I was pleasantly suprised to see a couple of copies of "Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars" at Borders today. The book looks really professional, and just skimming through it, it looked well worth the price. I hope Dennis has a lot of success with it.

Hi Juice. I don't know about appearing in New York. I may go there to hang out at Elaines and see some friends of mine. I keep trying to find the time to do all of the things I like to do. I'll let you know if I go.

I just bought the book at Border's in Oak Park IL. There was only one copy on the shelf.

It's a pretty good read. Great job by "The Rock N' Roll Kid"!

The book comes with a great cover too!

Hi Juicefree. They didn't isolate the tracks but I did all of the rhythm guitar tracks. I played the lead guitar band parts on guitar along with Ray Monette from Rare Earth and Joe Podorsek on guitars.

Dennis - When I picked up your book at Border's, the salesMan was so interested in looking through your book, it took him awhile to ring up the rest of my order. He seemed surprised and pleased. :-)

As of three days ago, there are only two of those books left on Ford Rd, and Mercury Dr.

I'm too far away to get my copy signed, but I'm certainly learning a lot about the music--and there's even some information about Moderator Ralph ... and a character who puts me in mind of "Paulie 3$hoes," and that's scary! (and Paulie, if I have to wind up with the fishes, make mine Nova Scotia salmon)

Dennis, if you see this, I just wanted to mention how great it is that university presses are willing to support the arts of the people in this way! When I was a working stiff, I selected books for public libraries (I'll make sure our local library buys this) and university press publications practically inspired yawns sitting on the shelves.

Thanks for a great combination of information and good humor.

Bob F.

Mr. Dennis. I was chatting with my older sister about the record "Scorpio" on Sussex label. She told me she and her friends used to dance "the crawl" during the drum solo. And I told her that when I attended Monnier Elementary in Detroit, "Scorpio" was the only record we had to entertain us in the gym whenever it was too rainy outside during lunch period. I have been wondering ever since you joined SDF if you had possibly donated this 45 to the school. I told her I would ask you.

The tune is so good, we never got tired of playing the record over and over at school! Thank you for recording it. I am so glad it is included on the SITSOM Deluxe Edition that I bought two copies. Now I can hardly wait to purchase a copy of your book.

Hi Uptight. I didn't donate Scorpio to the school. It was great that somebody liked it enough to keep playing it. I also attended Clinton Elementary, Post Intermediate, Mackenzie High and Wayne State University. All of my education was in Detroit.

Dennis,I just finished the book. Man'it sure brings back old times. The Dixie Belle bar, remember Randy Sea and the Valiants were there for a long time. Of course the gala events at the West Fort Tavern(i.e. fights). I believe you, myself, Babbit, and George K. worked there for a short while. Iknow I worked there with other people. What a rough place! I remember one night a Scottish band from Windsor came in in kilts after a show in Detroit. I thoght there would be a huge fight, the (ahem)southern gentlemen that were regulars would normaly use any excuse to pick a fight. Not a bad word was said to them. In fact they were buying them drinks.Amazing!

The old teen-club days, man that women who booked the bands (Mrs. Shroder of something like that) could make or break a teen band. One had to really grovel around her to keep in her good graces if you wanted to play the teen-clubs in the Detroit area. That fifteen dollars a gig was great money considering how much one made as a stock boy or working at Franks nursery..

Thanks for the memories, what you've acomplished in music, most musicians couldn't do in two life times.
Lynn

The American/Canadian version of the book is different. At the request of the University of Michigan Press, I did a rearrange and added additional material. Even the cover is different.

Dennis

I just finished reading your book. It was a nice compliment to the recent SITSOM film. It was unfortunate that you were not able to play on the Cloud Nine session for the movie.
I was overwhelmed with all the great songs that you were on- all the way back to the great Del Shannon.
One thing I noticed through out the book is the confidence that you always had in yourself- even if it was working on the assembly line.
If your ever in the D.C. area, I would love to talk with you.
Call me a Coffey kind of guy.

TD
