I tried to add this post to a previous "Basic Motown Collection" thread, but it's been disabled. Steve mentioned a 9-CD set from Stax Records, but it was a bit more than I could handle--besides it was just one volume of a 3-volume set--so I found "The Stax Story," a 4-CD set of the biggest hit singles. It's a hair under $70.00 in case anyone else is interested ... and the accompanying booklet was nominated for some type of award that recognizes accompanying material. So, thanks again Steve and Livonia Ken for your comments. In a thread on Lorraine Ellison, Roger mentioned "The Best of Loma," and I did want to add some more Southern Soul to the Stax purchase, so I added that one. Thanks, Roger. For anyone else who either lost their 45's (my case) or never had all that great music, you can have access to all the suggestions made to me by searching "basic motown collection." If there are any more suggestions, I've gone as far as Social Security, etc. will allow me, but others might be interested. Bob F. (Message edited by notsocool66 on July 03, 2004) |

Hi Bob, If you love that Stax music, the first two volumes are essential. There is so much good music there that I'd never even heard of. I bought them when they first came out & they were nothing short of a revelation. I have the 3rd Volume also, but never really took the time to check it out thoroughly. All three have excellent liner notes!!! I understand the Social Secutiry situation. I've got to find a way to get you a copy of those volumes. Maybe as a Christmas present or something. So many of those non-hits were as good as the hits. I was a kid in the 60s & 70s, so, so can only imagine what happened to my 45s. Between putting dimes on the tonearm & covers constantly tearing, my childhood songs didn't fare very well. I also learned a valuable lesson.....NEVER put your records ON or NEAR a radiator!!! I'll say no more, the memory is too painful! "Tito....get the tissue." (Message edited by juicefree20 on July 03, 2004) (Message edited by juicefree20 on July 03, 2004) |
