Greetings All,

Okay - you all - and for once and for all - who is/was the King of Soul? The King of R&B? The King of Blues? The King of Jazz? The King of Pop? The King of Rock? The King of Gospel? The King of Rap? The King of Hip-Hop. The King of Ballads? No disrespect to the ladies mind you.

http://www.rhino.com/store/Pro ductDetail.lasso?Number=78300

http://www.rhino.com/blackhist ory/bh03_sounds.lasso

I have heard for years that Solomon Burke was the King of Soul - and that James Brown was the Godfather. I've also heard - that King Curtis and the Memphis connection is/was the King of Soul. And then there is Sam Cooke. I'll tell 'ya!

And should the Kings be named according to what part of the country they are/were from - therefore having multiple ones? I.e., Philly - Memphis - Chicago - New Orleans - New York and last but not least - good 'ole Detroit?

Will this debate never end? LOL! And was David Ruffin the best R&B singer ever like some believe?

All,

Hey Mr. Weldon. I see your song "Yes I'm Ready", made the list. I still love that song.

Btw - I heard an up-to-date version on the "Nothing But Motown" station the other day. Had you anything to do w/that one - and who was singing? It was more up tempo. Danke'.

King of Soul? It's too hard for me to name just one person, but I'd vote for Otis Redding.

King of Country? Again, very difficult to name just one person, but Hank Williams Sr. or George Jones would be my choices.

If we're talking about the King of Soul than I gotta go with JAMES BROWN! No other man dominated the music biz in the 60's and early 70's like The Godfather! Not Marvin Gaye, not Donny Hathaway, not Stevie Wonder not anybody.

I'm not sure why people are always so reluctant to give him his props?

Rodmann,

I would never be foolish enough to question James' domination of Black music. IMHO, James music moved beyond what I consider Soul, especially the Polydor stuff.

Satipe,

Though he's not one of my top ten fave blues guys, he's probably more deserving of the title King of Blues than anyone else I can think of today.

I wasn't pointing the finger at any one in particular Destruction. I just think that time hasn't been as kind to James as it has to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, etc. Today he's seen as some sort caricature or character instead of a serious artist. It's a shame because he was THE KING plain and simple he recordings hold up remarkably well and still sound fresh. Love him or hate him, you can't deny that he had 60's and early 70's Black music in a chokehold. Nobody else even came close!

The musical universe is made up of many kingdoms, Jazz, blues, R&B, Funk, Soul, rap, hip-Hop, there are a few kings and queens out there, not to mention a few Princes, Princesses, Dukes, Earls and Lords....There is a place for MOST artist, not every artist is a king even if they were an early pioneer....but MOST are a part of Music Royalty...it may be easier to break down artist that way. There are artist out there that some may be ready to crown king, but they got their ispiration from someone else and their music is a reflection of that person...and some artist will admit that they aren't a king or queen and point to all the elements that influenced them to be what they are today. James Brown is not a blues guy...so it's not surprising that someone wouldn't name him in their top 10. Prince isn't a king, but in my opinion he's royalty. Aretha Franklin...Queen....Natalie Cole...royalty but no queen. This is a very interesting thread....but ones opinion deserve a lot of thought and a vast knowledge of musical history in order to give a honest and valid answer.

Greetings All,

LOL NY-DELL - I was just getting ready to post to this thread. You have a very interesting take on the question - indeed. And I love your using the word "Royalty."

Thank you all for responding.

Diana Ross is royalty - but so is Mary Wilson - IMO. Without all three of the original Supremes - there wouldn't have been the Supremes - for real - so Florence Ballard also has her place in the royal box.

I have been wondering about the Jazz king. For instance - is/was it Ramsey Lewis - Cannonball Adderly - George Duke, etc?

Rod and Kb,

I know u weren't picking on me Rod, but it's weird that KB stepped right in with the point that I was going to come back and sharpen, which is that although Funk is more commonly associated with George Clinton, James is the true King.

"and you can bet your bottom dollar
you're never hear me holler
I do the best that I can't do...."

followed pure unadulterated, uncut, joyous, funk.

My boss and I used to quote James at our branch and project meetings. When presented with a project we didn't want to do, our response would be, "We're people, we're just like the birds and the bees. We'd rather die on our feet, Than be livin' on our knees"

My fave James recollection is earning comic book money from my best friends older sisters by doing my James Brown imitation when I was around 7 or 8.
There was a Time. thx, kb.

you did make some ok picks regardless to those personal tastes.

James Brown had 118 R&B hits from 1956 - 1995. Aretha Franklin is the top female vocalist with 94 R&B hits from 1960 - 1994.

In addition to James Brown I PERSONALLY enjoy Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes and Barry White much more than Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder or Donny Hathaway. Just because I personally enjoy Bobby Womack, Isaac Hayes and Barry White the most I would never say that Bobby, Isaac and Barry were The Kings (AKA most popular of all-time).

The same goes for the woman. Linda Jones, Judy Clay and Patti LaBelle are all women that could blow that I enjoy very much. I still couldn't list any of them as The Queen over Aretha Franklin if I was speaking for everyone. When it comes to Soul (1960 - 1975) James and Aretha were the King and Queen. Period.

I'm sorry I misunderstood your topic Don. I was under the impression that we were really listing who was The King instead who we personally like the best!

Well said everyone, now didn't Mr. Brown record for a record label "King", he also used to have his "Jerome" bring him his cape and drape it over his shoulders doing Please, Please, Please, ........I think we have to discuss the media influence at some point, but since most titles are singular....well hell, James will probably always be considered the King and likewise for Aretha........then after time passes there will most likely be another.......guess thats how "they" made Mike the "King of Pop" but we all know that on the other side of the coin there is only one King........and I aint hating but I just tend to stay away from titles that are not deserved in the first place....what next the Potenate of Neo-Soul ????? LOL and anyway how come all these potential self or media annoited Kings and Queens have so many dam issues ...what about R.Kelly, Whitey Houston, Bobby Brown, MJ, enough already......like I have said before James and Ree-Ree have earned theirs, Patti, Gladys and all the other royal subjects have earned theirs...now thats what I think is real cool.."Royalty"........end of story. I bet that would be one bad ass kingdom to live in.......and we all know what a great variety of subjects that the King could put in the dungeon for acting up..........hmmmm now that I think about it Ray Charles was probably the real King....now he's gone ................forgetaboutit. ....

Don, Fats Waller, Cab Calloway and Jelly Roll Morton were good. I guess if I had to pick my personal favorite male vocalists from that era they would be Count Basie's Jimmy Rushing (Mister 5 by 5) and Billy Eckstine.

Kdubya, you're right about Ray Charles. I think he was The King in the 50's and early 60's and James Brown sort of picked up where he left off. Ray moved on to other musical genres instead of exclusively Black music.

Eli, I'm feelin' your list as well!

Kdubya:
Well buddy I haven't heard from you in a while. Well yes I agree with you....oh what a kingdom it would be....but there are bad guys every where....who would you put on a list of the bad boys/girls of music....talented...but bad....not royalty....just the ones who march to their own music.....those who some may call weird....but are just living in their own world....Would Michael Jackson, George Clinton, Prince, Macy Gray, be on your....by the way Kdubya....Let the band play on......

NY-Dell,Rodman and SDF, it's about time for a stage play about this very topic......Ray Charles The King, James the future King....Lady Day, then Aretha,in fact lets have a world where theres a land of a thousand dances and different kings and queens having showtimes at the Apollo for the right to rule the planet......whew I'd love to see Little Richard go up against Prince.....Tempts versus Dramatics for the seats at the round table...wait a minute what the heck would we call it "Lord of The Kings" if they can do it in Hollywood we can do it too......any writers out there...Lets see Miles Davis could be the wizard, Gladys and Patti could be the good witches....R Kelly could be the prisoner behind the mask........Michael could be a Gollum.........ROTFLOL........ ....ok, ok, sounds like a movie...think I'll put in a call to Disney.............

Don, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who enjoys Jimmy Rushing's singing! He recorded some good stuff in his day. I wish that more people today were familiar with him.
