Hello S.S.

As usual, it's good to see you. I'm glad to know that he's smiling. I feel great just knowing that he is enjoying some much overdue accolades. Everytime I turn around, you guys are off to the races. If you don't slow down, you are gonna have to write yet another update to the book & documentary. But then again, I'm sure that we wouldn't mind reading another 20 years of posts like these of yours! Many are called, few are chosen. Looks like Mr Jim has been chosen! Ahh... The wonders of Cancerians!

I haven't heard too much of that lately but thank you. As always, your kindness humbles me. I'm not the best though, I haven't had an Award Winning Documentary written about my life. I'm working on it though :-)
Mom is always number 1 on the list. When I count my son, brother & sister, I can be no higher than #5 on the list. But like Avis, I try hard!!!!

I applaud you Juice, you stand for what's fair and thats not even mentioning your vast music knowledge, I wish more people could be as objective as you.

Hey All,

Good morning SS. I think it is great that out of all the films PBS produced - Mr. Scott's takes home the top prize. You have been right all along SS. Mr. Scott is still a viable and appreciated entertainer. What a great legacy he is still making. Bless his heart.

Yes girlie-girl - I still have a ton of boxes to unpack. Thanks for wishing me well - by the way. I am looking around this smaller house and wondering where I'm going to put all of my belongings still packed up. LOL! I moved from a three-level to a one. LOL! I threw and gave alot away and still got a long way to go.

Anyway like my father stated - "take your time and don't kill yourself trying to unpack so quick", and he is right. Plus - I have to get rid of some empty boxes on the back patio this week - so I can have room to put more out there. I'll unback a few boxes a day until I get on that roll towards the end. LOL!

Anyway - you all have a great day. "Celebrate." (Good times - come on!)

Hi Soul Sister,

Thank you again. Again you are most kind with your words. I can be a jerk just like the next person. My theory is this, I have a son, I have friends & I have a mother. I wouldn't want to write anything here that I would be ashamed for them to see. That would be a bad reflection on me.

Just because this is the internet doesn't mean that I have to be a jerk to those who I disagree with. I guarantee you this, if we were all in a room together, half of the crap that is said online would never be said. It's easy to be brave sitting in front of a computer. It's not so easy when your protagonist is standing before you. The silence would be deafening!

I was raised correctly by a mother who demanded fairness. My oldest sister was born mentally handicapped. As a result, I know what it's like to have people pick at less fortunate people. As a result of those experiences, I detest those who flaunt their superiority & bully others. As a result, I can't imitate what I hate. That would make me worse than them.

It's like hunters. You ever see a hunter give a lion a 50 yard head start??? Of course they don't. They brag about what game they bagged as though they won a one on one boxing match. Now, if the lion had a fair chance, we all know how that would go, don't we??? It's a good thing that animals aren't like people. I sure wouldn't want my head hanging in a lions' den!

That's really the secret to who I am & what makes me tick. I simply detest bullies that don't like level playing fields. Again, moms is to thank. She didn't go for any bullying.

Thanks again S.S. It was nice to finally speak with you & Mr Jim sending that shout out was great!! You guys are the tops!!!
:-)
Juice

Dear Juice,

As usual a very heartful post. I too have always been the person who has stood up for the underdog, because I believe in the greatest precept ever written, "Love Thy Neighbor". I detest bullies and applaud your mother for your wonderful and soulful upbringing. Jimmy Scott is a man who has turned the other cheek and let those who have done him wrong not get him down. Jimmy is a real gentleman and so are you Juice. I am so proud of Jimmy and I'm grateful to know him and to also know you.

p.s. I have a nephew who is a special child, he has cerebral palsy and he is a blessing to my family.

I heard that Vonnie. You see, back in those days, special children were an embarassment to families. People felt shame. My sisters' situation was not genetic, she was premature & the conventional wisdom of the day (1956)was to leave the child inside the womb as long as possible.

Well, they left her there until they couldn't detect a heartbeat & by the time they got her out, she suffered from lack of oxygen. Now, she would seem "normal" as it wasn't genetic damage. However, her cognititve skills will always be that of a 6 year-old. As time goes on, she will only regress.

Naturally, as a kid, I heard the taunts, the snickers & all of that cruel garbage. But, we were never taught to be ashamed of her. When we went out, we took her with us. My mother didn't hide her away in a room like many did. In fact, she actually married at one point. We never made her feel like she didn't belong. Moms didn't play that. That's why I hate bullies. That's why I'm usually for the underdog.

That is what impresses me so about Mr Scott. This man bared his soul to us all. He tells the honest truth of his condition with no shame. Many people would never have done that & when people scream about the proverbial "skeletons" in the closet, Jimmy has laid open his soul for the world to see. How can you not admire Mr Jimmy Scott!!!

I've never met Jimmy, but I feel as though I know him & one day I'll have the pleasure of shaking the hand of the ultimate survivor. Those who have wronged him are gone. Mr Scott just keeps rolling along, with more honors, accolades & respect than ever. Now, that's SOUL MUSIC baby, for real!!! You feeling me on that???

Juice

Hi Juice;
Vonnie has said it so elequently. What can I add except to say I agree 100%. and RE: the lion thing...maybe if the lion had a gun too he would have an equally sporting chance. But it's not that way, as we all know, sport hunting (HAH..sport)is just a slaughter. Nice to see your a conservationist for animal rights too.:-) Gotta love it Juice! The way you stand up for justice everywhere. Good man.

Vonnie;
Thanks for your kind words too. Your one of a kind too, the best friend one could have. Thanks.

Juice;
Just read your second post...man, you have great perception too. You & Vonnie are both so correct in what you said, you hit the nail on the head. Know people born with disabilities are in the care & arms of God, they are very special in their own right, I've seen it firsthand.
I don't need to sing Jimmy's praises about the amazing human being he is, all one has to do is be in his presence one time and they'll witness his magic themselves and that has nothing to do with his uninhibited singing, no, I'm speaking purely about 'the man' seperately from his craft.
Time to see about him now so I'll say goodnight until tomorrow.
Take care,
S.S.

Hey Vonnie, I thank you for your kind words. As always, you've proven to be a real friend. In the past when you thought that I was about to go off of the deep end, you pulled me back in. Thanks for being a stand up person.

Soul Sister,
So, now you see why I say that I'm not doing anything special??? I am a person who at the age of 21, raised my son as a single father, with much help from Mom. People would say, how great a thing I was doing. I always said that it was no great thing to do, it was the right thing to do. I won't get into the specifics of how that came to be, however, I never understood why people thought it was a big deal. Why wouldn't I raise my own child???

After my wife died, the same year my Mom got sick. I took 3 months off from my job & almost got fired. I didn't care, my mother came first. I would have been a sorry person had I put my job before my mother. This year, I took a month & a half off when she have replacement valve surgery.

Again, people said how wonderful I was. I said B.S. it was the ONLY thing to do. There's nothing heroic about doing the right thing. This woman has been there for me my entire life & 2 months is too much to sacrifice??? I think not.

So, when I say what I say, I'm not pontificating. It's how I choose to live my life. I'm not rich, but I know that I've been blessed!

Think about it, if we could go back to the 1960s, would anyone have dreamed of this magical journey of Jimmy's? Who would have believed it?? Jimmy's story should be required reading & viewing. His story shows why one should never give up.

What's that they say: "Life begins at 40"? Well, sometimes the numbers are a little off. It only adds to the joy of the triumph!!!

Say hello to Mr Jim again for me!
As the song says: "See You In September"!!! :-)

Yea, I understand where your coming from, anyone with any heart at all would know it was naturally the right thing to do. I hope your Mom is doing well now.

As for Jimmy you hit the nail on the head, he never gave up, hense the title of his book "Faith In Time".:-) Jimmy has a little motto for his life "I may give out a little but I never give up".

Hey S.S.

Sounds like one big ole lovefest up in here. I'll tell you what, I certainly hope to have that kind of courage & determination under fire. I also pray that God bless me to be as strong as Jimmy. I'll tell you I admire the folks of his era. My generation doesn't seem to be made of the same stuff. I think that we're softer. Perhaps too much TV is to blame.

Seriously, my generation came of age at a good time in history. Folks like Jimmy paved the way for us. We were fortunate than their fights made life so much simpler & easier for us. I didn't say perfect, but a hell of a lot easier than they had it. I sure do appreciate it. I don't think I would have survive for long back then. I had too much of a temper.

Timing is everything!!!
Night S.S. :-)

Hi Soul Sister! What I liked most about the special was not the music per se but the love the Scott family has for Jimmy and for each other. It was quite obvious in the interviews and the look on their faces when they talked about Mr. Scott and vice versa.

Having learned all that I have in this forum over the last year and finding myself 2/3rd's through the book (Faith In Time), this news ranks up there with the accolades, film and music awards, that the Funks have received over the last few.

In the words of an OK Soul singer, "Ain't That Good News, Man Ain't That News"....

SoulSis,

You must have tremendous "Buffer" skills. I don't really know of a better way to put this, so I hope you'll understand....Jimmy's toooooo nice for the music biz.

Hey Nosey;
I don't want to burst anyone's bubble here but the truth of the matter is... that was the part of the documentry that was totally BOGUS. They only love to use him up, grab & steal and when they can't do that or get over on him, then they don't have nothing to do with him. Most of them only have use for him when they can get something from him otherwise they don't know him. I wouldn't treat a dog like that. They give new meaning to the words dysfunctional, parasitic, hypocrite, & get over mentality. Because they know that family or the true meaning of family is what's most important to Jimmy, so all thru his life they used that to get over on him. He's helped them "all" over & over again thru the years and still they used his name messing up his credit and too many things to waste space here on. Jimmy's been very open publicly about it, it hurts him deeply that they could do their own brother so bad as he would never disrespect them in any way, he's always done all he could to help them, and he don't have a whole lot more than they do, thats the crazy thing. I understand their behavior is due to their background experiences, losing their mother at a young age, having a negligent father who's behavior was immature, hard times, going thru foster care but that doesn't make it right to take advantage of Jimmy's good nature & generosity, he just wanted to show them love, they abused it. This is all common knowledge to insiders, friends over the years, ex-wives & girlfriends who went thru hell with his family (because they saw them as a block from getting over on him), even industry people and reporters are aware of this. Jimmy tries to include his siblings in his documentries even though it's a fractured relationship, they paint a hypocritical picture for the public, and have little to do with him in private unless they can get something out of him. In other words he gives generously but they expect him to pay for their love in return. It's appalling.

BTW Nosey, I'm the one who put on that big backyard barbeque, and made things possible for this documentry to be done to the extent it was.

Thats the real deal Nosey! Some who come on this forum who know Jimmy know these facts too. I don't want to see anyone hurt this man anymore he's been through enough in his lifetime and sadly alot of it from his own family. Jimmy's got shit from them, the industry, and from uninformed general public, he was treated unjustly, yet... as Vonnie mentioned, he's big enough to always turn the other cheek. Jimmy harbors no bitterness or anomosity towards his transgressors. Instead he's always sweet & kind to all he comes in contact with.

The other fault we have with the film is the director misled us a bit about what the documentry would reflect. Oh well, I think to some extent, in a small way he's trying to make up for his past mistakes. Other than that the film is cool. :-) The misleading of the film by the family esp. his sisters Nadine & Adoree was a shock to us!!
Cest'La Vie.......

Didn't start off intending to rant so much Nosey but it my fingers just flowed across the keyboard. LOL!!
Take care,
S.S.

Hi Destruction;
Thanks for that, Jimmy will be very pleased to hear your comments. He's humble & appreciative. You may be right he's too easy going with both the business & his family which in part also held him back through the years.

Glad you found the book a good read, David Ritz is brilliant and really gets to know his subjects inside out as well as all the players around that subject. Beautiful human being.

Des, that suffering from crooks & cut-throats in the business is still going on even at his age. The lack of concious by some agents & others is unbelievably outragious!! You have no idea. LOL!!
Take Care,
S.S.

Wow Soul Sister! His sibs are some good actors! They truly missed their calling. That just proves: believe half of what you see and none of what you see. Thanks for the insight and continue to "Stand By Your Man", Sis.

Hi Nosey;
Thats so correct, you have be here to witness it, as some folks have.
Thanks for your nice words Nosey.
Jimmy & I, only wish-- it could be a more equal loving family situation. It's just so sad, for they are all too old to keep living their lives that way. Hopefully, one day before it's too late, they'll see the light. We can only wish & pray so.

Hey Soulsis,

Hope all's well.

I just wanted to say MUCH PROPS and CONGRATS on the special heaping this honor. This news makes me smile. I trust Mr. Jimmy is pleased as well. As you know I enjoyed viewing that special. I mean, dizz-ZAMN! Mad inspiring! It proved both the catalyst & my freshman education in the life, times, music, soul and journey of Mr. Jimmy Scott.

As for the book, wow! Having read, enjoyed, been angered, saddened, but ultimately inspired & lifted by its contents, it's good to know Mr. Ritz is now getting his literary props as well. I believe, without having lived it personally, he managed to capture the true essence of Jimmy Scott, his voice, the times, the scene, industry and whole nine w/ much so much power, and yes, soul!

Hey! An idea just stroked my mind. Let's proclaim this: THE YEAR OF MR. JIMMY SCOTT!

Can a brotha get an Amen up in here?

Anyway, please continue to take good care of *yourself* Soulsis, & Mr. *Jimmy*, too! Ya heard?

Peace & Blessings to you all.

One.

MM
