I just got a good CD version of "Sad Sweet Dreamer" by Sweet Sensation on a 70's compilation. The song came out in 1974, and I've always liked it. The lead singer sounds young and soulful, and I'm not sure if they were from the US or UK. I think Tony Hatch produced the record, and he had worked with Petula Clark. Anyone else remember this song? |

Hi, Garo! I got two singles by the UK vocal quartet Sweet Sensation: -"Mr Cool" / "Yes Miss No Miss" (produced byDes Parton & Tony Hatch), PYE, 1975 -"Mail Train" / "treat That Little Girl Right" (produced by Tony Hatch, Ray Roberts, Des Parton & David Ions), PYE, 1977. I don't knows the one you refered. Here in Spain, "Mr. Cool" was considered as simply disco music, but i find it some soulful and funk (the rythm remind me in "Give The People What They Want"). Peace & Soul Food |

Sweet Sensation were the winners of a TV Talent Show here in the UK called New Faces. Tony Hatch - what an awesomely talented writer and producer - was one of the judges. After the show, he signed them up to a deal and cut Sad Sweet Dreamer; think it reached number one here. The lead singer was very young; perhaps 12 or 13. We soul fans couldn't take them too seriously because of the cheesey talent show, but in retrospect it's a lovely song and gorgeous arrangement. But then, Tony hatch did write and produce Pet clark on "Downtown". 'Nuff said! |

This is all from memory, so some things might be incorrect. Probably only the facts! Sweet Sensation was a British group, who appeared on the UK TV talent show "New Faces." Tony Hatch was one of the judges and got them a record deal. He later emigrated to Australia and composed the worst TV soap theme tune of all time. I also have always liked "Sad Sweet Dreamer" and lots of other people did at the time because it went to number 1 in the UK pop charts in 1974. A self-titled LP was released the next year on the Pye label, with ten tracks including the quite funky and good "Mr. Cool." The lead singer Marcel was young, certainly younger than the others. |

O.K.to get it into perspective Sweet sensation(according to Marcelle Harris-the lead singer-he looked like a young Michael Jackson)they were from the Wolverhampton area of England and were intended as the U.K.EQUIVALEnt of the J.5.yES THEY FOUND FAME ON a rather crap T.V.show but---SAD SWEET DREAMER and PURELY BY COINCEDENCE -in the early 70,s were as good as there counterparts in the U.S.A. I.M.H.O. LOVE AND STUFF TO ALL Tony.C. |

I love their album 'Sad Sweet Dreamer' (This is the title of the US version, the UK pressing was eponymous). I also have a tv performance on laserdisc where they perform the title track. Indeed the lead singer sounds like a young MJ... The album was issued in the UK with a cover showing 4 members of the group but the US release had a clown crying on the cover... And 'Mr Cool' certainly has on of the most instantly recognizable intro there is with the laughing bag and the heavy clavinet riff... Great song! Wonder B If you mess with my 'fro, you gotta go! |

Blaise, my copy of the LP doesn't have the umbrella logo in the top-right corner. Just thought you'd like to know! LOL I bought it for 25 pence (about 50 cents) in Woolworths. Ho happy day! :-) |

Check out ' Hide away from the sun' (I think) by them which is another nice number. I met them in Hull around 1974 at a club where they performed the same night as Showaddywaddy (at another club). I was invited back stage after their show and they were disappointed at the turn out. They were talented and underrated. The Real Thing started the same way, from memory, appearing on Opportunity Knocks. |

I'd forgoten The Real Thing were on Opportunity Knocks; you've got quite a memory Carl. Eddie Amoo (lead singer) was formely a member of the Chants; they had moderate success around Liverpool in the 60's, but Pye just couldn't break them big time. |

Dayo - Are you aware of The Real Things' - ' Plastic Man' on EMI, before their Pye stuff? In my opinion, their best ever! Well before its time. |

It rings a bell Carl, but few of us took home grown soul too seriously back then, did we? The Amoo brothers certainly wrote some great songs though. |
