I would like to dedicate this thread to a feeling you get....when youare on the dance floor or perhaps in a certain groove when 'that song' comes on....and you are thinking, MAN this is the friggin' jam!... and all of a sudden the song goes off! Then you think, why the heck did they make that darn song so short?! Well I'd like to name a few that should have lasted longet than 2 minutes...lol....and 1 second...lol.... Ray Charles - Busted (RIP Ray, but when you get into the song, it ends, man!) Ecstacy - Ohio Players - tell me this dont start out SWEET and then ends.... The Lover's Holiday Interlude - E, W and Fire - a/k/a the 'ba da bababababa song'...lol... How come they end it like that?! Bootleg! Going Out of My Head - Delphonics version - Just as Will warms up, the song goes off! Darn it! just a few...what ya'll short song dilemmas? |

Most of my favorite 60's Soul songs only last about 2 and a half minutes but boy did they pack some good musicianship and a hell of a lot of Soul in those 2 minutes! LOL. I like 'em short and to the point. That's why I've always been more of a single collector instead of an album collector. The only song I can really think of is the radio edit of Dionne Warwick's 'Deja Vu'. Whoever chopped that one up should be ashamed of themselves! The album mix is a little longer and 10 times better. I also wouldn't mind hearing a longer version of High Inergy's 'You Can't Turn Me Off' than the one that clocks in at 3:34. It seems as if the lead singer is just starting to get warmed up and then the song is over! |

"So Blue"by the Vibrations was only 1:30!!! It had only two stanzas with chorus, instead of the usual 3. I thought they had a power outage during the last 1/3 of the song, during its recording session! Also, "Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows"by Lesley Gore was only 1:40!!!! It stops abruptly, on one note. They left off the last third of the song!!! (Message edited by Robb_K on June 15, 2004) |

Hello Everyone. "Wives and Lovers" by NANCY WILSON is ridiculously short. I don't own a copy of it (yet!) but it got played on JAZZ-FM in London a few months back and I was just starting to enjoy it and it ended. The D.J. made some comment about it being only one and a half minutes long. "Girls Are Out To Get You" by THE FASCINATIONS is also less than two minutes long and could have done with an extra verse or an instrumental break. Roger |

Every time I listen to the studio version of Otis Redding's "Try A Little Tenderness", I feel let down. Just as Otis is cranking it up, the song goes into its fade. The live version lasts a little longer, but the studio cut really starts to rock and then the song ends. Drives me nuts every time I hear it. |

Eli, stay is actually more like 1:30 long. And, according to Casey Kasem's "American Top-40" show that I had to spin one weekend at work, it is the shortest #1 record of all time. The longest? Well, I won't tell you just yet, but I'm sure many SD folks would list it as one of their favorites. BTW, this data is from around 1987 or so, and might be outdated. |

Hi DyvaNaye, That's interesting that you mention The Ohio Players led Junie Morrison song "Ecstasy". I think the song takes on a real encounter of an experience. I don't mean to sound nastyish. I think the song does has a sweet sentiment. It's like two people that commiting to the act of love. And I guess we all have been thru it, it'll start off as Pleasure, ECSTASY and then Climax. I guess that's how Junie improv to the song, and the feelin'is adlib, cause no one can write it down on paper lyrically, also to the point of CLIMAX....Blah-blah-blah-blah- blah-blah, blah? I think the song shoulda been called "Climax"? |

OK Juice. I've had High Inergy's 'You Can't Turn Me Off' single for years and I've always wondered if their was a long version on the album. I've tried searching for an mp3 copy but I've had no luck finding an extended version. At least I know that there is one now. Thanks! |

Hey Rod! There is an extra verse on High Inergy's song that was only included in the album version. Damn, I should've bought that album when I had a chance. I don't understand with all these songs coming out on cd why the long version isn't incorporated on the compilation. I wish I was on "The Board" that makes these decisions, ha ha! Handsome |

Hello again, soulful brother and sisters! I don't knows if the Incognito's album "Beneath The Surface" is known by you. There are a US edition and perhaps is the most "soulful" in the entire Incognito's discography. The fact is the first track, "Solar Fire" is very very good. Is a instrumental in the same "spirit" of the most mellow Hammond B-3 Booker T Jones style... And its only by two minutes and 11 seconds! I plays it two or three times everytime because when i "captured" the feel the track is ended. The most short I knows is a acapella (i supouse by The Sweethearts Of Sigma) titled "Jack & Jill", the last track in the album "Nice'N'Nasty" by Salsoul Orchestra. (15 seconds!!) Peace & Soul Food |

I totally agree with Eli on "Stay"......so many songs of that era were too short.... Another one that could've been a minute or two longer is the Del-Vikings' "Whispering Bells"......just as you get into it they start the "ahhhhh....aahhhh....whisperin g bells" fade out........ |

Marvin Gaye's "I Wanna Be Where You Are" only ran for 1:17 on the original "I Want You" album. It wasn't even listed on the jacket but somehow got listed on the record itself. Does anyone know how this happened? I always felt it was too short and wanted to hear a lot more. Thankfully, the extended mix (6:07) on the Deluxe Edition provides for a welcomed jam. |

There's 2 songs from The 80's I recall. Johnny Taylor's "I'm Gonna Shoot To The Stars" and Gene Chandler's "Parton Me, Haven't I Heard That Line Before". I liked both songs. Who knows, maybe their we're time restrictions to get as many songs on a lp? They we're short, but we're pure and simple though with a good storyline, so a listener can understand. Kinda reminds me of how songs we're written by songwriters in the 2 or3 minute time frame, back in the day. Don |

Lady Mystique: Maybe future album pressings had "I Wanna Be Where You Are" on the album jacket. My vinyl copy that I bought soon after the album was released in '76 didn't have it listed on the outside jacket. Thanks for checking, any info is appreciated. Manny: I agree, the Incognito "Beneath the Surface" CD is my favorite and I think it's their best work. Ever cut is a killer. "Solar Fire" is way too short. My next two Incognito favorites are "100% And Rising" and "No Time Like The Future." I didn't care for their latest one from last year as much. |

Hi, soulful family! Hello, Kevin Quinn I'm glad because (at minimum) here in SDF we are four Incognito's lovers by now: Kevin Goings, Handsome, You and me! They got Soul! I'm in love specially with "Jacob's Lader" from the first time i heard it, what dramatic feel! I have more "songs" favorites than "albums" but, I agree that the most solid is "Beneath The Surface". I heard they live in the Jazz Festival of Canary Islands (Spain) the summer of 2003 in the National Radio. They played some sides of their "Live Stranger Than Fiction" and also "Fearless". Juicefree talks abut interludes! The interludes are short because are interludes (is not a joke, smile, friend!) Anyway, you have reason, "Brazilian Interlude" by EW & F is so short. And also MFSB interlude in the "Philadelphia Freedom" LP and Zack's Fanfare. Also a fanfare is short, because is a fanfare, if was long, don't were a fanfare... Better i let it, because you can tought i'm not fine today (when in reality, is true, i'm not fine today, friends). ;-) :-) :-) Peace & Soul Food |

And perhaps the most short is "Short Shorts" by Salsoul Orchestra (this is a joke, friends). I can imagine the girls who speack and sang chorus dressed with sexy short shorts, ... mmmmh...!! Hey, Juyce, you're 200% right also, brother! If MFSB have had the chance to made a live jam session improvissing with Zach's Fanfare...! This fanfare have a sentimental aditional value for me. When Catalonian TV was born, I saw everyday at the dinner hour and a Catalonian TV program of gastronomy called "Tpies Variades", conducted by Pere Tpies, started with this same person walkin a beach long around dressed and dinning around many girls in bikini and at high speed image (as a Harold Lloyd's film). The "jingle" presentation was ZACK'S FANFARE, and resulted very apropiate. Peace & Funny |
