I just read a long article on the Cookies. Why does everyone alsways say Blossoms on West coast and Sweets on East Coast and little mention of these ladies. The Cookies did so much signing and experimentation...Their B sides were often brilliant and ahead of their time- all took leads...were on Hey Girl, 1-2-3 etc etc. Lets hear it for Margaret, Dorothy, Earl-Jean, Darlene...In my opinion they stole the show at Mary Wilson's Girl Group Reunion at R and R HofF. I just saw a CD of The Cookies on discol.com. It's the biggest collection of their stuff I've seen. I must get this one. Also check out www.doowopbopshop.com, which gives complete listings of songs. They also carry hard to find CD'S as The Clickettes, etc. (Message edited by Boynextdoor on June 20, 2004) (Message edited by Boynextdoor on June 20, 2004) |

Hey Jimmy Mack ... yes, the Cookies were great at the Mary Wilson reunion for the Girl Groups but I thought that The Velvelettes stole the show!! |

Jimmy mack, The Cookies did not sing on 1-2-3. It was the Swans and the Tymes. I was there that June day in 1965 at Bell Sound, studio A in NYC. . |

The COOKIES were a multi-talented female group, who yes, seem to get far less recognition and credit than they deserve! As a group they sang/recorded from 1954 to 1967. The various members in the Cookies during those years consisted of any 3 of the following: Dorothy Jones, Beulah Robertson, Ethel McCrea, Margie Hendrix, Margaret Ross, Earl-Jean McCrea, Darlene McCrea (Ethel). They have a huge discography of recordings, also recording under different names! As the Cookies they recorded for Lamp, Atlantic, Josie, and Dimension labels. They also recorded as the Cinderellas (Dimension), Honey Bees (Fontana), Palisades (Chairman), and the Stepping Stones (Philips). Margie Hendrix recorded on her own in the 50s and 60s to include many labels (Lamp, Tangerine, Sound Stage 7, Mercury). Dorothy Jones recorded on Columbia, and Ethel (Darlene) McCrea for Roulette, Tower, and Jubilee. Earl-Jean McCrea recorded as Earl-Jean for Colpix in 1961, and together with LaVern Baker on Atlantic 1958, and together with the late and great RAY CHARLES, also on Atlantic in 1958 "Yes Indeed" and "I Had A Dream", then with Varetta Dillard on RCA also in 1958 "Star of Fortune" and "Rules of Love". At this point I am not sure how many of these talented Cookies are still with us. I had the pleasure to have met Margaret Ross (who I know is still around) on more than one occasion at various music-related events, and found her to be still very talented, very willing to share her experiences as a COOKIE, and a truely lovely person. Most of the information I posted above is courtesy of John Clemente's GIRL GROUPS Fabulous Females That Rocked the World discography, and conversations I had with Margaret. The photo posted earlier in this thread (along with some other rare pictures of the group) can also be found in John's book. In harmony, Nikki (Message edited by 45rpmgal on June 20, 2004) |

Great-thanks Nikki. Perhaps becaue no one was as big as Darlene Love or Cissy the Cookie remained somewhat anonymous. |

Jimmy mack, Like I said, I was there. As you know , boks are not always accurate and factual but first hand info is. I played on the session and it was LIVE, singers and everything. I was sitting there between Vinnie bell and Sal Detroia observing everything. The Swans(Jean and Tina Thomas and the Tymes were on mike at the back of the room behind a high baffle. In fact, we all rode up to NYC together. Trust me, I was there!! |
