Bass is usually a background singer position but some were just so good at it that we remember them in the forefront. Who are your favorites?

My Top 5 are...
#5. Chuck Barksdale (Dells)
#4. Blue Lovett (Manhattans)
#3. I don't know his name but he sings bass for the gospel group The Fairfield Four
#2. I don't know his name but he has the deepest bass I have ever heard on Swing Low by the Gospel Hummingbirds
#1. Melvin Franklin (Temptations)

Hi kev-lo;
Just coolin' out in the pool, I love the water :-), the summer's been great here this year, nice breeze off the lake, and the livivin' is easy, when I've had time to relax, LOL!!
Hope your having a great summer too!!
You make me jealous talkin' bout the rare & lost soul grouops cause all my CD's of them are buried in big storage boxes, it will be a long time till I get around to unpacking them again since we're trying to move. Sigh...maybe we'll see you when we're in N.Y. Take it easy.

Hi Nikki;
Thanks for all the info on the Dominoes' bass singers. The one I was thinking of sings Over The Rainbow and Old Man River, one of the albums Jackie Wilson is on tearing up Three Coins In A Fountain, Little Things Mean Alot, etc..Course my albums & CD's are in storage so I can't be 100% accurate in my recall, lol. But I love the Dominoes style & interpetation on their renditions.
S.S.

Destruction and Satipe,

I once had the pleasure of singing doo-wop songs with Jimmy on the corner of 50th and Broadway, where a lot of old musicians still hang out to reminisce about Tin Pan Alley...or, as some of them call it "Sh*t Pan Alley" .... ;)

Satipe:
Do you mean the Gospel Hummingbirds from Oakland? I have a couple of mid-70s 45s by them. If it's that group, I think that James Gibson is/was their basser.

The bass singer with the Fairfields is Isaac "Dickie" Freeman.

Other fine bass singers in the gospel field are:
Willie Bobo (Heavenly GS/Dixie Humming Birds)
Earl Malone (Spirit Of Memphis)
Jimmy Jones (Southern Sons/Harmonizing Four)
Orlandus Wilson (Golden Gate Qt)

Hi again, soulful brothers and sisters!

Thanks for your correction and your info, Handsome and Gary.
Hi, Zebop, if we talks about falsetto...!!
"Your Love Is Deep Inside Of Me" is a great falsetto song by The Futures. About his name I only knows John King sing lead and Harry bass. The other two members are James King and Kenny Crew.

Hello again, soulful family!

And who sang bass voice in The Impression's "Lover's Lane"? Perhaps, was Jerry Butler?
Somebody knows?
I have this song in a Top-Line / Charly records (UK) LP compilation jointly with many others Impression's 60's gems ("Seorita, I Love You", "At The County Fair") but in the linner notes don't says who sang bass. I only recognize some Jerry Butler lead and Curtis Mayfield leads.

Another sixtie's great bass-voice fave of mine is in The Blue Note's "Pucked In Your Lips" and, both, falsetto and bass voices in "Blue Star".

Another, IMHO, brief but historical bass voice is the male vocal intro in Patti Drew's "Tell Him" ("Pam-Pam-Pa-da-ba"). The good if brief, double good!

The bass singer for The Dominoes on that song was the late Bill Brown. I also liked Bobby Nunn of The Robins and the original Coasters. You should hear his duet with Little Esther Phillips on "Saturday Night Daddy" produced by Leiber & Stoller from 1952.

Nikki and Eli,

On our way back from Artscape last night I was playing a tape for the crew of older R n B groups(Orioles, Jive Bombers, Swallows, etc.) one of the songs was "My Baby's Gone" by the Ravens' Jimmy Ricks....so I figured I'd add his name to the Bass Singers group. Alas, u guys already did. But I'm adding it anyway...along with this story.

After the song went off, I told my 5-year old grand, the bass singer in our van group, that she would have to learn that whole song and sing it with her bass voice. After about a 5 second pause, the Duchess replies that that might be too hard and ask if she can sing it in baritone. My wife does one of those Linda Blair turnarounds and asked her how she knows about a baritone. The Duchess replied that while at Artscape we (she, her sister and myself) saw a short performance for kids by the Opera company where they explained the difference between soprano and baritone. She told her that baritone was not as low as a bass voice but it was still low.

The kids are Alright.

At least I think it was him.

Of course Melvin Franklin is the greatest!!

Hey, Gil!

Pardon-me if i'm wrong. I don't knows if William Powell (RIP) sang also bass or not, but I believe he sang falsetto and bass voice in the O'jays was only by Walter Williams. In fact, William had a extraordinary falsetto that can be heard in "Working In Your Case" or "Peace" among others. In the "Vocal Introduction" track in "Live In London" album, also can heard his falsetto virtuosity.

I knows a very very very good bass voice in a group (not exactly a "vocal group") called Peddlers. The only song I got and I have heard by this group is the standard "On A Clear Day (You Can See Forever)". It's worth to heard, friends!!

When you talk about great bass singers I'll drop 2 names for that. How about Pervis Jackson from the Spinners and Craedel "Red" Jones from the Chi-Lites?
I'd like to throw a "trivial question out there, did Blue Magic and Tavares have bass singers even though both groups were quintets?

I have this track called "You're The Boss" by LaVern Baker and Jimmy Ricks from 1961. Are any of you familiar with it? Leiber & Stoller wrote and produced it, I think it was a mild hit. Elvis and Ann-Margret covered it on the "Viva Las Vegas" soundtrack.

Hey, Rick!

You're so right about Spinner's bass voice.
When I plays "Now That We're Together" (B side of "Rubberband Man"), I'm impressioned with the ultra-bass voice in the intro. Sadly, despite the fact I got some other singles and four albums by The Spinners, the bass voice of Pervis Jackson is not frequent in another songs. I only believe that "Games People Plays" features also his bass register.

Peace!

Hi "Eli"
What group did he sing with? Was it one of the groups from Philly? Like The Sons of Robin Stone?

Does anyone remember B.J Jones? He sang with Doc Green's Drifters, as well as with Rick Shephard's (sic) Drifters... currently he sings with The Dubs...he's got a great bass voice, and has a great knowledge of doo wop, and lots of its cast of characters.
