Over the weekend, I saw the Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards on Trio. The first award went to Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. I noticed that neither acknowledged the other and as the audience was clapping after Barrett said his speech, that Norman said something to the effect that that's enough. Michael McDonald was the presenter of the award and he had an awkward look on his face. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before (failed to check the archives) but what's the beef between the two. They wrote some beautiful music/songs together. It's too bad that nearly thirty years has passed and folks can't be civil to one another. "You Make Your Own Heaven And Hell Right Here On Earth" |

Something happened at Motown Detroit between these once close guys. I never quite knew what the problem was but remember Norman telling me he was going to show Barrett that he didn't need him. In a way he was right. Norman did some pretty respectable work on his own. |
