hello there im new to the forum and i was after some information about the buddah label. I was wondering, does anybody on here now anything about who the buddah musicians were and where the stuff was rechorded. there is quite a bit of info about the motown studio and musicians but buddah seems to be a bit more illusive. i would like to now for instance who played bass on the superfly album by curtis mayfield or any other curtis albums. and who played on the gladys knight hits , where peaceful waters flow and pipe dreams. thank you, im new on here |

Buddah Records was based in New York, and pick up, leased, distributed product from all over USA. The session musicians recorded material pressed on the label in NYC, NJ, Chicago, The South, Los Angeles, and many other places. The session players were different for Robert Bateman and lou Courtney's NY productions from the NY productions of Van McCoy, and other NY producers whose recordings ended up pressed by Buddah. I'd be curious to find out that Buddah had a "House Band"! |

Folks: As Robb indicated, Buddah Records was founded in 1967 by a group of partners led by Arthur Kass, who was an accountant for MGM Records. These same partners (including Artie Ripp) were the brains behind Kama Sutra Records/Productions, which was launched in 1965 and distributed by MGM (where they met Kass). Kass then hired Neil Bogart (who was the VP of Cameo/Parkway, which was also distributed by MGM) to be Buddah's president. Neil in turn hired Cecil Holmes to be the label's VP of R&B music. Buddah didn't have a "house band". If anything they were more like "the house of trends". Bubblegum (Kasenetz/Kass), Gospel (Edwin Hawkins, Melanie's "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)"), Soul (Curtom, T-Neck & Sussex were all distributed by Buddah whereas Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Midnight Train To Georgia" would have to be the label's most successful single) and mellow rock ("One Toke Over The Line") all brought in the dough for the label thanks in part to Neil Bogart's relentless style of record promotion. Hey Stranger, good to see you back and posting! There are just too many good sides on Buddah, no matter what genre of music you're into. Some great soul sides: Modulations--"I Can't Fight Your Love" Mel Williams--"Sweet Little Girl of Mine" Carl Douglas--"Marble and Iron" Margie Evans--"Waterfalls" and those are just the tip of the iceberg! Best, Mark |

Hello again, Pazant Brothers & Pointer Sisters! I likes a lot a song called "Just When I Needed You Most" by Randy Vanwarmer, on Buddah and never knows nothing more about this artist. In fact i heard this song in the first 70's many times in the radio and at the present i got it in a Cd compilation by UK Marble (all the selections are from Buddah except some few by Sugarhill). I never see a pick by this artist. A very mellow ballad. Peace & Soul Food |

I remember that song Manny. It was on Bearsville/Warner in the states. Vanwarmer went on to write big hits for the Oak Ridge Boys, Alabama, to name a few. Sadly he passed away about six months ago. |

Hello again, Zebop and all! Hi, Kev-Go, I'm glad you are here again, amigo! I never forget that one time you salute Carl Davis and The Chi-lites in the name of a spanish fan! Some other Buddah greats recordings I got (or have heard) are Norman Connors, Phyllis Hyman, Michael Henderson (solo and featuring Jean Carn in the fantastic "Valentine Love"), Melba Moore, Andrea True Connection, Trammps,... Also, in Spain appeared one albums serie entitled "Invasin Buddah", with a OVNI in the sleeve and the names of the artists. I'm not sure if in some of these albums appears Little Anthony. I never acquired a Lp of this serie because everytime i find in second hand stores in very bad estate. Peace & Soul Food |

Hi Mike! Thanks for your good wishes. I hope also you have a good summer without excessive hot temperatures. Here is terriffic and I only can supporting it when some sunday descend canyons in the glacial waters WITHOUT ISOTHERMIC PROTECTION! In another trhead (I believe is in "Your Fave Classical Arrangements In A Soul Song") i mentioned the T. Bell - Teddy Randazzo produced Little Anthony's LP ("On A New Street"). I don't got it but have the intuition that should be very classically arranged. About the "Invasin Buddah" artists, probably you have reason. This was in the 70's and don't well remember. Best regards and keeping very cool, amigo Mike. |

Hello Everyone. Maxwell .. what country are you in? I see that you have mentioned CURTIS MAYFIELD as a Buddah artist. Where I live ( England ), his early '70s material was released on the U.K. Buddah label ( "Move on Up", "Freddies Dead", Superfly", "We Gotta Have Peace" etc. ), however in the U.S. it was on his own Curtom label. Could it be that you are another Brit joining our merry throng? Anyway, a few other soulful early '70s Buddah artists worthy of mention ( and on Buddah in the U.S. as well as the rest of the known world ) that I can think of are ... BARBARA MASON .. especially "Give Me Your Love" ( a fantastic CURTIS MAYFIELD production ), and "Bed and Board" ( A wonderfully under-stated world-weary philly ballad ). THE TRAMMPS .. "Zingg"/"Penguin at the Big Apple", "Hold Back the Night"/"Scrub Board", "Sixty Minute Man" .. before they moved to P.I.R/Golden-Fleece and Atlantic. THE MODULATIONS .. "I Can't Quit Your Love" ( nice VINCE MONTANA produced philly/dance track ). Roger |

Mel, I have a listing for the one sided disc by The Inspirations (L. A. group) as BREAKTHROUGH 1001. But I don't have any numbers for the 1970's remix with a part 2 by this particular group. But in my files that I put together years ago on Baby Huey I also had BREAKTHROUGH 1001 as "Just Being Careful" it's just that I got the info from one of the old mailing lists and was wondering if it is a boot or not (probably is!). I'm also looking for the title to the flip of the Claude Huey release on EARLY BIRD 49654 "Feel Good All Over" Got any info on that one? |

Folks: First of all, thanks for the info regarding the late Randy Vanwarmer. "You Left Me (Just When I Needed You Most)" continues to be a staple on "lite rock" radio stations across the country. To update regarding Buddah having a house band, one could say that the label did have a "house band" per say when Norman Connors came on board in the mid 1970s. He was the label's in-house music director and was responsible for the early hits by Phyllis Hyman and Michael Henderson among others. Kevin Goins - KevGo |

Barbara did two versions of Bed and Board on consecutive albums - Give Me Your Love and Lady Love. The original was only 3.30 while the later version was over 8 minutes. Label says it was written by Flax and Lambert (Dennis?)and published by Buddah's inhouse Kama Sutra publishing company. No production credits on either album! |

Manny - you mentioned On A New Street a while back, the Little Anthony album on Avco. This was one of the treats I discovered by chance when on holiday in New Orleans some years back. I'd never heard about the album but seeing that Thom B and Teddy R had produced it was enough for me. Sadly the album is pressed slightly off kilter but that doesn't stop enjoyment. Some lovely stuff on there and although the Bell tracks were mainly pulled off for singles, Teddy's Easier Said than Done is my favourite. A classy album with some wonderful arrangements. |

Hello Submarine! Hi, Mike Thanks for your instructive comments. In fact I only knows this album because i got a book ("Gua esencial del Soul", by spanish Patricia Godes) where appears the sleeve in black & white and she says who is the producers. I thinks in a possible blend of "Hurt So Bad" and "Life Is A song Worth Singing" and I believe this can be the paradigma of the symphonic soul. Peace & Soul Food |
