There are some songs that I prefer to hear that are 'studio cut' that have been 'performed live' and recorded for sale. Such as in the case of the following: Bettye Wright : Tonight is the Night - I prefer the studio cut. More of a bottom to the song..'great 808 sound'... Reasons - EW&F - yes I lke the live, but the studio version is more sentimental... Feel What Your Feeling - Frankie Beverley/Maze - here is a case where I prefer the live version, which is what I actually heard first. I have more to mention , what's your favorites? SDF? |

I have always wondered if there was ever a studio recording of Stevie's Fingertips, and Donnie H's the Ghetto. |

Don't know about Stevie's "Fingertips", but Donny's "The Ghetto" definitely has a studio counterpart. It came out as a two-sided single back in '69. You can find it on several compilations these days. It's a bit slower than the live version, but has a better groove, IMO. |

Donny's Ghetto (studio version) was also on his first Atlantic album Everything is Everything in complete form. If you think Ghetto was good, try Thank You Master for My Soul on the same lp. Deep! |

I recently saw some mid-70's footage of Barry White & His Love Unlimited Orchestra performing my favorite tune by him 'Never Gonna Give You Up' live on the television show The Midnight Special. Wow! The studio recording is excellent but they really funked the hell out of that tune live! LOL. The odd thing about it is that the audience seemed as if they couldn't care less. I have an mp3 of The Staple Singers performing their song 'Why Am I Treated So Bad' live at The Apollo in the 60's. Their studio recording of the song seems rather boring and uninspired but they really get down on this live version and the band swings hard! I'm with you Dyva. I've always preferred the studio version of 'Tonight Is The Night' to the live version. The live take is good but it's just a little too long. But on the other hand I've always felt that the studio version was way too short (It's only about 2 minutes). If I would've remembered I would have mentioned it on your "This Song Is Too Darned Short" Thread. |

The original 'studio' version of Fingertips is found on "The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie" Tamla 233. This was re-isssued on lp & cassette as part of Motown's 20th Anniversry celebration. |

Hello Everyone. Rodmann .. when you are referring to the studio version of "Tonight Is The Night" presumably you mean the 45 version .. "B" side of "Shoorah Shoorah". I have a BETTY WRIGHT C.D. with a full length studio version of it and it is has a couple of extra verses and lasts about 4 minutes!! Anyway .. my nomination for one where I prefer the "Live" version to the "Studio" one has to be "Distant Lover" by MARVIN GAYE. The screams from the audience sound amazing and one woman in particular sounds like she's about to give birth to kittens!! ( Or at least I'm assuming that its a woman ). Roger |

Roger, The Marvin Gaye cut is a great one. When he comes in with the first line of the song, the screams from the audience makes the entire track for me! Right after that, you hear a little low end feedback from the monitors - it adds a little real-life ambience for me. One of the greatest live tracks ever. I agree regarding Marvin Gaye's Distant Lover. The screams themselves are an integral part of the performance. The studio version of Ohio Players' "Skin Tight" is fun and innovative, but I've never heard a live version, recorded or in concert, that came close to capturing the same effect. I find "Fire" less interesting than "Skin Tight," but it comes off much better live. |

Hey Catdaddy, Yes, there is a recorded version of " Fingertips", featured on his LP or CD, " The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie", now discontinued. Peace, Mike Boone (Chancellor of Soul) chancellorofsoul.com |

Here's my 2 cent for the day: Midnight Starr/Slow Jam "Live" is better than the studio version. Paul Williams/For Once In My Life "Live" over the studio version...mmmmm The TCB version is a close second....(I wonder about that one ??? ;-) Paul Williams/ Dont Look back "Live" The Tempts just tore up the stage with that one, no one could repeat those harmonies and call and responses ........and dont worry......cause I'm the one who loves ya....I the one who needs ya baby please....walk on........ Marvin "Live" In London the I Want You/All The Way Around/Since I had you Medley...exquisite......... Kdubya |

I don't know anyone who prefers Otis' studio version of "Try A Little Tenderness" to the Monterey Live version. And I don't want to know them...lol. |

The first version of Fingertips done by Stevie Wonder is a studio recording from the album "The Jazz Soul Of Little Stevie" with its original key being "G", featuring Harold "Beans" Bowles on flute and Stevie on bongos. The live recording that featured Stevie on bongos, playing harmonica and singing is in the key of "C" |

Yes that's it Roger. I've got the 'Tonight Is The Night'/'Shoorah Shoorah' single and a Best Of TK Records CD and 'Tonight Is The Night' only lasts about 2 minutes on both. I had no idea that there was a longer studio version going around but it makes sense because the single version is ridiculously short! Thanks Roger. I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for that longer version. |

I'm glad Maze/Frankie Beverly gets a mention. Surely they're one of the most energetic live bands ever. Im not sure I can name even one single Maze song where I prefer the studio version. |

Rodmann. I dug out the long version of BETTY WRIGHT's "Tonights the Night" this morning. The C.D. is a U.K. too-fer of "Danger High Voltage"/"This Time its Real" on Westside. Here is a site that is selling it :- http://www.cdconnection.com/bi n/nph-search?artist=betty+wrig ht&source=googbettywright The extra verse speculates about what might happen if "Momma" comes home early and catches them!! Presumably it was also on the original "Danger High Voltage" L.P. on Alston? Roger |

After a band records and releases a new studio recording, the live version will often sound so much better because they have more time to perfect the arrangement. Plus after several performances in front of an audience, hopefully they will have found new things to accentuate or tweak, improving it by the time someone decides to produce their live album. |
