SoulSister, Let me say this, no one has ever given the first reigning Queen her proper due. Her life was cut short, but she was by far a undisputed Queen. No she did not have the vocal stamina of Ree-Ree, but she was a very gifted entertainer who like Lady Day, Dorothy Dandrige, Lena Horne etc.. paved the way for future generations of Black Female entertainers. My Mom "hipped" me to Mrs Washington when I was young, I still play her signature album "Dinah 62" today.....yes she was a Queen indeed........ and there were some who followed in her immediate footsteps.....Nancy Wilson and Esther Philips....grand singers all...... when i try to put this in perspective today....Gladys, Patti & Aretha are certainly stellar......cause when I hear Ashanti, Alicia Keys, Beyonce....as compared to what....talented yes, but they are not in the same league as the great ladies of soul.......and they probably never will be........

Hey Kdubya;
Are you kidding, NO ONE is better than Dinah's interpetation of a lyric! EVERY female vocalist tried to style their pattern after her, and some after Jimmy Scott!! For real!!
I'm with you K!

What about Ms. Dorothy (Misty Blue) Moore ? That Lady is another Soul Rooted singer, if I've ever heard one...and I'd also like to add Oleta Adams, Rena Scott, Mavis Saples, Millie Scott, Cheryl Lynn, Brenda Holloway, Sharon Paige, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, and Layla Hathaway. We still hear about George, but whatever happened to Gwen McCrea ?...and Fontella (Soul Of A Man) Bass?

Great ones medusa-u go that per Dorothy-and Brenda is one of my all time faves-she is still stealing shows and Motown should re-sign her. Fontella recorded a cd not too long age that I believe got vg reviews-I think it may have been more blues oriented. And I want a new Cheryl Lynn cd out fast!!

Jimmy Mack, in the latest ITB, there's a review -not very enthusiastic-of Shirley Brown's new Malaco CD, "Woman enough".
Medusa, in the same ITB, I read that Gwen McCrae is now singing Gospel, and she has a new CD "I'm not worried", on LewMar. I'm a fan of Gwen and I've tried to locate it, but with no success. Maybe somebody can help me ? Thanks in advance.
