Which came out first? One sounds like an imitation of the other to me. Was The Corporation copying HDH or was HDH copying The Corporation? |

"I Want You Back" came out in 1970, and "Want Ads" came out in 1971. I think that "Stick Up" and "Want Ads" are imitations of each other. |

So then HDH was trying to get that Jackson 5 sound? |

Cool Ju...I think it was just the opposite. If anybody was copying anybody else, The Corporation was trying to copy/imitate HDH. The Invictus/Hot Wax HDH sound was simply an extension of the Motown HDH sound that they had created years earlier. So, since their sound came first, HDH were the ones being imitated. |

Gary, HIT! You're right on the money! Back in the day (I speak of a very long day), I knew the trio and they were KINGS OF THE WORLD! Motown or Invictus/Hot Wax, it made no difference. It was only a name to work under. But all you had to say was HDH and everyone knew who you were talking about. It was THEIR sound. They owned it. Everything else was copy-cat, IMHO. A- PS: I recall the first time I went to visit HDH new company. They were all so proud of their offices, beautifully decorated, in downtown Detroit and it was an honor to visit them. I had been wondering whether the J5 had hit first with "I Want You Back," "The Love You Save," etc, and HDH copied that sound, or whether HDH came out with "Want Ads" and "Stick Up," and The Corporation copied their sound. |

I think the point is moot. "Stick-Up" was written by Greg Perry and General Johnson under the house that HDH built (Invictus/Hot Wax). BTW, "Stick-Up" was written with the group Glass House in mind. J5's first hit was ABC (I think). I stand to be corrected. A- |

I was just wondering if HDH heard the J5 and said, "Wow, were gonna fight fire (that new Motown sound) with fire and copy their sound, or if BG said, "This is the current HDH sound so we are gonna have their sound even though they are not with us." |

"I Want You Back" came out in 1969....that is why they say that Michael Jackson can make the claim that he had a hit in the 60's, 70's, 80's etc. I read that "Wants Ads" was gonna be called "Stick Up" at one point and it was also recorded on Freda Payne and Scherrie Paybe (for Glass House). Let me throw this in....UK mag 'Blues and Soul' reported that HDH signed Brotherly Love a young group of guys all named Jackson!!! And they brought out songs like Bingo/Growing Pains which were more J5 than the J5!! By the way, Rodman, there's another Edna Wright Cd on ebay up for grabs....at this rate your commission charges are gonna allow you to seek an early retirement!! lol |

Sean, You can start a topic for Ray or Dennis. I'm sure they would be able to answer your question about "Want Ads". -Steve |

I Want You Back was released Oct 7 1969. Want Ads was released in March of 1971. What might account for their simular sound is that (I think) both were recorded in Los Angeles and might have used some of the same musicians. Anybody have any additional background on that? (that's your que Wonder B) |

That's a good long time between songs. I'm certainly sure it's not a case of "One Bad Want Ads" but "I Want You Back" and "Want Ads" do bare more than a passing resemblance. Really I thought HDH's later Motown and early post Motown work was more dark and inventive. I certainly can hear the HDH sound and style progression in "Give Me Just A Little More Time" and "Band of Gold" but frankly when I hear "Want Ads" I don't.
