Hey Luke. I've got the 'Oops!, Here I Go Again' single and it's great. It's got a Marvin Gaye/What's Going On vibe to it.

I've always wondered what the whole album sounds like as well.

I have it and it's a fabulous album. It was issued on CD in Japan a few years ago. She works with her husband Greg Perry on the album.

The album was a progression from her Honey Cone days and her voice was in excellent form. I love this album but then I love Edna's voice.

Luke, it took a while for that single to grow on me. At first I hated it and thought it was silly but now I love it. It's a 'What's Going On' inspired midtempo number without the social consciousness. I have it in mp3 form so if you give me your email address I'll be glad sending it to you if you'd like.

Edna Wright

I really dig anything Edna Wright aka Sandy Wynns has to offer. What a great voice! I've always dug the OOPS album from the first day I got my copy back in 1977. While traveling in Japan I found the CD issue and I treasure it like gold. You cant go wrong with anything that has the touch of Edna Wright.

Hello Everyone ..

That "Oops" track was a big "Rare Groove" tune in London in the Late '80s/Early '90s and got issued on a couple of compilations at the time.

Didn't she record as SANDY WYNNS in the '60s ( "The Touch Of Venus" ) or was that another HONEYCONE?

Edna was also the lead vocalist on "That's Sir, That's My Baby" credited to Date With Soul

One of my all time favourite singers

Jimmy, I remember there mostly being some "buzz" about their work on gospel recordings at that time. Though we were classmates, I was not in either of their inner circles so was not privi to all that they were working on at that time. We pretty much just goofed off in class together -- :-). I was not aware of how talened they both were until after we had graduated. I have not seen Edna since our school days, but have run into Blinky on a couple of occasions since then. Lorna and Julia Waters (of The Waters) were there at that time as well. There was quite a bit of talent floating around that campus.

Wow MoMotown! I remember reading somewhere that Edna and Blinky sang together in a group with Andrae Crouch early in their careers. I'd love to hear those records if they recorded any! It's too bad that Blinky's career floundered at Motown. She's an excellent singer. Maybe if she would've been signed to another label she would at least have had her records released!

Brother Love and John, what do you two think the best tracks are on Edna's solo album? I've had the 'Oops!, Here I Go Again' single for sometime now. I've always been curious about what the whole album sounded like. I know that it was produced by Edna's husband Greg Perry. I have some of his solo material and it's excellent so the "Oops!" album must have at least a few good tunes on it.

You're right Rodmann. Andrae Crouch is who I often heard them mention. Blinky's father pastored the church right around the corner from where I lived at that time. Many years ago, when I last saw Blinky, I do believe she said she was married to a minister. But, that was many years ago.

Jimmy, Darlene's is definitely lower, but they both have a quality in their voices that is unique -- must be the genes.

The Cogic's
Edna Wright on the far left with The Cogic's, also pictured are Gloria Jones, Andrae and Sandra Crouch. Blinky (Sondra) Williams was not available for the photo shoot that day so they had a girl stand in for her. Billy Preston and Frankie Karl were also members of the group. Their album "It's A Blessing" was issued on the Simpson label in 1964 and reissued on the Exodus and VJ labels. In 1984 group members Billy, Gloria, Blinky and Frankie got back together to record an album for Nashboro Records.

Brother Love...wow...you got the cream there..thank you very much

Rodman....For me, Edna has a voice that shines whatever she sings. I think I like "Spend The Night With Me" and 'Come On Down (Get Your Head Out of The Cloud' I just like the whole album.

Mary Wells put out an album with Edna arranging/singing backing vocals with Greg Perry producing most of it. It also had the non-Perry produced "Gigolo' on it.

Any time Cher comes to this country, I check to see if Edna is backing her - I missed her once and I sure ain't gonna miss her again.

Great picture Bro Love! Where did you get the information about the pic?

Hey John, will you please send those tracks you mentioned to rodmann2981@insightbb.com. I can't believe that Edna also recorded a version of 'Come On Down (Get Your Head Out Of The Clouds)'! It was originally a small hit for her husband Greg Perry. It's always been one of my favorite recordings by him along with 'The Boogie Man'. I can't wait to hear Edna's version!

Darlene talked about her and Edna singing backup for Cher back in the 80's in her book. I figured that she hasn't did it recently because of her own solo singing gigs. Did her and Edna backup Cher on her recent tour?

Jimmy, I have to agree with MoMotown..

Darlene is an alto, and Edna is close to a second soprano. Edna's voice is definitely higher, but both of those sisters can sing their azzes off! Thanks for all the information on this thread.

Also, to my lil bro, Rod, thanks for the mp3 of Enda's song.

Thank you John. Anyone that loves mid-70's Soul and doesn't have Edna's album needs to get their hands on it as soon as possible! If you think that the single 'Oops!, Here I Go Again' is good than some of the other tracks will blow you away! My favorites are 'Come On Down (Get Your Head Out Of The Clouds)', 'Spend The Night With Me' and 'If The Price Is Right'. I've probably listened to 'If The Price Is Right' about 100 times in less than 2 days. It's that good! LOL.

For some reason every time I think of Edna I think about the story that Darlene Love told about Greg Perry and the car stereo in her book. LOL. Did anyone else read that?

Hey guys. It looks like my review of Edna's album created a sensation! LOL. To take some of the load off of poor John some of you can contact me at rodmann2981@insightbb.com so I can send you the album.

Handsome, I didn't care for 'Oops!, Here I Go Again' when I first heard it either. I actually hated it! LOL. I thought it was a little too mellow and that the lyric was silly. The melody is haunting though and after awhile I found myself liking it a little and then really liking it. It still can't compare to some of the other tracks on her album.

John to make a long story somewhat short, in Darlene's book she talks about how she gave her brother-in-law Greg Perry money and the keys to her car to buy her a new car stereo. One day when she was in her house Greg quietly brought back the car and took off on foot down the street. When Darlene came out of her house to inspect her new car stereo she saw that Greg had ripped her off and given her an old used radio and installed it with duct tape! LOL. After that she says that she went in the house, got her gun and took a few shots at Greg but she missed. Obviously this caused some tension between Darlene and Edna and they didn't speak for years. Tony, Mary Wells could have been right when she said that Greg Perry may not have used all of her production money to produce her. Darlene says that he was ripping off a lot of people so he could get back in the studio. That's a shame because he really was a talented producer IMO. I love his solo work that he did for himself and the Edna Wright album.

Darlene's autobiography is an excellent read but it's a bit self-serving. It seems as if she took little jabs at people including Dionne & Dee Dee Warwick, Isaac Hayes, Tina Turner, the other two Blossoms, Greg Perry and her own sister Edna but she said nothing negative about herself. I get the feeling that she was being honest (most of the time but not all) when she said the things that she said about them but she was also being dishonest by leaving out anything unflattering about herself.

Somebody get some mp3's of Blinky...bring 'em on.

I have her work (the vinyl actually) with Edwin Starr. Believe it or not, I don't have the song, "I Wouldn't Change The Man He Is". Anyone who has this, shoot it to me. I also don't have any of her recordings on the Reprise label. I do have her version of The Hunter gets Captured by The Game.

Hello everyone.

I was browsing through the "Soul Brother Records" catalogue yesterday and I noticed that they are asking 100.00 for the "Oops" L.P. ( Thats around US $180 ), so I guess it must be in huge demand.

For those of you who don't know the store its located in South West London .. if you click the link you will see that one of their "Famous Visitors" is someone who posts regularly on this site ( No its NOT me .. I'm not famous yet!! )

See if you can spot the SDFer.

The Brother & Sisters - "Dylan's Gospel" - Ode Records 1971
The Brothers & Sisters
If you've never heard this album then this is a must. This project was issued by Ode Records in 1971, produced by Lou Adler and arranged and conducted by Gene Page. All the songs were written by Bob Dylan and reinterpreted into beautiful gospel renditions by some of L.A.'s top vocalist of the time. You will hear the likes of Edna Wright, Merry Clayton, Gloria Jones and Clydie King on lead vocals. With choir members Patrice Holloway, Sherlie Matthews, Julia Waters Tilliman, Carolyn Wills, Oma Drake and many others. Edna Wright is at her very best on this album leading on "Lay Lady Lay" and "All Along The Watchtower", which I feel is probably the best track she has ever sang on. Sequel Records reissued the album on to CD in 2000, so if you find a copy grab it for dear life, you will not be sorry.

Brother love..

How on earth did I miss this one - probably cos I didn't look under the category of Dylan....I soon rectified it tho!!

Do you have an mp3 of Arthur and Mary.....is it really Edna and not Mary Love, if it is, I HAVE to have it.

It also occurs to me - is the Arthur Wright on those Modern recordings, any relation to Edna/Darlene?

I am sure Brother-Love is gonna be able to tell me why Edna doesn't put out any recordings these days.....I need me some Edna, so tell me why I can't get me any!! Edna was apparently at the recent Northern soul LA gathering, anybody get to talk to her?

Oh, my goodness. You guys are so right on top of it! I have got to find this one. Another home girl, Clydie King. I went to, would you believe, elementary and junior high school, as well as church, with Clydie. The church would always request she sing "The Lord's Prayer," which she did beautifully. I'm curious to know if Oma Drake was formerly known as Oma Hurd. Oma Hurd was a singing dynamo in junior high school (same junior high school as the Waters) and she would blow me away in school assemblies singing female lead on the gospel "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name." Well, let me get busy looking for this prize.

Edna at the Los Angeles Soul Festival March 13, 2004
Edna Wright

Hey John, the song "Let's Get Together" is indeed Edna Wright and not Mary Love. Mary was on the road when the session was booked and was not available at the time of the recording. It was actually the B-side to the single and Edna was a last-minute replacement for Mary. The song can be found on the Kent 003 CD "Slow 'N' Moody Black & Bluesy" from 1994. In the booklet it states that when they found the original master tape for the CD they found "Edna" penciled in on the box, Mary Love also confirmed this to be a fact. It was Arthur Adams and not Arthur Wright who sang on the record.

Sorry I haven't figured out how to make an mp3, but when I do I will be glad to send you a copy.

Brother love....you're making this Brit a very happy man.

Edna is up there with Cal Street in my book....and I am so envious that you are able to see her perform. I have NEVER ever seen her live and I want that SO much.

Are you in contact with her agent to find out her future dates, cos I would love to know if she is venturing a bit nearer east. I would be willingly fly out from the UK to see her sing live. Does she only do Honey Cone songs or does she do stuff from Date With Soul, Sandy Wynns, solo material etc

Rodman...that Japanese copy of Edna's album sold well on ebay....I reckon the seller owes you a drink..lol

Was "Mary" of "Arthur and Mary", really Edna. I always thought it was Mary Love. Her voice didn't make me think it was anyone else. I'll have to listen to it again.

I'd also like to know if Oma Hurd/Page was Oma Drake. It seems likely, as both were soul and gospel singers from L.A., and they would be about the same age. How many of the possible candidates could be named "Oma". It means "grandma" in Dutch and German, but how common is it for a normal female first name in English?

You did it again Brother Love! Man, these are some great pics of Edna! The hair's a little big on the 1994 pic (LOL) but they look better right there than they did in their 1970's heyday! I saw some pics online a while back and Edna, Scherrie Payne and Edna's daughter were performing as Honey Cone. Does anyone know what the current Honey Cone lineup is?

I've heard the two Edna Wright lead tracks from the "Dylan's Gospel" album before. Edna was in great voice and the production is top notch. The problem for me is just the songs that they're singing. Dylan's songs just don't translate very well into Soul IMO. The tracks do make me want to hear other non H-D-H produced recordings with Edna on lead though. Songs where she really got to stretch out vocally.

Gee MoMotown. You went to school with Edna, Blinky AND Clydie King too? Why didn't you catch the singing bug with these girls? LOL.

Hey John. Edna's solo album has always been a hot collectors item. Thanks to you I know why. LOL. I still can't stop listening to 'If The Price Is Right' and 'Come On Down'. :-)

I got my Dylan Gospels.......I am so pleased. Edna sounds wonderful.

Does the original album say the actual lead singers. Sounds like Gloria Jones leading on Chimes Of Freedom.

There are loads of really big names..Chester Pipkin..Billy Storm....and is the Ruby Johnson the same girl from Stax? I see Carolyn Wills from Honey Cone is there too. And Gene Page is playing the piano...this album is truely full of greats. Thank you so much for telling me about it.

Rod, I had so many opportunities that I did not take advantage of which included Motown. I was once told by a jazz musician that I did some background work for that I just wasn't hungry enough, and he was right. I let my opportunity pass by. Ever heard of a background singer named Stephanie Spruil? She's my daughter's new stepmom. It's all around me.

Edna Wright, Greg Perry are doing fine, and their daughter's name is Melody Perry.

Greg Perry said the "Honey Cone" performance was part of the Art Laboe Show in Las Vegas. The Honey Cone members were Edna Wright, Scherrie Payne and Melody Perry.

Shelly Clark (former Honey Cone member) is currently in New York City with her husband Verdine White who is in the group "Earth, Wind and Fire."

Hey MoMotown. Your story sounds a lot like my mother's. She did a lot of singing and background work with different Chicago Soul and Gospel bands in the 60's when she was a teenager. Once she started having a family she stopped. I guess it's sort of hard to pursue a singing career when you have kids. There's much more security in a 9 to 5! LOL. She still sings in church but every now and then she tells me about some of her missed opportunities as a Pop singer.

MoMotown, did you attend school with Merry Clayton as well? Now that lady can blow!

Thank you for the kind compliment MoMotown. I would like to add to the galleries if someone would send me some more photo scans to post!

Edna Wright is a truely wonderful person. If you ever get to meet her, she is very inspiring and a very down to earth human being, and really nice.

She loves reminiscing about the past and her Honey Cone days and her husband Greg Perry is a very nice man too. We always talk about the old days, and he has a lot of information about his work with Holland-Dozier-Holland at Invictus and Hot Wax.

I remember when I met Edna in 1972 at the NAACP awards show when I was only 15 years old in line waiting to get in. She and the Honey Cone were standing in line right behind me. I told her that the Honey Cone song on the radio then "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show" was so great, but I loved "Stick Up" most.

I told her that I hoped the Honey Cone would win for best girl group, but she said "oh NO, it has to be the Blossoms!" because that was her sister Darlene's group. The Blossoms had released their one and only album called "Shockwave" which is a great record.

It was a fantastic night seeing Diana Ross with Berry Gordy and seeing the Emotions perform as well as Marvin Gaye.

And the Blossoms did win for best girl group!

Hi MoMotown. That's why I always say that the most talented singers are the unknowns, session vocalists and artists that weren't very famous. Sometimes wonderful singers just don't have the "hunger" to make it to the top of the music biz or they decided to concentrate on their families. On the other hand weak vocalists might not be able to sing but they have the perseverance to keep at it until they have a successful career. I can name countless unknowns and session vocalists who could sing circles around some of the so-called "greats"!

Does anyone know what Edna is up to today? Is she still singing with Honey Cone? Solo? Are their any recording projects coming up?

Ok Jimmy. I saw the pic of Edna, her daughter and Scherrie Payne as well. I don't know if this is the latest Honey Cone line-up or if it was just a one time thing. You would think that Scherrie would have her own obligations by herself, with the FLOS or whatever it is that she does.
