Nine years ago today, Phyllis Hyman left this planet to find peace and tranquility. God is good and surely He's given her that peace. She is greatly missed. (Message edited by linda di fsg on June 30, 2004) |

God, I miss her. I will never forget her just walking in to a Gerald Albright (I think)show in a small club here in Chicago. He made the mistake of letting her sing a couple of song. The poor man never got his show back. She simply blew him off the stage. It was an amazing performance. She was a very underated, but truly gifted vocalist. |

You know, there something that still baffles me. Why would someone so successful and talented take her own life. |

Dinelle, to my understanding Phyllis had some internal "demons" she was battling. I'm sure more SDF members can speak to this better than I can. I can say though, being in the entertainment business is not all it's cracked up to be, especially behind the scenes. Everyone can't handle it. Handsome |

I remember seeing Phyllis on VIDEO SOUL. During the interview, she was rather straighforward about her problems with the industry. Among other things, body image was seen as a prequisite for selling records. I've read that Phyllis struggled with her weight. Also from reading, I gather that she probably was suffering from great depression stimulated by a chemical imbalance. |

As someone who's seen his share of demons, internal and external, if she didn't leave a note or tell someone what was truly troubling her, we'll NEVER know. More times than not, when someone in the "industry" commits suicide, the talk generally centers around what part of the "biz" pushed them to the brink. Oft times the reality couldn't be further from the truth. I feel for her and more importantly for those who truly loved her whom she left behind. |

I asked this question before in a Phyllis Hyman thread.... Does anyone know about the project her & Nancy Wilson was working on? Nancy spoke about this in the liner notes sleeve of Phyllis' cd-I Refuse To Be Lonely. Handsome |

Hi, Soulful Family. I likes a lot the Phyllis Himan voice in "It Takes Two". Curiously, another favorite female voice of mine, Carmen Lundy, I believe was her friend. In the linner notes of his "Old Devil Moon" CD, Carmen says especials thanks and dedication to Phyllis, My especial inspiration for "In A Sentimental Mood". RIP Phyllis Hyman, your legacy it's forever. Peace & Soul Food |

Hi everyone, This beautiful angels' troubles have been well documented. She left a note & actually began calling certain friends to basically say goodbye. I'd rather not try to analyze her troubles. Here is some information from someone who knew her. Perhaps it may lend more information than my speculation: http://www.waliditayim.com/gle nda.html Also, a link to comments of her brother: http://www.emediawire.com/rele ases/2004/4/prweb116712.htm There is also a newsletter: http://kenyada.com/phyllishyma n_newsletter.htm Also, here's a link to some comments mad by Jennifer Holliday, who also tried to commit suicide due to depression: http://www.findarticles.com/p/ articles/mi_m1264/is_2_30/ai_5 4831757 Here's a link to some nice b\w pics of phyllis, including one of a teen Phyllis: http://www.divasthesite.com/Si nging_Divas/Gallery/Gallery_Ph yllis_Hyman.htm (Message edited by juicefree20 on July 01, 2004) |

Hey SDF, I don't remember her singing any of her hits. She did standards backed up by Albright's band. It became more of a jam, but it was on. She was an impressive woman to see in person. She was over six feet tall in heels. Not fat, but certainly not anything like the skinny waifs were used to seeing now. I think at the time of her death she was very dispondant about the direction of her career and lack of recognition. I often wonder what would have happened if she had hooked up with someone like Kenny Edmonds. She might still be here and we wouldn't know who Tony Braxton is. |

I cry every time I think of Phyllis Hyman not being here to create the wonderful music the way only she could. I'm so sorry she did not know just how beautiful, talented, and loved she was. Out of all the musicians who have come and gone, her passing has been the most painful to me. |

I agree with you. Her loss was so painful because of the talent, beauty & as far as most of us knew, she was classy. She was the total package & her stlye would have never grown old. Her talent was timeless. As long as there are people who live, love, search & hurt, she would have always been relevant. I believe that eventually the rest of the world would have caught up to her. That's the danger of trying to stick artists into neat little genres. Phyllis simply couldn't be defined that shallowly. She transcended genres. |
