Hi guys I was wonderin if anyone has ever heard of this Artist or Label? Songs are Will It Happen/Hey Baby I'm Coning Oh Back. Produced By Walter Smith. Songs are written by J. Gong and Freddie Scott. Idea Publishing BMI. I found it in a Stack of Promo soul 45 I bought yesterday and can find nothing on it? It is Good Soul though! |

There was a J&S label in NYC in the late fifties-early sixties. Their biggest hit was Over the Mountain by Johnnie and Joe and zel was also involved with the Jaynettes(read J n S) Sally go round the roses. |

J&S was run by Zell Sanders, whose daughter Johnnie Louise Sanders (Richardson) recorded with The Hearts, The Jaynettes, and as half of Johnnie & Joe. She started the label around 1956 and it continued through to the '70s. There's some great soul, blues and gospel (and very rare funk) on J&S and its other labels like Zell's and Scatt - Clarence Ashe is a particular favourite of mine. Freddie ("Are You Lonely For Me") Scott made his first record for J&S and he continued to work with Zell - the Lee Pratt 45 dates from 1968. Usually J&S songs were published by Zell's Music, so this 45 could have been an outside production. Why not contact Buddy Resnik in Fla - he publishes the song. He's at husky02746(at)aol.com |

If you want to drive yourself crazy try sorting out how many records came out on Zell Sanders' labels - they're a nightmare. She changed the numbering system every time she changed address which seems to have been at six-monthly intervals (slight exaggeration) or as my friend Gary of Apollojams says "when the voices told her to" ;) The 1600 numbers are around 8 years earlier than the 1400's. Then there's a gospel series ..... Davie |

Just picturing her in that booth yelling thru the walls of Fortune studios, "ok ken vee try anudder vun, eh"?? "und you vit dat shmata on your kopf, ken you move in ah bissel, eh"?? |

I was just listening to "I No Longer Believe In Miracles" by Ada Ray. I think it was on the Zells label (go to: http://thehound.net/19920215/m p3s/start13.mp3 ) Ada starts crying and then Zell Sanders breaks in and scolds her "we got a record to do"! My other favorite J&S is "I Searched The 7 Seas" by the Plants, and "Warm Soft & Lovely" by Johnny & Joe. |

I've always dug those crying records. Another one is "She's Gone" by Billy Soul on King. |
