Hey All, I read an article by Angie Stone last night, and noted that she called D'Angelo the "Prince" of Soul music. Do you all agree? LOL at some of the things Angie puts out there - and especially when she orders that beer. I love his music - and truly loved "Brown Sugar." How would you rate him - and where has he been? The below bio on him states that he has one of the smoothest falsetto voices out here today. He does sound good singing Smokey's "Crusin'" - indeed. What's up w/him? http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts /homeentertainment/story/0,128 30,1256827,00.html http://launch.yahoo.com/artist /artistFocus.asp?artistID=1006 389 (Message edited by gogogirl on July 14, 2004) |

"Prince of Soul?" I don't know about that. I think D'Angelo and Maxwell are talented but they lack a little something compared to their earlier counterparts. |

I don't know...I mean he has his own style and he can PLAY his own instruments, but I don't know about that title. IMO, He hasn't done enough musically to earn that. |

Hey All, Well - I do declare! I love Maxwell also. So if D'Angelo is not the new Prince of Soul - then who is? That is - if there is such a crooner. "Kem" is a great singer - so may haps he is the new Prince. I heard his CD was still kicking butt. I bought it months ago - and I like it. I suppose the word "King" is out the question for these young chaps - 'eh? LOL! |

Hey Zebop, catch Maxwell live and then tell me what you think......this guy can flat out perform. His show reminds me of days gone by such as artists like Marvin and Jackie Wilson, he is very good at what he does. I aint calling anybody anything because most of these new cats aint been around long enough for me to form that type of opinion........and until they do, what we got will suffice. Kdubya, I never paid much attention to Maxwell until I heard his song (though I hear it is a remake) "This Woman's Work". It was featured in the film "Love and Basketball" What a beatiful song!! The way he delivered the vocals, and in a studio setting at that, was amazing. The types of emotion that he displayed in his delivery on that recording are usually reserved for live settings.. So after hearing that one, I'm a believer in what Maxwell can do! |

I Love D'Angelo and his music. I would love to catch him live but it seems his recordings and tourings are few and far between.. |

Kdubya, hey, I'll try to catch Maxwell certainly don't dislike him--not to crazy about music past 1989 LOL. I'm with Soul Sister, I like "This Woman's Work" too, very cool thing to do and different... |

Sorry I took a minute to get back to you all, I have Maxwell's recorded work and he takes some getting used to, but I've seen him live twice and he rocks, yeah he's got that Eddie Kendrick/Marvin Gaye ladies thing going on but he can "rock" and his band is tight. He gives you your moneys worth. Speaking of which last night I found a old (circa 2000) performance of Bobby Womack on Bet/Jazz(DVD) for about nine bucks and this man flat out jammed. Not only did he speak of Patty Labelle , but he recalled the influence that another Chicago artist had on his career (McKinley Mitchell)The Town I Live In.... I dont know if any of you have seen this performance but it was Bobby doing Bobby as only he can......in fact when the brother sat down on stage and took off his shoes halfway through the set.....I damed near jumped outta my chair. I was amazed that as he kept singing how much I was reminded of David Ruffin and his possible interpetation of some of Bobby's songs....(food for thought) but I digress Bobby was at his best and I highly recommend this DVD to you stalwart music lovers...he could teach some these youngsters a thing or two about a thing or two......
