Good people of The Clubhouse. I've been having some conversations lately regarding Soul Music. What are the ingredients that makes Soul Music Soulful to you. What nuances & components do you think add to the overall construction of this powerful music?? In short, tell me what Soul music is to you & what gives it its strength & vitality??? Any thoughts??? Talk to me! |

For me, Soul Music has to be conveyed in a very sincere fashion and from the very depth of human emotion. Soul music does not necessarily have to be melismatic or"over the top" but once again, I emphasize 'sincere'. It could lie anywhere from a whisper to a scream, as long as it is from the heart. Soul is Sam, Otis,James and Aretha, but it could also be Patsy Cline and Willie Nelson because they were and are sincere and believable. When Ben E. sang Stand by me, you felt it from deep within. When James Carr sang Dark end of the street, you felt it. When Willie Nelson sang Always on my mind, you felt it. Soul cannot be faked. Imo, NONE of the current crop of divas have soul because just because you can do a gymnastic run, you dont have that je nei se quas that seperates the real from the manufactured. I could go on and on about this subject, but so many artists have been over rated and their soul is only recognized as such thru other sources that have nothing to do with the music. So in closing I will say "keep the SOUL alive and recognize the genuine article when it hits you or else you dont eat chicken on Sunday"!! (Message edited by phillysoulman on June 26, 2004) |

Bobby has said it all, I agree 100% with my spiritual brother. I'll add someone singing from their true life experiences, you can hear and feel the emotion deep down be it pain or joy. Just listen to Jimmy sing "Motherless Child", that says it all. It moves and touches others in a very spiritual profound way, moving people to tears because he's baring his true soul. He'll break your heart because you know it's the life he had to live. There's such feeling and genuine pain in it. From my own experiences I've come to understand soul or a soulful feeling comes from the things you went through, trials and tribulations. Thats hard to explain to someone who has not experienced those type of experiences and does not know the feeling of raw soul, most do not feel that deep and cannot be touched in such a way there fore can't relate to someone who has lived that side of life. Confused? LOL, some will be... some will know just where I'm coming from because of their own soul. 'nuff said, ya' dig? S.S. |

Hi again, Soulful Family! After reading what says Mr. Electronic, it's imposible to add something more. From a subjective point of wiew, if I heard jazz i can found swing or not. If I heard flamenco, I can find "duende" or not. One person got "soul" and a machine not. What is the reason why rock music and pop etc. at 99,9% i found it "aseptic"? Response: don't got SOUL, don't got "AUTHENTICITY", capacity to transmit universal feelings. Peace & Soul Food |

I agree with all of the above. I think for me the answer to the question "What is Soul Music To Me" ? Simply put, It's music that has the ability to move me. It could be spiritually or emotionally. There is no set pattern, and it's nothing you can learn from a book found in your local library. You either have it, or you don't. Whatever "It" is, Marvin had it in spades, as did Curtis. Teena has it, as does Aretha, as did Minnie and Billie. As Bobby has already hinted at, I don't believe you have to be black as such, to have soul, although in many cases of course, it helps. Let's not forget, Grover Washington had the ability to move people with his sax, without even singing a single note. There are many artists over the years who have and will continue, to move us. So perhaps more acurately, I should have answered just what it is, that makes us be moved. I believe, it is their sincerity. |

My down to earth explanation of what Soul music is : It's music that gives me the goosebumps... whenever I am tickling all over and scratching my arms like crazy, I know I've been hit on the right spot... And to me only SOULFUL music can do that... It just so happens that it's what is called SOUL that has that effect on me, but I am sure other music styles induce the same feeling with other people. Wonder B If you mess with the 'fro, you gotta go! |

On point Bobby !! Ditto times 10... To me these PR made divas are not the REAL DEAL. They never have been through what the greats have gone through and have not walked a mile in their shoes. The feeling is coming from an entirely different place. Its not sincere or at least in its purest form. Everybody and thinks just because you can do "runs" that make you legit and thats not what its all about. PS: would the chicken be baked or fried? lol. |

...hmmmm, how did I ever miss this thread? S O U L, is what causes Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, David Ruffin, Shirley Ceasar, BeBe Winans, Ali Woodson, Dennis Edwards, Bobby Womack, Gladys Knight (Just 2 name a few), to express a story in a song, to overflow with feeling. It's the ingredient that's an intensed force of passion, spirit moving, earth shaking, Body rocking, tear dropping truth of giving more than the best of whatever it is that's being put forth...be it music, sports, cooking, rapping etc. It would be timeless to try to explain everything about SOUL...the experience that one can talk, sing, shout about, look back and wonder about how I got over...You don't know like I know about~~~ Once again, real soul is in the blood, (it's not learned) and what's in the blood, can't be taken out of the bones. |

Soul music is not only coming out of someone's mouth. There are many musicians that are VERY soulful, James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt on bass, Jack Ashford on percussion, Joe and Eddie on the 6 strings, Uriel and Pistol on the bang buckets, Joe and Johnny on the keys. I must say as of late, I have been listening Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, they play with soul, but Victor Wooten grooves in Soul in a class by himself. Soul is different for everyone, but the over-production and over-played "stars" of today do very little for me. Today's music lacks the ..... Soul I long for in my soul. Keep the bass line strong and your heart in the song Robert |

Bassin, I've seen them twice at Artscape and once on the telly. They're definitely an acquired taste...which I'm glad I've acquired. I think Victor will be playing a 12 string bass soon...or a 2 string...lol. On the subject of Soul. Soul is Ray Charles kicking his legs backwards, under himself, while singing and playing the piano, looking like he's gonna dive right into the piano. |

Regarding soul music. Just saw an ad on TV about a program to discover the new soul singers in traditional soul, hip hop soul, and they listed another 6 or so kinds of soul. I guess there are far more kinds of soul than anyone knows about. |

Soul was something I took for granted until after I left Motown and Detroit in 1972. Two key components that haven't been mentioned yet are that soul never talks up or down to you and soul isn't on an ego trip, at least not while it's being sung. It's also something that famous, really talented people don't always deliver but a great record producer will hold their feet to the fire and accept nothing less. We don't have a lot of great producers around today and it shows in the quality of lots of today's recorded singing. |
