Anyone heard Morris Day's new release "Its About Time ? I saw it in a store yesterday and it's on Hollywood Records and contains 3 or four new songs plus 5 or 6 old songs (Cool, Fishnet, Jungle Love) that were recorded live ? I've seen him and whats left of the Time at many live performances but the outer jacket doesn't give you a clue. Frankly I would have purchased the CD but it was in the upper price range (14 smackeroos) to be exact and I just wasn't feeling it, nor have I heard anything on radio. Anyone got any background on this disc (producers, musicians)???? I must say he maintains his sense of humor, on the cover they have him standing in the middle of a swimming pool.......guess thats cool...... Kdubya |

Kdubya: This should answer some of your questions. "IT'S ABOUT TIME" Artist Morris Day Album Title It's About Time Date of Release Jun 22, 2004 AMG Rating Genre R&b Tones Party/Celebratory, Stylish, Sexual, Confident, Rousing, Playful, Sexy, Energetic, Bravado, Slick, Swaggering Styles Dance-Pop, Urban Morris Day is back 12 years after his last new record, but It's About Time isn't entirely new. It's mostly live, and considering the man's still got it on-stage, it should be good, right? Day's goofy-sexy swagger is still believable, when playing old Time tunes the band re-creates the perfect Prince production fairly well, and at least one of the new tunes is worth keeping, maybe two. The problem is Hollywood Records or somebody decided it was a good idea to edit out Day's curse words on the live cuts. So now you're treated to "Come on people! I wanna see you shake your...," and then nothing. It sounds silly, it makes you wonder if anyone in charge understands the target audience, and it totally breaks up the flow of the album. The excitement of the live tracks is nearly ruined by quick fade-outs to avoid audience noise or the next song coming in. The only bad thing you can say about the actual performances is that the band stumbles a bit on the intricate rhythm of "777-9311" (here just "777"). Otherwise, this is a hot show with Day adding a more James Brown feel to the Time's slick funk. How cool it would have been to hear the show unedited. The new tracks are moderate save an excellent partnering with the quirky-cool rapper E-40 for "In My Ride" but the chopping and hacking of the live show makes this collection "for hardcore fans only." 1. The Bird [live] (Day) - 4:13 2. Jungle Love [live] (Day) - 2:57 3. Gigolos Get Lonely Too [live] (Day) - 4:17 4. Cool [live] (Day) - 6:20 5. Ice Cream Castles [live] (Day) - 4:59 6. Get It Up/777 [live] (Day) - 5:23 7. Girl [live] (Day/Starr) - 2:46 8. Fishnet [live] (Day/Jam/Lewis) - 2:46 9. Ain't a Damn Thing Changed (Day/Whole 9) - 2:49 10. In My Ride performed by Day / E-Forty / E-40 - 4:16 11. Two Drink Minimum (Day/White/Whole 9) - 3:49 12. Last Night (Day/White/Whole 9) - 3:57 Morris Day - Producer Jesse Johnson - Producer E-40 - Guest Appearance Stephen Marcussen - Mastering Peter Mokran - Mixing Jamie Starr - Producer Ontario Haynes - Producer Adrin Martinez - A&R Brian Hood - Producer John Rhone - Producer, Photography |

Thanks so very much, NY-Dell, I was elated to hear your assessment, although I am quite disturbed that Morris/Hollywood records would edit out some of Morris's more flavorful verbal shots because thats where he excells at being cool. The Time has never been vulgar but playfully "mannish" and like I said nothing could ever be taken from their stage shows, these guys have still got it. The one thing I have always loved about Morris/Time was they never took themselves seriously and were always winking at their audience. I took my oldest son to see them a couple of years ago at the House of Blues in Chicago and they tore the place up. He never lets me forget how great he thought they were live ..........and the band played on.... Kdubya |
