One music book I have says that Ms Ellsion's performance of Stay With Me is best ever performance on a record(is this the same song as Janis Joplin's?! I vaguely remember it. Her satus/history seems somewhat vague and mysterious. I know she is deceased. Anyone know info? |

Now we are talking 'awesome' here.. the story goes that Frank Sinatra had booked a studio..but could not make it.. so Lorraine was given the time.. with a full orchestra waiting for Frankie Boy. 'Stay With Me Baby' propably scared them.. the performance is just spine -tingling. Whatever song she got hold of.. she just tore it apart. Try 'Heart Be Still' which is another cracker. I have been playing tracks from her 1974 Album called 'Lorraine Ellison' on recent shows..Jimmy Cliff's 'Many Rivers To Cross' will leave you breathless.. and on Sunday 's show(will be online on Monday).. you'll get the chance to hear her sing a gospel favourite 'Walk Around Heaven' Lorraine passed away on 17th August 1985..she'll be screaming the house down in heaven by now! According to Jerry Ragovoy, who produced the "Stay With Me" session, he was given 24 hours notice of the availability of the studio and the 48 piece orchestra, and he spent all that time writing out the individual arrangements. Because of that, it was the only song recorded at the session. "Heart Be Still" is based on the gospel song "Peace Be Still." There's clips of a version of that song by Rev. C. L. Franklin available on a number of websites and you can see how much Ragovoy and Bert Berns borrowed. Berns was worried that the two songs were so close that there would be a public backlash when "Heart" was released as a single. He was right, as a number of radio stations pulled the song from their playlists after protests from church groups. |

The "Stay With Me" album was originally released on Warner Bros. Records in 1969 and reissued onto CD on the German Linea label in 1991. |

Anyone know much of Lorriane's history/life? What did she die of?--great pic.---why does she seem obscure?--Linda Jones seems more familiar than Lorraine. |

I got very lucky--a couple of years ago, I came across not one but TWO sealed copies of the Lorraine Ellison CD on Ichiban, for only $2! I bought one for myself and convinced my friend Laura (who was running a booth at the record convention we were at) to buy the other to play on her college radio show. She wasn't sure about it, but she couldn't argue with the price. The next day, I tuned in to her show and heard two or three songs from the disc! It's worth picking up. Best, Mark |

I forgot--to answer your question, Jimmy, yes, it IS the same song as the one Janis did! She also covered Lorraine's "Try (Just a Little Bit Harder)", as well as another Jerry Ragovoy classic, Garnet Mimms's "Cry Baby". Best, Mark |

I think Lorraine started out with Mercury records but the only cut that meant much to me was her excellent version of her own song,I Dig You Baby which Jerry Butler made a hit. It was her Loma/Warner recordings that made Lorraine's name.It was more word of mouth than actual sales as none of her recordings went really big. Stay with me made it to #11 in the soul charts and #64 in BB pop chart. Others tracks I recommend are A Good Love and Only Your Love, in a similar vein to Stay with Me-but what a vein ! Jerry Ragovoy produced. Also from her Oliver Nelson arranged jazz-styled album,Heart and Soul, When Love Flies Away, pure class. Sadly I don't believe that has made it on to cd yet. She was married to Sam Bell, of the Enchanters, who I think became a minister. She returned to gospel singing; a great talent that was never fully developed by the industry. She was 50 or so when she died but I have not seen details of why she passed on. As she was from Philly, I wonder if Bobby E ever worked with her? |

I worked with and knew Lorraine well. In the summer of 1975, Norman Harris produced some songs on her for Columbia, but I am not sure if they were ever released. She was quite a fun and cool lady to be around. (Message edited by phillysoulman on July 11, 2004) |
