I was just speaking to my brother-in-law Nigel on the telephone and he said that I should look again at an inner sleeve from one of the LPs Motown re-issued in the 1980s. I chose "Hi, We're The Miracles" ('cos I don't have the original) and what he said was there was there. Well spotted, lad! For a company like Motown, he thought it was surprising and so do I. If you don't know what I'm talking about, have a look for yourself! :-) |

Well, I'm in suspense, Tony. Was there more than one version of the inner-sleeve? All I have is the black & white one that starts with Commodores' "Machine Gun" in the top left corner, and I don't see anything peculiar. |

Hi Tony! I'll take a shot here. Back in the 80s, I replaced some of my LPs with those Motown reissues that you speak of. One of the LPs that I replaced was the very "UN" Motown stylings of one Albert Greene, better known as Al Green. I have a few of his LPs that were re-issued on Motown. Believe it or not, for some reason that really annoyed me as Al wasn't a Motown artist. I also found the mastering of those Motown re-issues to be sorely lacking bottom when compared to the Hi originals. The funky Bill Cosby had re-issues on Motown as well. Ironically, Motown didn't purchase the rights to Bills' MUSIC Lps which is a shame. Bill made some seriously funny dance cuts..."Little Ole Man"....umm,umm,umm. Hello Everyone. I'm also intrigued .. Like Juice I thought that this could be a reference to some material from the Hi label appearing on Motown .. ( I have a double L.P. of WILLIE MITCHELL material as one of these re-issues ). However .. then there was the "Look a Little Bit Closer its easy to Trace" post .. and that makes me think of a certain Mr Robinson. Please put us out of our misery Tony B. Roger P.S. .. Juice, that "Little Old Man" track was a big NS tune in the mid-70s and even got a release in the U.K. on Warner as a result. Its recently been included on the WEA compilation "After Hours Volume II". And for those of you unfamiliar with "Little Old Man" .. its an adaptation of STEVIE WONDER's "Uptight". Roger |

Hi Roger, Thank you for the info. I think that you're onto something there. The only problem is that some of the re-issues had different inner sleeves. Hmm, maybe I'd better check again. Man, I feel like Colombo. I didn't know that they played Little Old Man on the NS circuit. I bet that you guys got a great laugh out of that. Thanks for the info. Now let me find Mrs Colombo, got a mystery to solve |

For the later reissues, there was a blue-tinted sleeves that had trivia questions. But I didn't notice anything strange. Of course, its been many years since I looked at one. C'mon, Tony, 'fess up. :-) |

I bet you all think it's something really shocking! He he For those people who don't have any, the inner sleeves of the reissues have little photos of various album covers, similar to the originals. The Hi connection is not the answer, sorry. I also have the Willie Mitchell double LP, which has blue-tinted sleeves. These are no good, you need to have a black and white one. Uptight, everything will be all right if you take a look around (your inner sleeve)! LOL (Message edited by tony_b on June 28, 2004) |

Well, I turned it over, and all I can see is they're showing the "rat" cover for "Ben," which was actually released this way, originally, before they quickly changed its design. Also they are showing photos of the original covers with their original Soul and Tamla logo designs when all the reissues were pressed on Motown label. Could this be the matter? Maybe it's the fact that they are showing three Grover Washington albums? Motown did distribute the label he was on, too. Tony, are you pulling our collective leg? LOL. This could be a case where if you look hard enough, you are bound to find something wrong, however unintentional by the Motown staff at that time. I still don't see anything. |

Hey Tony: I'll bite and give it a shot! I don't have the reissues so I am going off of the scan. On the Martha & the Vandellas lp it seems to have ring wear from the LP that was inside of the jacket. It is visable on the scan above them from about 11 to 3 o'clock if you used a face of the clock to chart it. So it appears that they did not have a clean copy of the Martha lp when they shot the sleeve art work. If I am right from what I can see, it appears that Motown had a quality control issue??? IMHO |

Hey Wonder B!! Where did you find that LP??? I used to have it, but it was stolen. I've been trying to find it ever since, with no luck. I like "1,2,3 teeth is all you have left mama. One up top, one bottom front & one on the side. Don't lose what you got mama. 3 from 3, you won't have no ABC. You'll have the letter O engraved on your lips". That was a funny LP. Westbound 181 is "Wear This Ring (With Love)" by the Detroit Emeralds! ha,ha If you look carefully, you can just make out the wear on "Meet The Temptations." On the other side of the inner sleeve, "The Supremes at The Copa" has quite bad ring wear, making four worn covers altogether. But there's something else clearly visible on the scan ... |

The same thing (ringwear) carried over to several Motown cd re-issues in the late 80's. Harry Weinger, however, seems to be meticulous in his search for mint covers for recent re-issues. |

Tony B, Do you mean the triangle in the upper left corner (often the sign of a cut-out) on the Isley Brother's lp?. I decided to pull out a few re-issue lp's of the same series and noticed something else that is interesting. Obviously someone complained/pointed these covers out to Motown or perhaps Motown printed them until they found a collector with mint copies- for there are better covers (no ringwear)of the same albums on some of the later?)inner sleeves. For example, Martha & the Vandellas Heatwave is switched from the mono ringwear cover to a stereo sticker cover with no ringwear. Sorry, I do not have access to a scanner, so I am unable to show this. Perhaps somone else who has some of these re-issues can pull out their inner sleeves and verify. |

We have another winner - P.J. ! "This Old Heart Of Mine" is a cut-out! LOL The stereo "Heatwave" cover on the blue-tinted inner sleeves looks like a reissue, as the Gordy logo is blanked out. I think "This Old Heart Of Mine" is the same cut-out copy, but with the missing triangle filled in! :-) |

The sad thing was that most people didn't seem to mind...not me though! It's a similar story with the Motown Yesteryear 45 series. I was horrified to hear that collectors' well-loved-and-played original vinyl complete with clicks and hiss. seemed to have been used as masters. In some cases, the (different) album version was used - listen to "Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart" for example. I considered that somebody ought to be answerable for these mess-ups |

Gosh, I had assumed those old Yesteryear 45s were all sourced from original singles masters. Tsk, tsk... btw: Do you guys think it is possible to somehow have album artwork unglued from its cardboard backing to "expand" the artwork and reveal the rest of it? Would it be like a steam process? (Like steam-opening a letter?). In cases where the art extends beyond the edge of the front cover and is flipped back, I always thought it would be interesting to have a more revealing version. |
