Mel.

On the Goldmine C.D. that was issued to tie in with the Wigan 25th anniversary there is an instrumental track credited to HONEY TOWNSEND which uses the same backing music as "What Shall I Do" by FRANKIE & THE CLASSICALS and "Moonlight Music and You" by LAURA GREENE.

Is this the one that you are mentioning, and if so .. is there yet another vocal version that uses this backing track with Honey singing on it?

Roger
As far as I recall Richard Searling played the Honey Townsend inst to 'moonlight music in you'
I once had a Mala demo of it but not anymore.
Regards the other versions
if not all the I have most of them still but one that does elude me although I have the Calla 45 is a uk philips copy of Frankie and Classicals.
cheers Roger

Mel ..

When "What Shall I Do" by FRANKIE AND THE CLASSICALS was re-released by Pye on their "Disco-Demand" label in 1974 I read a brief piece about it in "Black Music" magazine ( I think) .. that mentioned that the track had been used on half a dozen different recordings .. I shall have to try to dig it out over the weekend. I think one version was called "Beautiful Day" or something similar.

Personally I think its a fantastic track ( or should that be a (TEDDY) VANNtastic track? ) and I can never understand why at least one version didn't sell in the millions.

The Record 'beautiful place' I think is what you mean Roger
it was played at the torch and is by Mark Johnson on Diamond records no.237
flipside is 'ode to otis redding'
the beautiful place is the inst as you say and was big in 72.

only worth about 10 squid today
but its whats in the groove that counts.
