The notes on my original Stylistics LPs say the vocal overdubs were done at another studio, and not Sigma Sound. Does that mean the group vocals weren't done at Sigma, and why was that? I can't think of the other studio....maybe Regent? What else was done at that studio? |

Garo, One the first Stylistics album, SOME of the vocals were recorded at Regent, which was actually the old Cameo/Parkway studios, and You're a big girl now was recorded entirely at Virtue studios for that was BEFORE Thom Bell's involvement . Back then Sigma had only one room, studio 1, and sometimes because of scheduling conflicts, other studios were used for certain overdubs. Also, as I stated sometime ago, the Stylistics NEVER sang background vocals on their records, except for Russell. Big Girl was all them and Im sure that you can hear the difference. Garo, Before Sigma opened in August, of '68 Gamble, Huff and Bell recorded all of their stuff at Regent/CP including: Lala means I love you Youve been untrue Western Union man Never gonna give you up Cowboys to girls Together Expressway to your heart At the top of the stairs |

Bobby, I remember you telling me about Regent Sound and how great the sound was and how someone got the bright idea that it would be better served as office space. Were there any other hits recorded there? |

Gamble & Huff recorded Jerry Butler's first Mercury single, "Lost" at Bell Sound in NYC. For the trivia buffs, Jerry's first single was also named "Lost", a different song, though. Written and produced by Calvin Carter and arranged by Riley Hampton and recorded at Universal Recording in Chicago in late '58 and released in early '59. It featured a flute solo, as did many records of the day. |

In addition to the aforementioned songs, there were a lot of songs, not necessarily hits of the Northern type, such as: You didnt say a word Prove yourself a lady House party and some later day Chubby Checker records. Now, the NYC Regent studios recorded a lot of the Gone /End stuff like Little Anthony, Chantels, Flamingos, etc. They were famous for their live echo chamber built by owner Bob Liftin. |

There was also a Regent Sound Studio in the Tottingham section of London. The Beatles recorded part of "Fixing A Hole" there. |

Mike, What I meant by "diferent joint" was that it wasnt a part of the U.S. Regent sound, and a seperate entity. Big daddy, Yes, and when you get to the part that goes " he was born in Virginia" I co a little guitar riff which follows that line. |

Hello to all, soulful friends! My copy of "Rockin' Roll Baby" (Avco, distributed by spanish "Discos Columbia") only says "Grabado en los estudios Sigma Sound North. Ingenieros: Joe Tarsia y Don Murray". Another Philly masterpiece! Since I heard for the first time "Could This Be The End", with these great dramatic falseto to today, I can't forget this song. Amigo Bobby, you're History for were involved in these historical masterpieces. Thanks for your contributions to the soundtrack of my life. Peace & Soul Food |

Bobby, You're so right about the difference in the sound of "You're A Big Girl Now" (Russell hates it) and the first three albums with Thom Bell. For years (30+) I listened to the Stylistics try to reproduce the background vocals on the wax. They never even came close. That's why Bell refused to use them in the studio. They just could not sing. Lucky for Russell, Bell used some very good studio artists to tighten the backgrounds around Russell's leads. It made all the difference. Bigdaddyg24k, What about Payback Is A Dog, Country Living, Children Of The Night, You're As Right As Rain, Ebony Eyes. They all have haunting melodies. Those (3) albums were the best. |

Hi Ms. Thompkins: Why were Airrion, Herb and the rest of the guys kept on for all those years since they weren't good studio singers? What kept them from being fired especially in those early years? |

Flo, Do you know the whereabouts of that unreleased Stylistics album that they recorded to follow up "Big Girl"? I played on it, and Daryl Hall played piano. Morris Baily produced it along with Bobby Douglass and Marty Bryant ( I think) I remember it being hastilly put together and when Avco passed on it(because of the bad bcg vocals, I suppose) thats when Thom came along, thank God and the rest is history. |

Nosey (nosey) I can answer that question ,HOWEVER I am sure that FLO wants a crack it at also.. I am very close to the source.. The answer to your question is very simple! LOYALTY! LOYALTY! LOYALTY! From what I understand, they tried many of times to get Russell to go and get REAL SINGERS.He told them that if they wanted him, then they have to take all..Believe me He knew they couldn't sing,he just stayed and help them because they all grew up together..From what I understand,He was the one that convince the producers to use Airrion on those leads.Of Course it took him forever to lay down the tracks.LOYALTY IS THE KEY HERE..and what did he get for it,THEY go behind his back and Audition another singer..I know that for a fact.. Question..Can you all hear the difference on the record'You're a Big Girl Now"..Well THAT Record was recorded with the ORIGINAL MEMBERS..Now listen to ALL OF THOSE HIT RECORDS! Wow !you tell me! I believe that is why Russell dislikes that song,He cannot listen to the Backgrounds...IT is so Funny that they travel around the world acting like they sung on the wax.. It is 4 of them and ONE ONLY SANG ON THE WAX(short leads)I might add!..Trust me I was at many Sessions with them! They cannot hit the Harmony! Question 2! Have you ever heard them sing acappella .AS many Radio and Tv shows they have done,Never or if once have they sung acapella..I REST MY CASE! TAKE OVER FLO!!! |

I'll sum it up in one album: ROUND TWO!!!! Simply one of the greatest LPs of all time & highly underrated. I mean, even though I was 12 or 13 when that LP came out, I love it. I mean, seriously, songs like: Children Of The Night, You're As Right As Rain & my favorite, Peek-A-Boo, were fully realized productions. The instrumentation, production (ala the french horns on the fade out of It's Too Late), the singing & musicianship was sheer perfection. That was one of the most beautiful LPs of the 70s. My family originally had the 8 track of it & I was pleased to the point of ecstasy to find the LP some 20 years later. That was a hard LP to come by in New York, especially at a reasonable price. I still love that LP & still put those slow jams on any mix CD or tape that I make. After 30 years, those songs still stand up! |

Hi FJT! I haven't talked with you in awhile. Both Bobby & yourself are correct about the first single on Sebring. Compared to the Thom Bell music on Avco, the difference is as clear as night & day. I loved You're A Big Girl Now. However, it kinda reminded me of the sound of Michael by The CODs. I mean, it was a catchy song & we loved it in spite of its crudeness, know what I'm saying? I mean, it sounded like something me & the fellas could have made...not slick, not polished....kinda raw & imperfect. That's how the vocals sound to me. To be honest, I would say that You're A Big Girl Now is one of their most unpopular hits. I can honestly state that no one has even asked me to put it on a tape for them. In more than 30 years, NO ONE has ever asked for that song!!! I still like the song, but compared to what came after it, it sounds kinda archaiac. It's too bad that so many of us fans were faked out for all of these years regarding the vocal situation. That's the thing that kinda sticks in my throat about all of this. I feel as though I've been had. I thought that I was a fan of THE STYLISTICS, when in reality, I was a fan of Russell & Bunny & Phil Hurrt & probably Juicefree20 in one of the sub mixes |

Nosey, PianoMan is absolutely correct. It was loyalty. Russell realized early on that if they wanted to exist as a 5-man group, then he would have to carry the vocals. He did not have a problem with that, seeing that they started together and he made sure they continued for 30+ years. He was not out for the fame and fortune for himself. He had offers to leave the group after their first album, but loyalty kept him there. I thought he should have left in 1973, because in the back of my mind, even then, I knew they were going to turn on him. I watched him give his all for 30+ years, to the point of losing his voice, only to watch them go behind his back and audition another lead singer. That's all water under the bridge now, as Russell Thompkins, Jr. & The New Stylistics are actually the ones carrying on the tradition. It's not those other two, who have dragged the name through the mud, by doing bad performance after bad performance, and putting several untrue rumors about Russell on the streets. It is forums like this that will let the truth be known. John C, I believe that Thom Bell wanted the dual lead on You Make Me Feel Brand New. Russell actually asked him to please use Airrion (they were close friends back then) for the song and he reluctantly used him. Try as he might, Thom Bell could not get him to stay on key and had to go with the song the way it was. Airrion has been singing that part out of key for 30+ years. It's a shame. Juicefree, You're right. I remember that song by the CODs. It was crudely done but was nevertheless a hit, just like Big Girl Now. As a matter of fact I like the CODs song better. |

Bobby, I had completely forgotten about that first, never released, bunch of trash (the background vocals). Russell said the backgrounds were so terrible that Avco said no way they were putting it out and then went and hired Thom Bell (thank God). He seems to think that either Amherst (who bought Avco's catalog) may have the master or Leon Mitchell who produced it. He's going to ask Chris Biehler who produced his solo CD and worked for Amherst for many years if they have it. He's also going to check with Leon. Will keep you posted. |

Bobby, I'll never forget Carl, the Sweeties, and Linda. They sang the backgrounds in perfect complement to Russell's leads. The backgrounds on those first (3) albums are so, amazingly, sweet it's unbelievable. The new group does an excellent job with reproducing those harmonies. They sound as close to the wax as it gets, without having a female voice. It's funny, when the group was forming Russell was intent on having a female voice in the background. At least (3) women tried out and they all had excellent voices, but none of them worked out due to events in their personal lives. |

FJT, Hello! Thanks for continuing to keep us updated on Russell's career (both past and present). I often wondered why the name of the group wasn't changed to "The Stylistics featuring Russell Thompkins, Jr." but now I understand after reading your comments. Having witnessed their concerts for the past 30 years, I always felt that it was a nice gesture on Russell's part to let the other members become involved in the shows (e.g. introducing the names of the songs and talking to the audience). He seemed content to just sing the songs and remain in the background- a noble gesture on his part. Bobby, Thanks for the insight concerning Carl Helm- I remember listening to him (as a DJ) on WDAS during my college years. He sang a duet with Eloise Laws (remake of "You Are Everything") which can be found on her 1980 album on Liberty Records- very smooth vocal delivery. |

Bobby, Robert Douglas is still in Philly. He doesn't play the guitar much anymore. Marty Bryant is in California and I don't think he's in the music business at all anymore. Richard Jones came to see us last summer. I think he does a lot of AC gigs now. A woman's voice in the background would be nice. It's always on Russell's mind. Even though he has the three guys, I know he would add the extra voice if he could find the right person. |

FJT and Pianoman, It was great hearing you talk about Russell's loyalty, humbleness, and love of singing. The fact that there was never a "Russell and" or "featuring" speaks volumes about his character. I'm sure nearly everyone who posts here has stories to tell of ordinary people, bitten by the "star" bug who became monsters overnight or of groups torn apart by jealousy and backbiting. It restores one's faith in mankind to hear stories about people like Russell, Jimmy Scott, Bobby E, Spyder Turner, (gonna stop before I commit the sin of omission). People who weren't so much unchanged by the biz, but who became even more giving as they became successful. It helps to balance a lot of the other....er stuff. |

Destruction, Speaking of unchanged by the biz. The real stars (not those new bullshit "artists")are usually low key and down to earth, and have nothing to prove and are "anti bling" of the first order.. hanging out last night with H&O, Michael Mc Donald and AWB solidified that theory for me. |

Mike, Regent was the former Cameo/Parkway studio A at 309 S. Broad street. The room was rather large and very "New York" in its aesthetics. The control room was rather small with two four track machines and several two track and mono decks. They had a live chamber as well as tape delay and some spring reverb and some kind of crude echo plate. Not much else except the usual eq's and compressors. That particular studio ran between late 1963 until around 1972. Joe tarsia left in 1968 to open Sigma. Cameo Parkway/regent was very conducive to the future Northern Soul records which were recorded there because of Joe's expertise in achieving a close aproximation of the Motown sound. There was also a studio "b" which later ceacme Sigma studio 4 and is now G&H studios. So in essence, Regent/CP's sound was a bit "cruder" relative to the more slick sound of Sigma which, in part was attributed to the newer type equipment, the sound of the room and the patented live chamber which was a holdover from the Reco-Art days. As an addendum to this post I would like to add, that insofar as "crudeness" in 60's-70's Philly recording studios was concerned, I would have to say that: Impact was #1 919/Jamie Guyden#2 Virtue #3 Sound Plus #4 CP/Regent#5 Sigma#6 |

We had hits from everywhere, not just Philly. But in Philly most of the bigger hits were recorded at Sigma, from 1968- 1984, and then for a minute in 1988-1989. |

HI I am new to the site. I was wondering if Russell is putting any remakes on his album? I am sure that Russell is headlining the show in Baltimore, but do you know at this time who else is performing on October 9? Looking forward to the Concert in October in Baltimore. |
