Do most people here consider him rock or soul or both? Regardless I agree with him--he has not been given his props always. He is sensational--his musicianship, energy, talent,courage--dont tell me he didnt influence Prince(even if just the hair!), Elvis, James, Jerry Lee etc--a man way ahead of this time!! |

Little Richard can be whatever he wants to be. "I don't know what you've got, but it's got me", is one of the all time great soul recordings. His version of "Baby what you want me to do" for (I think) Modern records proves he can cut it as a blues man too. 'He got what he wanted, but lost what he had' for Mercury records is great R&B/Gospel, and of course we in the UK love the records he did for Okeh. On a similar note, Chuck Berry is more than a rock n roller. Listen to 'Worried life blues', which I think to be the best version of this song, and also 'I've got to find my baby' is a good uptempo big band R&B effort. Keith Herschell - London |

He was fantastic live, on Sunday night. Started off by climbing onto the piano, declaring himself beautiful and 72 years old. He's got a great sense of humor and gave us a lot of laughs. His songs for the evening were mainly R&R but he gave us a fantastic rendition of "Directly from your heart". REAL SOUL MUSIC. He declared on several occasions that he was the instigator of R&R. His voice sounded close to that on his recordings. Truly amazing. I also love his Okeh recordings but obviously they would never feature in his act. |

The Original Prince, the originator, the instigator, the innovator, Little Richard is indeed an icon, they told him that they heard him knocking but he couldn't come in.......he kicked the dam door down ! He has got to be the Father of both Prince and Morris Day. This was a man who was way, way, ahead of his time. God bless him.... Kdubya |

About 6 months ago, Little Richard's cd for Kids became the new number 1 kid's Cd in my house, replacing La Vida Mickey and has remained there ever since. My girls, especially the 5 year old can't get enough and I love to watch her doing the Hokey Pokey to LR's version which is played slightly faster and very similar to his verion of Keep A Knocking. I must admit that having them dance to this before bed time, in an attempt to wear them out has backfired so often that I don't even try anymore. After a couple of LR's songs, they'd get so amped they were literally dancing in their beds as the hummed the different songs to each other. I remember him speaking of his days before fame. He said early in his career he had a job washing dishes. "I washed so many dishes, I started to call myself Little Plate." |

Destruction He mentioned the dishes at the show too. I think he said that "Tutti frutti" released him from the dishes. LOL. My type of humor. |

David, Did he also mention the story of teaching Paul McCartney how to imitate his trademark 'wooooooooo'. It doesn't translate well in ink...but it ends with, "by God I think he's got it." |

Rather if Little Richard is Rock 'n Soul, Blues or Soul, he's considered Pop. Not because his music is pop and played on every station on the stereo. What I mean by pop...he's popular to everyone. Don |

Little Richard indeed wrote most of hits. Just look for the "Penniman" next to the song titles. |

I saw the bio movie with LEON and there was a part where Bumps Blackwell, a lyricist, and him had to re-write the lyrics to TUTTI-FRUTTI because they were rated R...were most of his songs that way? |

The original lyric was "Tutti fruitti-good booty"! yes , there were a lot of songs of the day with "bawdy lyrics" especially in the twenties and thirties, and especially in female blues singers. Nasty stuff!!! |

I remember Esquerita-reading about him--kind of a lounge Little Richard--I think he has a cult following-he died not too long ago. PS I see Mr Richard is appearing with his "friend" Chuck Berry in LI. SO much for Richard's retirement-thank God!! |

Larry Williams, Lord Luther and Bunker Hill were also very influenced by Little Richard. Although Mr. Penniman claims he was the architect of R&R, he stole the blueprints from those that influenced him(see Nick Tosches' "Unsung Heroes of Rock and Roll") but listen to "You Keep A Knockin'" and you know that no one has ever, EVER done it better! |

Maybe its ulitmately impossible to single out one person but Little Richard must get credit for bringing it big to the public and having the guts to be himself and rock and roll! |

Jimmy Mack, I'd give Chuck Berry every bit as much credit as Little Richard(tho Chuck appears to have ripped most of his schtick from T-Bone Walker, just as Elvis was a second-rate xerox...err...photo negative of Wynonie Harris)but I'd much rather have a beer and a pizza with Mr. Penniman as Chuck would probably drink the beer and hit me over the head with the bottle. BTW, anyone out there see Chuck's "Golden Showers of Hits" video? |
