From 1958, the flip is "Chick A Boomer" - supposedly an early lineup of the Marvelettes. |

Hi Mel, I've seen it written that Gladys Horton of the Marvelettes was a member but to be honest I'm pretty dubious about that. I've a provisional date of 1959 for it. IF Gladys was a member that would mean she was around 14 years old at the time - JVB as you probably know was owned by Joe Battle and was run out of the back room of his record shop. Gladys was fostered as a child - she was living in Inkster, as were the rest of the Marvelettes, which was apparently regarded by Detroiters as being "out in the sticks". I have a problem with believing that any foster parent would let a fourteen-year old travel, what twenty or thirty miles, into one of the roughest looking areas of Detroit to make a record. I certainly can't remember the record being mentioned by Gladys in interviews - she always says that the first time she recorded was the "PLease Mr. Postman" session. Davie |

in the book The Original Marvelettes by Marc Taylor which was released a few months back it tells the story about a 14 year old Gladys Horton joining with friends Jeanette and Juanita McClafin along with Rosemary Wells in 1959 to record those songs on J-V-B. in the book Glayds is quoted on this story and said she was a background singer. J-V-B's 5000 series was started in 1959 so the date mentioned is correct. |

See, That goes to show me that I learn something new day to day, everyday. And being able to awake ev'ry morning to make it on to this site. I knew there had to be origins with the Motown mystic. The truth has it's way to shed light. |
