PS--what does white have to do with it--the Shangri-las are white as was Dusty Springfield.

I think the Shangri-Las and Angels both had a "pop" sound. I think "I Adore Him" is more of a soul sounding song than "My Boyfriend's Back". I think Dusty Springfield had a soul sound -not a pop sound. There were Caucasian girls groups that had a soul sound, but I wouldn't class the Angels, and CERTAINLY NOT The Shangri-Las, among them. There were also African-American girls groups that had a pop sound. That didn't mean that they couldn't sing soulfully. Several of those groups' lead singers sang soulfully when with other groups, as single artists, or when their producers wanted them to have more of a soul sound.

Hello Everyone.

I think Robb_K has put it quite well. I don't consider either THE ANGELS or THE SHANGRI-LAS to be R&B .. however .. having said that .. I really rate highly some of the SHANGRI-LAS records .. notably .."Walking In The Sand", "Past Present and Future" and "Give Him A Great Big Kiss".

THE ANGELS I only know through "My Boyfriends Back" which has never appealed to me much .. however .. it seems that their lead singer went on to record as JESSICA JAMES AND THE OUTLAWS who's "We'll Be Making Out" got some NS exposure here in England. However, I think that was more for the backing music than for the vocals.

The following link may tell you more ..
