I have heard of artists talking of doing benefits when times were bad for them. Does an artist benefit financially in any way from doing a benefit?

During my playing days I did several benifits. I was never payed, nor was I expected to be. Generally these particular shows would include many artists I knew and some I would get to know. It was great getting together with these people to do something worthwhile. We always had a great time.

Usually if the Artist is a big name they can afford to and do forgo their fee to donate it to the benefit. Sometimes especially with Artists who are not as financially stable, they will get a small fee and forgo their normal performance fee.

Ralph is right, these events are great fun had by all and a chance to meet people who may benefit your career someway in the future.

Sometimes volunteering to do a benefit gets an artist back in the public eye and can reaffirm that the artist still has "it"...which can lead to (sometimes VERY lucrative) paying gigs.

I've always enjoyed playing charity benifits. It's a pain hauling your band equiptment in and seting up,but the people that are puting on the gigs are so happy that your there that they can't do enough for you. Also you feel good helping out at a good cause. Also as Ralph said, you get to hang with other entertainers and get together and trade funny stories about life on the road.

All and all you usually have a great time, with no pressure.
