Every timethe death of a entertainer occurs, Im always left with though of who is left from a certain genre. Needless to say, Ray Charles was a mover and I shaker in music up until his death, I just wonder who is left from those 'beginning of Soul' eras...like I know of: Lou Rawls Chuck Jackson Percy Sledge Lloyd Price ...as an example. Who else is still around that was a 'soul pioneer' SDF? |

Soul Sister, great list. Im probably looking for soul-folk who reigned supreme during the 40-50-60's era...I guess some folk in the 70's would not hurt...alot of those where people from those previous eras mentioned who were reviving their careers through 'funk or disco'. |

Anybody ever hear of a cat named IKE TURNER??? His 1951 hit, "Rocket 88" is generally creditied as being the "first ever rock and roll record". Whether you agree with that claim or not, the fact still remains that Ike Turner is a true pioneer and, for various reasons, his contributions have largely been overlooked. I have a slight problem with using the term "pioneer" to describe some of the artists whose names appear in some of the earlier posts on this thread. To me, a pioneer would be someone who was actively performing and recording in the 40s and 50s when R&B first began to evolve from the blues. I agree with many of the names mentioned in the previous posts, but frankly, I don't consider anyone who came onto the R&B/Soul music scene in the 70's (or even the late 60's for that matter)as a "pioneer". Legend?, maybe. Superstar?, for sure. But, pioneer? Sorry. (Message edited by Gary on June 23, 2004) |

Hello Everyone. DyvaNaye .. I completely agree with you about LITTLE RICHARD, there is a track he did for Vee-Jay records called "I Don't Know What You've Got" that is pure unadulterated S.O.U.L. Gary .. IKE TURNER .. a very good choice. Somebody else worthy of mention has to be CHUCK BERRY .. musically I don't consider him to be "Soul", more "Blues/R&B" but IMO he virtually invented "Rock'n'Roll" so he has to be worthy of an honourable mention. Roger |
