A friend of mine said he couldn't wait to see it, it's been a long time coming. I asked him why would he be so anxious because if they don't have the right people on the show, it will be another Motown45.

I'm hoping I won't be wasting my video tape.

Pattie just turned out the Apollo with her WOW-WOW-WOW! performance of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (go-girl!).

Also, I loved it when Denzel Washington recalled in his youth when he first met David Ruffin. Denzel (not a super star at that time) met the tall Temptation, then, after that hand shake, David Ruffin promptly got into his SILVER CORVETTE and zoomed off. Denzel, LOL, said that just blew him away "I was DONE!".

Great show and YES this is the format Motown45 should have followed ('Change gonna come?')

Patti & Gerald Levert turned it out. They were worth the price of admission alone. Wished I taped it just for them!
It was good seeing Willie, Rev. Al clowning it up with his JB stick, also happy to see "Q" get the lifetime acheivement award!!!
Yolanda Adams & Shirley Ceaser tore it up with their respected Gospel performances at the end.

Lastly...I would have preferred seeing Al Green, Stevie Wonder, & Gladys Knight there singing their own songs, since they are all alive & well & still performing!! So in that way it was like another Motown 45, though better.:-(

Right on Jimmy Mack! Etta too, though I love Natalie for her own stuff. I also think they should have had Gerald Alston (Manhattans) there to sing "A Change Is Gonna Come" in tribute to his idol, besides Gerald can blow that song like no other! For real!!!

Great show DESPITE Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

A Susanne De Passe Production.

This one sounded pretty damn good and the house band smoked! Brian McNight is ALSO one heck of a piano player!

The only thing was that most of the performances were much to short.Otherwise, not bad.
Not great, but not bad. Just my opinion.

Legends are legends, and like it or not, Bob and Willie have payed their dues and then some.

After the death of Ray Charles, Jerry Wexler was quoted as saying something along the lines of "I have only worked with three geniuses in my life...Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, and Bob Dylan."

Bob may not have the same pipes as Sam Cooke, or Gerald Levert...but all you have to do is listen just a little bit underneath and the soul is there in spades. I would rather listen to him sing any soul classic then Ashanti sing "Rock Steady", or Natalie Cole out of her element singing Etta James.

Just my two cents...

Shoot!!!!! Did this air on Sat 6/19/04 and at what time & what station????? @#%$!%^^&& How long was it on for?? I missed it totally! I don't even recall the station if it is 4 or 11 advertising the show, which is ignorant! How do you expect someone to know if you don't advertise it. Furthermore, the times I do see the regular Apollo show, it airs after 12:00am, why does the MEDIA do us like this?????

Now, I will have to wait for it to come on again, and this time it won't be advertised, if it it is on at all. I will have to check every so often.
TV can be really crappy sometimes!!!!

Yup--I didnt even know it was on til I noticed it in the channel listings!Nor did I ever see a Motown 45 ad. I had this feeling/desire that Etta was gonna walk out when Natalie was singing. Oh well--dont get me started about De Passe.

I thought it was a pretty good show. I found it interesting that the performers weren't announced at the beginning of the telecast. Therefore, you were continually surprised at who came out to perform.

My favorite performances were those of Patti LaBelle, Yolanda Adams, and Shirley Caesar.

I also agree with Soul Sister that it would have been nice to have Gladys, Etta, Al, and Stevie perform their own songs. But maybe they weren't available. I do know that Etta cancelled her entire tour for this year because of ill health. But at least the producers didn't totally pander to ratings by getting current "hot"artists, with the exception of Ashanti.

Even though I tend to prefer the classic soul and jazz artists, as a child of the 80s (middle school, high school, and college covered 1980-1990), I have to admit that seeing Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh go through their medley together put a huge smile on my face. :-)

Regards,
Ken

Hey SS,

Patti Austin would be a great choice for a few duets with JS, eh?
Her phrasing is somewhat from the JS school.

Hi Bobby;
You could have something there, but no around today, is more from the J.S. school as Nancy Wilson.
