I just heard the song "Bring The Boys Home", and I burst into tears. I know the song was out in 1971, but I was not mature enough to really grasp the lyrics. But today upon hearing the lyrics it really hit home, her singing about a war situation that was current in 1971 and is still apropos in 2004. I wonder if Dennis Coffey played on that song?

The abbreviated lyrics are:

Bring The Boys Home
Bring Them Back Alive

Turn The Ships Around
Everybody Lay Your Weapons Down

What They Doing Over There Now
When We Need Them Over Here Now

Hi Vonnie,

Though I was a kid, I was very aware of Vietnam, having had a cousin who was there at that time. It's so sad when you realize that over 30 years later, those songs are still rellevant today. We shall overcome & we did. But, to what end??? We're still going in circles, all of these years later. Just about any of those songs of the 70s, still apply today. What did we learn, wasn't anybody listening???

Either they listend, but they didn't hear...or they heard and didn't listen.
History has a way of repeating itself, if it's not corrected/changed...and "IF" Man would practice their belief they claim, it would be no need for troubles, persecutions and wars. and so it is...
wars~~~and rumors of wars~~~
"Let there be Peace", but Man CAN'T comprehend Peace and they never will as long as the mind is carnal...(jealousy, arrogance, hate, lies & deceit, thievery etc).
Earthly beings are physical, very physical...and so everything that exists, is seen only with the physical eye, which is limited to just that...the physical, but the claim is that the Almighty is spiritual. So, are we on AM and our Almighty is on FM ???
Bring the Boys home, and let's start again...this time with Feeling.

HI VONNIE,
YES,DENNIS PLAYED ON THAT SONG,AND SO DID I,AND EDDIE WILLIS,AND BABBITT.
WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF FREDA AS A GUEST ARTIST(WITH THE FUNKS) IN RALEIGH,RECENTLY,AND SHE PERFORMED THE SONG.
I REMEMBER THINKING THE SAME THOUGHTS AS MENTIONED HERE,WHEN SHE SANG HER HEART OUT.
THE AUDIENCE LOVED IT,ALONG WITH THE REST OF HER PERFORMANCE.AS YOU SAID,IT'S VERY SAD THAT THE SONG IS STILL JUST AS RELEVANT TODAY AS IT WAS SOME THIRTY YEARS AGO.

Medusa,
That's a very good point & very perceptive as well. Most of us indeed, live our lives in the physical. I won't be hypocritical, as I do as well. However, the heart is important & I try to have a good heart & to have compassion for those less fortunate than me. Many people see a homeless person & turn up their nose saying "That will never happen to me". I see a homeless person & say: If not for the grace of God, that could be me. I could be riding high today, yet end up flat on my back tomorrow. I thank God for the little things & that's what's important to me.

Ray,
It is indeed sad. If we look at the hits of those days, they fit in perfectly with these times. Songs like: Wake Up Everybody, Bad Luck, For The Love Of Money, Living For The City, War, What's Goin' On, to name just a few, are just as relevant in their message these 30 some odd years later. I often wonder, what went wrong??

Medusa, well said.

It always amazes me that young songwriters can create songs with such deep meaning. What a strong grasp they seem to have on life's philosophies. They often tell stories that sound like they are coming from an old wiseman--maybe it's their grandparents or somebody older.

"Someday We'll All Be Free" - Donny Hathaway
"Stoned Love" - Frank Wilson, Thomas Kenney
"Wake Up Everybody" - Gamble & Huff
"What's Going On" - Al Cleveland, Marvin Gaye, Obie Benson

What strikes me is that the politicians who are in charge now, were kids when songs like these were hits and they might actually have bought the records! Incredible. Our generation was against sending our own boys to a country where they would either kill a lot of innocent people or being killed themselves, howcome we do exactly the same now?

Hi Soulkikker,

You are on point there. I guess that I have one time proven axiom that always seem to fit:

ABSOULUTE POWER CORRUPTS ABSOLUTELY!!

I keep falling into the trap & blaming politicians for the problems. In reality, politicians do the bidding of their masters....BIG BUSINESS!! I think that we forget who lobbies & fill coffers with campaign funds, among other things. Hell, watch what happens to any politician who ruffles the wrong corporate feathers. Beware the ides of two year old stained dresses & snooping media. They'll know what that guy ate for lunch in the third grade when they finish digging into his past.

Still, I blame us for forgetting the sins of the past. I blame us for condoning wrong. We complain sitting on our couches, yet, don't get riled up enough to be proactive about it. Yes, that goes for me also. Damn!!! I'm a hypocrite regarding this. Oh well, I do vote! Guess I better get started on some serious songwriting.

CHECK PLEASE!

Dear Ray,

I'm so happy to hear that Freda performed that song at the Raleigh gig. I thought that you guys must have played on that song but I was not certain. The lyrics and the music are beautiful and moving.

Ray, could you please tell me who wrote that song? Thanks

VONNIE,
I'M SURE FREDA SINGS THAT SONG WHEREVER SHE PERFORMS,BECAUSE IT IS ON THE MARK IN THESE TIMES.SHE IS SUCH A CLASSY LADY,AND HER BEAUTIFUL,HAUNTING VOICE REALLY TOUCHES ALL THAT ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HEAR HER.
THE SONG WAS WRITTEN BY ANGELO BOND,GENERAL JOHNSON,AND GREG PERRY.IT WAS RECORDED AFTER HOLLAND,DOZIER,HOLLAND LEFT MOTOWN.THEY WERE USING FALSE NAMES AS WRITERS,SO I'M NOT SURE IF ONE OR MORE OF THESE THREE COULD REALLY BE H.D.H.
GENERAL JOHNSON IS THE LEAD SINGER OF "CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD".WE PLAYED ON THEIR RECORDS TOO.
THEY ACTUALLY SHOWED UP AT OUR REHEARSAL IN RALEIGH,TO SAY HI TO EVERYONE.THAT WAS QUITE A SURPRISE.

It to makes me cry, I was out that concert, seated next to a retired Marine. We talked about many things and how we wish they were home, but a job must be finished. I have friends still in country, some just back and some serving the Lord in a new way. Politics aside, I want them all back now, but the animal had to go.

HEY CALEB,
GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU,HOPE ALL IS WELL.
IT'S GREAT WORKING WITH BOB AND ALL THE GUYS!
IT'S LIKE GOING BACK IN TIME,BUT FRESH AND NEW AT THE SAME TIME.I JUST GOT A CUSTOM GUITAR THAT WAS MADE FOR ME,AND THE GUY THAT BUILT IT HAS OFFERED TO MAKE ONE FOR EDDIE AND BABBITT.
NONE OF THE GUYS HAVE CHANGED A LICK,JUST AGED LIKE FINE WINE.THEY'RE ALL THE SAME GOOD HEARTED PEOPLE THAT THEY'VE ALWAYS BEEN.AND....OBVIOUSLY,STILL PLAYING THEIR A...S OFF!!
THE ONLY NEGATIVE IS THAT WE'RE NOT IN THE SAME CITY.IT MAKES IT A LITTLE TOUGH FOR REHEARSALS,BUT WE JUST GO IN A DAY EARLY BEFORE THE SHOWS ,AND DO IT THEN.

MIKE CAMPBELL SEEMS TO BE SETTLED IN OUT IN WYOMING.WE STILL TALK NOW AND THEN.

I'm looking forward hearing that singing of your
new guitar in my ears :-)))
This is really a pretty piece of craftsmanship!!

Hope everything is fine with you (I bet you ARE
feeling fine when playing with your Funk Brothers fellows).

And I hope you still have plans for playing in Europe! Can't wait to see you guys again!

Cheers
