Look, Ill skip the lingo, but some songs should just end...or at least be a little shorter... Issac Hayes - love the brothers intros but 'dang!'... Walk on By/Phoenix/I Stand Accused...you can cook a whole meal start to finish with Issac's stuff...lol.... Pain - Ohio Players - Its notthatit is too long, but why part one and two? Put the whole song together! Papa Dont Take no Mess - nuff said JB is the other king of Long Song... any others out there? |

Most disco mixes of the seventies and dance mixes of the eighties and nineties. If a song doesn't say anything at four minutes, it's going to say even less at eight. |

Dyva, when I first saw this topic I immediately though of Isaac Hayes! LOL. Now I love Black Moses to death but I don't have the patience for 20 minute jam sessions! I ALWAYS look for the radio edits when I want something by Mr. Hayes. LOL. Mike, I'm with you on all of those disco mixes! I've heard many a good song ruined because someone insisted on turning a 3 minute song into an 11 minute workout! My friend (and fellow forum member) K-Bee and I always go back and forth about this. He prefers these looooonnnng mixes and I like them short and sweet. Maybe he can explain what the appeal is. I really don't see the need for them unless you're in a club dancing and drinking. |

OK Rod - this is my que I suppose LOL I do like my mixes long in general and if I do have a choice, I always go for the extended version. However, as I've learned over the years (thanks to rod as well) longer is not always better...a certain 12" version of "Tried Tested & Found True" by Ashford & Simpson comes to mind here ;-) I dunno really, maybe it's my jazz background that makes me prefer those long workouts in general. If I really do love a particular song, I normally want it to go on for ages - don't ask me why - that's just the way i am LOL. For disco mixes I go for the long versions as well, but only if they have something extra special to offer in terms of creativity that makes them stand out as opposed to 7" or LP versions. Extensions just for the extensions itself don't cut it, if ya know what I mean. |

Natalie Cole's "I'm Catching Hell" (12" version) ! I played it once when I was a DJ...and the Happy Hour ladies wanted it 2-3 times a night from that point forward. I would throw it on the Technics table and leave to go wash my car, do laundry, read "War & Peace", watch a flower blossom...and still make it back to catch the "fade". |

Hi there Everyone. Here's a couple I can think of .. 1 :- The 12" version of "Get Down" by GENE CHANDLER .. I have the 7" and it is perfectly O.K. but the 12" has so many false endings and drum breaks that I find it impossible to listen to now. 2 :- The full length version of "Do Your Thing" by ISAAC HAYES on the "Shaft" L.P. .. Personally I quite enjoy his long versions of "Walk on By" etc. but this one makes me cringe .. its O.K. for 3 or 4 minutes and then goes drifting off into some gloomy psychedelic/rock fantasy. I have this on C.D. now and usually I give up on this track after 5 minutes and start playing "Cafe Regio" as a way of getting back to sanity!! Roger |

Yes my friend and appropriately so, we have him among others to thank for pushing extended play records at a time (late sixties) when this became the rage, some over did it see my post above others well... like Donny they were just dam good records......now that I think about it it was probably the beginning of the end for 45 rpm's, man James Brown would be cooking on Mother Popcorn or Superbad...and right as you get into your funk jam with the little cute thang you were dancing wit, your partner had to wait for the tone arm to withdraw and flip the dam song over to hear part 2.........and that would work fine as long as the penny didn't come off the tone arm of the wreckard-playa......those were the days.... Kdub, you hit the nail right on the head! I also love the extended versions of James Brown, JBs', Some Philly International stuff like The Love I Lost & I Love Music. I hated flipping the records over, so I started buying the albums to get the entire version. Then starting in the mid-70's you started getting 45 versions of songs vs. album. The album always had an extra verse or extended chorus. Some examples that come to mind are: High Inergy-You Can't Turn Me Off (In The Middle Of Turning Me On) Dazz Band-Knock Knock! Cheryl Lynn-Got To Be Real Handsome |

I like long cuts if they're good. Some of my favorites are: 1) Knock Yourself Out (Live and In Living Color) - Tower of Power - 23:07 2) Chamelion - Herbie Hancock - 15:38 3) Not Just Knee Deep - Funkadelic - 15:21 4) Butterfly - Herbie Hancock (Thrust) - 11:17 I like the full version of Chamelion because the blowing section in the middle that nobody plays is even more fun than the familiar theme. I also like "Sly" from the same album, but at 10:18 it's jingle-length compared to some of the others. |

I just remembered one. The Brides Of Funkenstein had an excellent ballad called 'Just Like You' on one of their albums that could've been a hit if it weren't so darn long! It clocks in at over 10 minutes and someone should've gave us a single or radio edit. The first three minutes are pure bliss but it starts to lose it's appeal after that. That's a shame because it really is a good song. What were they thinking? |

Handsome. The BBC refused to play "Love To Love You Baby" here in Britain, but the commercial radio stations, notably Radio Luxembourg, had no such reservations. Duly Noted Roger. I also understand that to this day, Donna Summer will not perform this song under any circumstances. IMO, I think the reason was, she wanted to be a singer and make it, and she was kinda forced to take the material that was given to her. She didn't really care for this type of song, but she did it, just to get in the door. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I admit I do prefer her singing in her medium timbre as opposed to her sexy falsetto. Handsome |

Sudi, My boy played the "real" Chameleon in the barbershop yesterday and the owner and I were both commenting on how long it's been since we both heard that version rather than the usual radio edit...and how well it sounds. ...and to the person who said "Stay In My Corner" is too long. You just insulted my family and i'ma lookin fer ya...lol. The Great Wall of China is toooooo long, not that masterpiece. Man, my rap was so non existent that I needed those extra 2 to 3 minutes to make my case... in a more touchy feely way if u get my drift. |

SDF, If Donna S wanted to make it as a singer and only accepted the song to get her break in the music biz, howcome she chose to keep making stuff with Giorgio Moroder for years? All he really did was was doing variations on the "Love To Love You Baby" theme as far as I see it. |

Hello again, soulful friends! Is something hard for a true soul lover to enumerate some tunes that are too long or in a subjective way seems some too long. BTW, i think in some tunes that exaspering me for to be too long and monotonus and, also, have the most interesting part at the end. For example: -"World Is A Ghetto" by War (from the "Music Band 2" LP). The intro is very good but immediately becomes reiterative and too long... And the good congas and bongas, very good latin feel percussion, is at the end and are too short! -The middle part of "Livin' For The Weekend" by O'Jays is also reiterative and long and IMHO break down the good intro and the good change of the tempo "gospel-to-swing" (similar to "Desire Me") in the excellent last part. -"My Love Is Free" by Double Exposure sounds to me very reiterative and long to exasperate me. I can't heard never the whole song. I'm sorry to say because i likes a lot the unique CD i got by this very good group... But this song is the reiteration as a paradigma! Fortunately, these are very rare cases and i can play whole soul and funk albums and CD's without problem. Peace & Soul Food |

Oh yes Kev-Lo! How could I forget about the Dells' second recording of 'Stay In My Corner'? It's a great groove but they just took it too far! Someone really should've cut that down a little bit. I can't listen to the whole thing. I always get bored by the first 3 minutes. I've always preferred their first version of 'Stay In My Corner' with the lazy guitar and weird drumming. Rodman, there WAS a radio edit for the Brides' Just Like You. It clocked in at just over 4 minutes and you're right, it was better that way. What I've heard Donna say in interviews about Love to Love You Baby was that she cut it as a demo for GM and thought it was going to be issued as a record on another artist. Georgio liked what she did so much that he issued the track as is and that's what we've all heard all these years. Of course, once the song became a hit she was stuck with it. You can find a live version of it off her live album of the late '70's. Summer says that she was bothered by the song because of her religious convictions and that's why she won't do it now. |

What's up Destruction. I've never danced to The Dells' 'Stay In My Corner' but you've got a point. I guess I wouldn't mind the song being so long if I had a pretty girl in my arms. I wouldn't mind it at all! LOL. Thanks Chi Drummer. I had no idea that The Brides had a single edit of 'Just Like You'. Was it ever released as a single? I've always figured that no one bothered to edit it because it was never a single. I guess I was wrong. 'Just Like You' is my favorite ballad to ever come out of the P-Funk camp. As a matter of fact it's the only ballad that I know of to come out of the P-Funk camp! LOL. Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns recorded an excellent instrumental version as well. It's a very underrated slow jam that I wish more people knew about. |

Got to Give It Up - I love Marvin Gaye...I love that song...but those of you who have been to Felix Hernandez's Rhythm Review at the Roseland Ballroom should know what I mean by long...doing that darn forsaken 'Electric slide' and the 'Cha Cha Slide' which is the WORST dance I have ever seen...for the entire song...drunk people stepping on your feet...people who NEVER learned how to do the darned dance before hitting the floor wanting to try it out then...unfortunately now when I do listen to this song, it has to be home because this song has now been branded 'the call of the wild' at a club or social setting..from the time it comes on: 'Chile, let's start the electric slide!'...gosh almighty! |
