The State Recording Company in Ferndale MI issued a handful of records in the mid-1950s. I believe that they changed the name from State to SRC after 3 issues (probably after complaints from the Chicago label States). Can anyone fill in any missing information or gaps?

State Recording 101 The Dee-Jays: Love Me Baby/Please Don't Leave Me Here To Cry
State Recording 102 ?
State Recording 103 Bro Leroy Johnson: Jesus Prayed/Dear Mother ("DM" is excellent gospel with female vocal group backing)
Bro Leroy Johnson/State 103 A
Bro Leroy Johnson/State 103 B
SRC 104 Harvey Hill Jr: Boogie Woogie Woman/She Fool Me (highly prized downhome blues with harmonica)
Harvey Hill Jr/SRC 104 A
Harvey Hill Jr/SRC 104 B

SRC 105 ?
SRC 106 The Five Emeralds: I'll Beg/Let Me Take You Out Tonight
SRC 107 The Five Emeralds: Pleasure Me/Darling

the guy who ran the label operated it out of his grocery store, can't remember his name but about 20 years ago a Detroit record collector Bill Sowders looked up S.R.C.'s old address from the 50's and went over there and the guy was still operating the store.

Bill managed to get a few records and even the metal stamper plates for some of the records, I don't know what he did with that stuff.

All I have is the second Five Emeralds 78("Darling"/"Pleasure Me"). How do the others rate?

Ron: thanks for the input - do you have a contact details for Bill Sowders?

Brian: one side of the Leroy Johnson is solo vocal and piano -pretty good, but the other side is much better, IMO. He's joined by a fine tough female group and they really lift this side. It's rare, and not listed in the standard postwar gospel discography (or anywhere else, to my knowledge).

Harvey Hill's "She Fool Me" (a Washboard Sam song) is generally regarded as a minor postwar blues classic. Excellent, witty lyrics. The flip is disappointing by comparison, which explains why it's not been reissued, as far as I know. I think Hill was from Saginaw MI, and this was his only single - and a rare one, too. He was recorded one or two tracks in the '60s for Victoria Spivey's label but disappeared after that.

I don't know the vocal group records but I think that the Five Emeralds records were booted in the '70s and should be not too hard to track down.

Bill Sowders was an early buyer and seller back in the late 70's to around 1990 and then moved to West Virgina, I don't know if anyone in Detroit kept in contact with him.

as I said the guy who had SRC ran the the label from his store and had no studio himself.

sorry I don't remember more about this

BJL,
Thanks so much. I'm going to look for the Leroy Johnson and Harvey Hill songs. Have they been re-ished on cd?
