I'm also missing the "shouting" style of posting by Stubass, and of course the content of his posts. Perhaps he is here in Spain playing Golf (as he says that he loved!! ??). Hey, Soul Sister, about DyvaNaye, what happen? She should be here as she is many months ago the soul of the party! Also, what happen wth SisDetroit and LindaDi? This forum is a sort of salad with his spices, salt'n'pepa and others ingredients (Soul Sister, SisDetroit, Dyvanaye,... and other soulful womans) without wich the salade is insipide! Manny, What does that make me....chopped liver? After their ballet recital, which spotlighted music and dance from around the world, my grands have been after me to play them "Mexican" music. I tried some Arturo Sandoval, but they wanted music they could dance to. My pickings for Latin dance music were slim, but they seem to really like Celia Cruz. Do you have any popular recommends? I'm leaning towards Santana which I have plenty of. In the past they've enjoyed both Los Lobos and the Iguanas, but now they want instrumentals. |

Hi, friend Destruction! Latin music is so varied! Also, the limits betwen Latin Jazz, Salsa, Boogaloo or Salsoul are many times very hard to establish. Here in Spain the popular orchestras that played in popular partys, plays latin music standars when the party is at the climax or in the last part. Usually, the repertoire includes Gypsy King's "Bamboleo" or Charlie Parker's "Tico Tico", a "latinized" cover of Ellington's "Caravan"... Also, Prez Prado's "Guaglione". Recently I heard frequently the "Danzn" CD (GRP Records) by Arturo Sandoval that includes some very good fusion of flamenco and descarga and also "Conga" and latin funk ("Coconut Groove"). If I should to play a "jam session" of latin popular music as a improvised deejay, I think that plays, among others: -"Oye Cmo Va" (By Tito Puente, not the cover more famous by Santana) -"Un Da Ms" - Chichi Peralta -"Marie Laveaux" - Cubansimo -"Bamboleo" - Fania All-Stars feat. Celia Cruz -"Ella Fu" - Fania All-Stars -"El Rey De La Puntualidad" - Fania All-Stars -"Encuentro" - Irakere Anything by Fania All-Stars is worth for dance. All got vocals but are predominantly instrumentals. I can also recomend a 2 x CD by UK Unionsquare, "Latin Jazz, The Essential Album" (published in 2002). If I recall in others material recommendable I post it again. Peace & Soul Food |
