
I forgot who the rest pf the players were.

Your right on with the comment about Alphonso as one BAAAD DUDE!! I first caught Alponso in Detroit in the mid 70's when he came through town with Weather Report. I had seen Weather Report twice prior to this with a different rhythm section. They were great but with Alfonso it was a whole new groove. I was mesmerized by this lanky kid laying down the meanest funk lines. A sight to behold. Some live Weather Report has recently been released. My favorite cuts are with Alfonso laying it down.

Hello, Cisco!

I see your post is number one and I think you are (possibly) new. Pardon me if you are more old (from the old period of this forum) and simply i don't remember your name. Anyway, recieve my friendly welcome.
I'm glad because, appart from "strictly" soul lovers, here are also good "fusion" lovers as you (Alphonso, George Duke, Ramsey Lewis,...). I think ALL IS SOUL.

Peace!

Thanks Manny,

You are correct, I am new. In fact that was my first post. Thanks for the friendly welcome. I have enjoyed reading the posts over a year. Great content. Not only do I love soul music but I have had the opportunity to see many great jazz, blues, R&B,rock and classical artists. I will never forget my Mom insisting that I attend a Duke Ellington concert with her when I was 13 years old. Jazz wasn't cool to me and what kid wanted to go to a concert with his Mom anyway? Well Manny, that concert blew me away and changed my outlook on music. I started searching and finding out about James Brown, BB King, Miles, etc. You mentioned Astrid Gilberto, well the folks had some Stan Getz LP's and I was hooked on the Bossa Nova and Samba style. My teenage friends thought I went off the deep end. The search never ends! If there is good music I will try and go hear it. Tonight I will get my rock and roll fix as I go see The Dead at Pine Knob. Peace

Hi again, Cisco!

(If you prefer we call you Greg, say it, please)

What a good stuff you tolds, friend!
You have had the honour to see live the creator of "Caravan"! And, in some way, IMHO the creator of the fusion, because the Duke introduced so classical and latin elements in Jazz music.
I think also that a true music lover "should to be" eclecthical. I admit Soul got feeling, energy and capacity to transmit universal messages. But i likes "symphonic" soul more than "southern" because his eclecthical elements.
I'm from Spain and the most similar to a soul or jazz artist I saw playing live when I was a kid was Los Bravos. In the radio, Pop Tops, classic Stax tracks, Edwin Hawkin's "O Happy Day", etc. I think are responsible for my "first" taste: SOUL.
But today I heard from the soundtrack of Le Cirque Du Soleil "Quidam" to Vivaldi passing for Mike Oldfield, Philly Sound, Lonnie Liston Smith, Fania All-Stars,spanish Carlos Nez or Carmen Lundy. The common denominator it's some intangible. In the soul music case we call "soul" or this got or don't got "soul"; in the other styles i don't knows what name have. And when I think If we lived 200 years never ended of discovering more and more hide musical treasures...!

Peace & Soul Food
