Let's talk about the best thing about making music, getting tha' money! What types of goodies did you see artists, writers, producers, management, etc. acquire after their big hits (or what did you get after yours)? (Message edited by Cool_Ju on July 12, 2004) |

In the 60's I saw them mainly buy New Cadillacs, Floreseim (forgot the sp.) Allegator Shoes, Colorful Suits, & Flashy Big Jewelry, fake or real. The real wealthy ones such as producers or James Brown bought nice homes in an elite neighborhood. S.S. |

The smartest people do not flaunt their wealth in the way that most of todays "artists" do. Today, its temporary thing.. a flash in the pan. A lot of the "wealth" portrayed, is perceived wealth not received wealth, and all that glitters is not gold(or platinum) me personaly... been there, done that. I would put my money to good use and hire the best accountants to have my money work for me. All of that spend, spend, spend mentality of the here and now, is STUPID and ignorant and most of todays performers will be sorry they lived that way and will be "back in the hood" in a heartbeat, trust me! |

Were talking about yesterday's folks primarily! For instance, though not a recording artist, I think Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) said when he achieved initial success he bought a pink Cadillac like Sugar Ray Robinson had then. I was thinking of respones along this line. We all know money needs to be saved. But you should enjoy it some of it, too! Hey this thread I started to be a fun one! |

I believe it was a "pimped out" Caddy. Back in the day, although frivelous a lot of performers would do things like buy their mqmq a house. Today its "me first", for the most part. Of course, the "cheddar" was much shorter, and the record companies shadier, and therefore with some exceptions, the performers have little to show for it today. I myself, had a wonderful home built. never was into "the bling" because I had more sense than to do that. Bought several nice "sensible" cars that were built to last. Loved to travel and enjoy life and treated my wife and family great and with respect. Sadly, my wife passed away, but I did sell my home for a handsome prophet. |

I've been happy with it, and I've been happy without it. Through the years I've learned that it all depends on your personallity and your out look on life in general. With some people it doesn"t matter how much of it they have they can't be happy, it's just their personality. Money is a tool to be used, not a god to be worshipped.......anyway, that's the way I look at it. |

P.S. the more tools one has, the more one can fix or build. |

FOUR HUNDRED MILLION....nuff said. CoolJu, One of my oldest memories is of Frenchy Fuqua (Steelers) returning to the hood. We were all disappointed that he wasn't wearing the infamous platform shoes with the fish in them. |

I know a cat who had some hits in the 70's and could've been set but instead owes the IRS a few hundred grand. Guess it's all in how you play it. (Message edited by Cool_Ju on July 16, 2004) (Message edited by Cool_Ju on July 16, 2004) |

Nobody at Motown in Detroit had a Rolls Royce. David's Cadillac wasn't even particularly impressive compared to anybody else's. I found the way David was portrayed in that film very offensive. He could be a bit high-strung but this wasn't the same man I recorded dozens of times. James Brown quietly contributed generous sums of money to local community charities everywhere he played. Now THAT was real wealth! (Message edited by Bob Olhsson on July 18, 2004) |

Most of these a**holes with the over the top cars and jewelry and the like, do not imo represent wealth. It represents ignorance and a very temporary quick fix and last go round before returning to what they came from..more ignorance and stupidity. T Burger King or penetentiary await. |

All I asked was what nice things did you see singers and others acquire when they first found success. The question is really about folks back in the day. Question was not about wealth, just "What kind of car did David Ruffin get after "My Girl? What did you see the Supremes buy after their string of #1's?" etc. I know a Philly cat who had some hits in the 70's and could've been set but instead owes the IRS a few hundred grand. Guess it's all in how you play it. |
