I just heard Get Ready by Rare Earth while driving, and was again focused on the point where the tamborine drops out at an awkward spot before the instrumental part in the middle. What's with that! Couldn't they have done that better? Who arranged and mixed that one?

I really don't care for this version at all.

Definitely one of my least favorite re-makes....

No Get Ready was produced by Rare Earth. More than likely Russ did the mix since it was mixed at Tera Shirma. As far as the tambourine dropping out, I'll have to ask Russ what he remembers about this. It's possible that for some reason it just quit. Strange things happen during recording sessions. The fact remains it was a very big record for Rare Earth and launched them onto the charts.

I always assumed Gil Bridges was playing the tambourine part, laid off it to do the sax solo and then resumed the tambourine after the solo as it was either recorded live (or live in the studio) or simulated to SOUND live....It doesn't bug me

That could be Steve. again I'll try and find out what I can. The song was recorded in a rather live version kind of way, since it was something they were playing in the clubs and getting big reactions to.

RALPH,
YOU AND STEVE ARE BOTH ON THE MARK.IT WAS DONE TO SIMULATE A LIVE RECORDING,WITH AUDIENCE ADDED.
GIL DID PUT THE TAM. DOWN TO PLAY HIS HORN SOLO.
IF YOU SEE THE BAND LIVE TODAY,YOU WOULD STILL SEE THE SAME THING.
NORMAN WHITFIELD PRODUCED THE 2ND ALBUM "ECOLOGY".
JUST FOR STATS. PURPOSES.THE "TEMPTS" VERSION MADE IT TO 29 ON THE POP CHARTS,WHILE "RARE EARTH'S" MADE IT TO NUMBER 4.
IT WAS INDEED, THE SONG THAT LAUNCHED THE BANDS CAREER.

I did the mix on Get Ready at Tera Shirma. As far as the tamborine droping out, there is nothing I can do about that. It was recorded that way. I used a long tape loop of a live audience strung around mike stands in the control room to add to the mix. And that record made it to number 1.

Thanks all, makes sense! I love the song and sound. I think it's especially obvious because it's so busy, clean and out front. Thanks Russ for the inside info!

Ray....
....not to go off topic, but didn't you have a son drafted into the Dodger organization? Where's he playing (short A?) and how's he doing?
