Hey All:

Well in my never ending search for every soul disc ever made!! lol

I came across a small stash of about 250 60's & 70's soul 45's that had been sitting around from the mid 70's waiting for me to come and save them from a sad fate. The fate of not being played again!

I promised those little disc's if they let me adopt them I would do the following;
I will give them a good home,
I will wash and clean each and every one of them,
I will give them all new sleeves to wear,
I will play them all alot of times and
I will not pick one over anyother as a favorite at least not in front of them!!

A quick list of a few are as follows:

The Honeybirds - Who you gonna run to
Sly Johnson - Try Me
Apaches - Just another lazt day
Rimshots - Save that Thing
Johnny Adams - In a moment of weakness
Ernie K-Doe - A certain girl
Bob Kuban and the In-Man (vocals by Walter Scott) is that one of the twins from the Whispers? - The Cheater
The Jackey Beavers Show - We're not too young to fall in love
Little Razor and the Swingmasters - Jealous
The Sequins - Hey Romeo
Robert Lowe - Put up your legs high
Freddy King - I hear jingle bells
Jesse James - If you want a love affair
Kenny Burrell - Don't cry baby
The Gaslight - Drifting Away

Well thats a few that I have pulled and played so far.

Any one have any info on these artist's?

Well you know that Syl Johnson is outta Chi-town and he has many blues hits, right now his baby girl Sylena is ridng high on the charts with a couple of her own hits songs. Jesse James is another Blues artist (St. Louis ??) who has loads of talent and records for an independent label. Ernie K-Doe (New Orleans) I suspect of Mother-In Law fame recently passed away. Guess you can tell I'm rushing ...see ya

Freddy King--blues legend known for his 'chicken-scratch' guitar style (on classics like "Hide-A-Way" and "San-Ho-Zay", among others). He was embraced by the rock crowd, which resulted in '70s LPs on labels like Shelter and RSO. Sadly, he died in 1976, but is fondly remembered.

Johnny Adams--New Orleans tenor vocalist, known to many as the "Tan Canary". First recorded in the late '50s for N.O. labels like Ric and Watch, then found fame in the late '60s on SSS International (with his brilliant rendition of the old chestnut "Release Me"), then later recorded for labels like Atlantic, Chelsea and Ariola, before finding a home with Rounder. He passed away in 1998 after a battle with cancer. Another great who will not soon be forgotten.

Jackey Beavers--He has Motown ties, as he and his pal, the late Johnny Bristol, recorded the original version of "Someday We'll Be Together" for Tri-Phi (I think). After he and Johnny split up, Jackey recorded for other Detroit labels like Grandland (actually out of Grand Rapids) and Revilot, recording several singles that became popular on the Northern soul scene in England.
He went on to record for other labels into the '70s (Sound Stage 7, Warner Brothers, Mainstream and Dade), and is now a preacher down south.

Bob Kuban & the In-Men featuring Walter Scott--Nope, this Walter Scott (real name Walter Notheis) was a white guy. This group was a blue-eyed soul act out of the St. Louis area who had a top 15 single with "The Cheater" in 1966. Two follow-ups didn't chart as highly, Scott bolted for a solo career, and the rest of the group changed their name to the Guise, but it was all for naught.

Unfortunately for Walter Scott, "The Cheater" proved all too prophetic. His friend Kuban phoned the police in 1987, saying that he hadn't heard from Walter in three years and that he was worried. When they visited Walter's property, they were ill-prepared for the gruesome sight that they saw: the remains of Walter Scott Notheis in a cistern in the back of his house. He had been shot, execution-style. Subsequent investigation led to the arrests of Joanne Notheis, Walter's wife, and her boyfriend, James Williams. Williams' wife, Sharon, had also died in a very suspicious auto accident, which turned out to be a cover for murder.

On a lighter note, the last I heard about Kuban was that he reformed the band and they play the occasional gig in the St. Louis area.

Kenny Burrell--jazz guitarist of note.

Best,

Mark

Mark,

Thx for the info on Johnny Adams. I had no idea he had passed. He was one of my faves on Rounder.

Jesse James, what a singer ! I have "If you want a love affair", on a Gunsmoke LP, from 1990. His first LP, on Twenty Century Fox, is HIGHLY recommended.

Hi Soulaholic.

At the moment my head is hurting somewhat .. England were playing Switzerland in the European Football Championships yesterday evening ( Thats the game known as "soccer" in the States ) .. and it ended up being a very boozy night!!

Presumably the RIMSHOTS record is on one of the All-Platinum group of labels.

I believe that they were the All Platinum "House Band", they had a couple of U.K. single releases that got some airplay here in the 70's .. notably "Who's Got The Monster" which was the backing track of a HANK BALLARD record .. although the title of the vocal track escapes me at the moment .... and "Super Disco".

Roger

P.S. the score ended England 3 - Switzerland 0.

"The Teaser" was one of the follow-up singles that charted for Kuban and company. I doubt it's rare at all--probably very common in their hometown of St. Louis.

I forgot to mention--there's actually a book about the life and sordid death of Walter Scott Notheis, entitled (what else?) "The Cheaters", by an author named Scottie Priesmeyer. I have a number for ordering a copy, and will do so eventually.

Best,

Mark
