I think Mr Chandler is a hugely underrated talent. I saw him on PBS not too long ago and he still has IT. I think Duke of Earl marginalized him some. His voice is fantastic.

You're absolutely right about 'Duke Of Earl' Jimmy! It was such a huge Pop hit for him that I think it's overshadowed all of his other (and much better IMO) hits. Cheesy "Oldies Radio" has not helped matters either. You'd think that this man was a one hit wonder by the way they've ONLY played 'Duke Of Earl" through the years.

My favorite Gene Chandler tunes are 'Show Me The Way To Go' with Barbara Acklin, 'Groovy Situation', 'I Fooled You This Time' and of course 'Get Down'. I'd love to see him perform live one day!

Oh yeah Jimmy. I've seen that website and I also was suprised at how Duke Of Earl oriented it is! Turned me off! I hate it how great talents like Gene are attached to one single song despite all of the other excelent material that they recorded. And usually the one that they are indentified with is not even their best! LOL.

I guess Gene doesn't mind it because 'Duke Of Earl' has probably given him more work and money than all oh his other hits combined! It still makes me sad though.

"Rainbow '65"(LIve) is Killer and always loved "Groovy Situation". I've been hearing "Good Times" alot on XM Satellite radio station Soul Street. Yes, I agree that "Duke of Earl" overshadowed his career but then he played it up by dressing the part also.

Tony, you're so right about the Duke Of Earl bit. I saw Gene on a PBS special and he had the cape, eye glass and tuxedo thing going on. As if he were the real Duke Of Earl. LOL. I guess it's his trademark shtick but I wish he wouldn't identify himself so closely with just that one song.

Later on some disco stuff like 'Get Down' and one his last charted singles with a great melody :
I'll Make The Living If You Make The Loving Worthwhile

My own correction!! - it was written by Gene with Bernice Williams, the group's manager at the time who also wrote Night Owl for them, and one group member Earl Edwards.

b/w "Lonely In Love" for Gene's Whatever's Fair, Inc, and Arranged by Mike Terry for the Philips/Mercury label. The flip "Lonely In Love", arranged by I'm not for sure?

Hi Don. I wish my 45s were with me so I could check. A ffew of those Bobby Huttons were recorded in Chicago, and Mike Terry didn't arrange them. I think "Lonely in Love" was one of them, but not sure. Joshie also brought Mike Terry to Chicago to record on some of their sessions. I like ALL the Philips-Blue Rock Bobby Hutton stuff very much, but "Lonely in Love" is my favourite.

As for Gene, -he's one of my favourite all-time artists. ALL his Constellation stuff was great, as well as his Chess and VJ product. I liked "Duke of Earl" and "Nite Owl" a lot, as I like the 1962-63 sound. Many of his Brunswick sides were great, too. I like his Curtis Mayfield/Carl Davis recordings best.

He wore his silk suit, cape, top hat and cane in most of his appearances after "Duke of Earl" became hot, and wore them for at least a few years after, if I remember correctly.

He produced some good soul, later in his career.

"Duke Of Earl" was recorded at Universal Recording Studios at 46 E. Walton St. in Chicago on August 30, 1961 and released as Vee-Jay single 461 on November 5, 1961. Peaked at #1 on Billboard's R&B and pop charts. Sold 2 million copies, but was not officially certified Gold because there was no RIAA audit. "Duke Of Earl" marked Carl Davis' debut as a producer.

I saw Gene a few years back as part of the Royal Soul Revue. Other acts on the bill were Jerry Butler, Lloyd Price, Percy Sledge, Chuck Jackson, Ben E. King, and Irma Thomas. They were all backed by G.E. Smith and his band, and the MC was Peter Wolf.

Each act did four or so of their biggest hits, and then handed off to the next act. On the night I went, Gene was the closing act. He sang DUKE OF EARL (of course), RAINBOW, GROOVY SITUATION, and ROCKIN' ROBIN.

He really put on a good show. Having never really paid much attention to him before, he was sort of a new discovery for me. The next day, I went out and bought a compilation of his greatest hits, and have since become a big fan.

I like "Groovy Situation" the best of all his
recordings. The only thing I remember him
doing that I didn't like was a cover version
of James Brown's "There Was A Time", issued
at the same time as the original. In my
opinion it was not a Gene Chandler song.
Dee Dee Sharp once told me a funny story when
in 1962 she had a date with Gene Chandler.
She was 16 so her mother only let her go if
she took her brother along who was 12 at the
time. Gene showed up at her house wearing
his Duke of Earl suit. I think they went to
the movies.

Good Morning,

I have one Gene lp on VEE-JAY titled There Was A Time, the backgroung cover looked like the picture was taken on the Gold Coast. Personal I liked his Constellation sides, the only single I have left is "Bless Our Love" b/w "London Town" from the label. At one time I had all the lp's and singles from every label he's ever recorded for. I think too his VJ is totally awsome, I'll be truthful I never paid much attention to his Chess records that much, though I had them at one time. His Murcury & Brunswick product was more in tuned of what was happen? I was listening to a interview conducted by PJ Willis of Kennedy King College's WKKC 89.3 FM on Tuesday's from 8PM-2AM about a month ago, and Bobby Hutton was his guest. He talked about his career and I heard stuff played on him when Ms. Joshie Jo Armstead produced him. I think PJ spin some of his ABC sides and alot more. Check Artist Jo Armstead for his records played that nite. Now I remember also was "Ooo Baby" and "That's How Heartaches Are Made". Also he has a new CD coming out locally. I think Herb Kent "The Cool Gent" will like this one to play at his steppin' sets. He also told another DJ who butted in on the interview, and Bobby was telling him about The Northern Soul and othr places and Soulful Detroit. He didn't get to mention alot but, also told this other that people from abroad know about him and be checking his website broadcast out. So RP (Memphis Slim Trim) behave yourself for now on, ok?. People I recall meeting at the Armstead home was; Bobby, Ruby, Ashford & Simpson, Mike Terry, I think Little Jimmy amd Smokey.

Chancellor, I know he's a member of Soul-Patrol.COM. I use to hear alot about the man though I never met him, except for the time when he re-released "Raindow" in the mid 70's (?). Many session singers all would say he'd make a good session singer too respectfully. He brings out the best in his singers (I never heard of anyone saying he's a taskmaster) and musicians, I guess is why next to Jerry "Iceman" Butler as always having the best records ever made in Chi.

Hello DVD Mike, sorry I didn't get a chance to post on your picture collection past thread. Sorry, cause I been busy runnin' errands like a mad man posessed. Though, I swore on the Armstead thread that you looked that that older kid?. My Apologies sir. I did post on 2 of your threads about Sam Cooke. The only known artist to have did justice to Cook's material is Rod Steward he's my favorite blue-eyed soul sanger. Mike, I really dug your Clovers thread awhile ago. Are U sure, sure, they recorded & released all them songs. They have got to be the only doowopper's I know to have that many songs on the market or not, they should be in the genis book?

Reese, I know that had to be a good show with all those artist. I would have been curious to see Chuck that never got his due. GE and his band backing up all these greats, I bet ya he always have a hot band. Yeah, wasn't he with Hall & Oats in the 80's as their guitarist, I dug that band record or live. They don't make great bands like that anymore.

Hi Randy, are you still listen to those PEOPLE singles & LP's nowadays?. That was what I was comfirming with you and bro Tony about? I almost accidently creep by me the Hodes, James, Smith & Crawford thread that's now in the archives..check it out.

Gene's releases on Checker/Chess included To Be A Lover and Fooled You This Time...two of his best IMO although he and Carl Davis came up with so many good recordings esp on Constellation.

Hi Randy, I bet that date Dee Dee had with Gene caused quite a stir in the neighborhood. If her brother was 12 at the time, they still probably still lived in North Philly at the time as her "12 year old" brother was in my room in elementary school. Cute story. LOL!
