Today, I hung out for several hours with a couple of hip Scots, Soulful Detroit's own David Meikle and his pal, Harry Dhesi. We began our excursion at 47th & King Drive, site of the old Regal Theater, which is now a parking lot. On the corner is the new Harold Washington Cultural Center. We then preceded north to 43rd Street to see the former home of the Checkerboard Lounge, but to my surprise, the building has been demolished. It's supposed to move into it's new Hyde Park home sometime in the future. Next, we drove down King Drive, turned off at 22nd Street and hung a right at Michigan Avenue to stop in at the Chess Studios Museum. The place is closed on Sundays, so David and Harry decided they'll revisit it tomorrow. We went north down South Michigan Avenue to visit the sites of the One-Derful/Marvelous, Constellation and Vee-Jay/Brunswick offices and studios. Of course, these places are long gone, but the Vee-Jay/Brunswick building is the only one of these establishments still physically standing. Next, we went to 630 N. McClurg Court, home of WBBM-TV, Chicago's CBS TV & radio affiliate and formerly home to Okeh Records and Chicago's Columbia Recording Studios. You cannot enter the building without proper documentation. You remember 9/11. Next, we stopped at the former location of Universal Recording at 46 E. Walton. Universal went out of business in the early '90s, but these guys came all the way from Scotland and it was their first time in Chicago and they at least wanted to see the locations. We made a few other little stops before trekking south to Hyde Park and stopping in at the Falcon Inn for a bite and a brew. David and Harry then dropped me off at home and they were on their way back to the motel. They'll visit some more spots tomorrow before heading back to Glasgow on Tuesday. It was a real pleasure, guys. Great to meet you and I'm sure our paths will cross again in the future.

Hi Mike.
I gave David Billy Butler's info so I sure do hope he gets to talk to him while he's in Chi-Town.
Wish I could have been there.

They took a lot of photos, no video. It might not be too exciting watching a video of a building standing still. LOL.

It sounds like you guys had a good outing. I hope the guys enjoyed their first visit to Chicago.

P.S. - I've never been able to get into the Chess studios either (3 attempts).

Steve, you have to call for an appointment. I don't know the number offhand, but you have to let them know you are coming. Don't know why that is, but that's how it is. They are closed Sundays.

Hey David:

Is is pints? a blends or straight???

America does not have a true grasp on what a beer or ale or stout should be. But, there are a few who are giving it a good try. So I want to make sure I bring the right thing on Tuesday.

And if it falls to the spirit's side then I will go to the well to get that!!!!!!!!! :-)

Hello All:

The film will be tomorrow on the local Detroit Fox show.

It is 12:42 I just got back home and all I can say was it was mind blowing!!!!!!!!!

Music, local Detroit Stars from the day singing along to the 45's and a goodtime was had by all!!

Will post photo's tomorrow (Friday) took a ton and there was at least 6 cameras at this event besides the Fox camera.

I know I took at least 50 plus shot's!!

Besides the regulars Joe Moorehouse, Gary, Sideburn Slim, Dana, Leo and my self. We had David M., Harry D. Leo our travelers from Scotland and a few local Detroit artist's and producers. The Lovely Francis Nero, Spyder Turner, Dennis Coffee and Millie Felch. Plus Clay Mc Murray, Jeanna Sorenson, Gee, and Jasmine. And of course brother Ralph T via phone from Hollywood. Who was serenaded by Spyder Turner over the phone!!

Heck it was such a goodtime that the Bar even turned down it's music while we were spinning the 300 or so Soulful disc's that where brought to the event.

Harry & David learned that not all of the Soul tunes have been found or taken from Detroit!!!!

Tony Birchett - "Don't put out the fire" on LBJ What Now Records or Berne Moore "Which way to turn" on Lark

Just a few of the Detroit Sounds that got played. More to be posted!!!

Once again thanks to all that showed and hope to see you at the next one.

Remember the Darrell Banks Memoria; Service is Saturday @ 1pm.

In the words of the Mighty, Mighty Dells: "Oh What A Night"!!!

The SDF get-together last night was great. It was a real pleasure to meet David, Lowell, Harry, Gee, Leo, Spyder Turner, Frances Nero, Clay McMurray and to see some of my locals friends again like Millie, Soulaholic, Dennis Coffey, Sideburn Slim, Dana, and Joe M.

We really had a ball.

I never liked spam anyway... way too much fat and carbs and all filler!

Speaking of Spam.. the studio Village Recorders in west L.A. was originally owned and built by Geordie Hormel of Hormel Foods and they once referred to the place as "The House That Spam Built"!!

OMG Eli. That's so odd. Where I live at in Peoria, IL there's a recording studio downtown that everyone goes to that was originally some sort of Hormel Foods office! The old faded Hormel artwork is still on the side of the building. It's a small world. :-)
