Isabel Sanford of'The Jeffersons' Dies

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Isabel Sanford, best known as "Weezie" or Louise Jefferson on the sitcom "The Jeffersons," has died of natural causes, her publicist said Monday. She was 86.

Sanford had been hospitalized since July 4 and died Friday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with her daughter Pamela Ruff at her side, longtime friend, publicist and manager Brad Lemack said.

Her health waned after she underwent preventive surgery on a neck artery 10 months ago, Lemack said. He did not release a specific cause of death.

Sanford made her feature film debut in the classic "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," before co-starring with Sherman Hemsley for more than 10 years in CBS's "The Jeffersons," a spin-off of the popular series "All in the Family," in which she also appeared.

In 1981, Sanford became the first black woman to receive an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

She had recently appeared on "The Simpsons" and in commercial campaigns for Denny's restaurants and retailer Old Navy.

In addition to her daughter, Sanford is survived by two sons, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private but a public memorial service is planned, Lemack said.

ANOTHER LEGEND HAS PASSED AWAY! What is going on in 2004? First Marlon Brando, then Syreeta, now "Weezie" is gone too! All in a week-and-a-half! Well, George is one of the last ones left among us (Weezie, Helen Willis (Roxie Roker-Lenny Kravitz's mom) and Mother Jefferson are the three gone). The Jefferson will NEVER be the same again.

Whoa...this is really a shock to me. I always enjoyed her television work; she and Sherman Hemsley were just so believable and so funny as George and Weezie. R.I.P. Ms. Sanford.

I dug the way she spoke her mind to the thugs in the church scene in Original Gangster. Three stars
has passed to the big tv/movie sceen in the sky;
Ron O'Neal, Paul Winfield now Isabelle Stanford.
We all need believe it or not need to visit, call and talk with our family and the generation that has come before us. Rather it be the sick and the shut in, I DO.

I am sorry to hear this :-(

When the cast was travelling with "The Jeffersons" stage show in the mid-1990s, it was exciting seeing the main cast perform scenes from the sitcom in person at the Fox Theater in Detroit. Among the actors from the show who are now gone, including Isabel Sanford and Roxy Roker, it was either the British(?) neighbor, Bentley, or Ralph the Doorman who had passed away before this tour. (I forget which one.)

Does anybody remember which one?

Wow, again I come home to learn that another talent has passed. RIP Isabel Sanford. The Jeffersons lasted 10yrs on television and thanks to video(dvd) you can still watch seasons 1 & 2.
I have been meaning to get them, but I guess I really will have to, because I miss that show!:-):-)
Especially the verbalizing between Weezie & mother Jefferson, too funny!!!

Last night TVLand did a episode of marathon dedicated to Ms. Isabelle Stanford. TVLand did a fine job of airing certain episodes. Because they all we're my favorites.
