Hello again, soulful family!

After some days very bussy, and reading and seen at TV and the papers the sad news about the "genius" Ray Charles (RIP), i'm back with another Philly trhead.

I knows, here in SDF have some true admirators of this jazz-soul vocalist with a very unmistakably voice. Sadly he is treated by radio-stations like a one-hit wonder artist, like he only maked "Me & Ms. Jones".

Billy Paul is one of the "guiltys" of my Philly Obsession (after the O'Jays).
This was at 14 years-old in a restaurant where were two Philly compilations, including "For The Love Of Money" and "Be Truthful To Me". I buy immediately "Ship Ahoy" but don't find Billy Paul's albums until appears "Let'em In". Was more later when I found some others:
-"When Love Is New"
-"Got My Head On Straight"
-"Feelin' Good At The Cadillac Club"
-"War Of The Gods"
-"Ebony Woman"
-"Only The Strong Survive" / "First Class" (two in one on CD)
-"Best Of Billy Paul"
-"Lately"
-"Wide Open"

(I hope find someday "Live In Europe" and "East"; I doubt if is worth to buy "360 Degrees", because I have practically all in compilations and singles).

These are my top ten Billy's tunes:
1-"I Think I Stay At Home Today"
2-"Whole Town's Talking"
3-"When It's Your Time To Go"
4-"Where I Belong"
5-"Billy's Back Home"
6-"Be Truthful To Me"
7-"Me & Ms. Jones"
8-"Next To Nature"
9-"How Good Is Your Game"
10-"It's Critical"

Have you some opinion, impression, top-ten (or top-five) list,...?

Thanks, friends!

Hello again to all.

Hello, dear Soul Sister:

Your list is short but good (there are a spanish aforism that says "the good, if is short, is two times good"!!, big smile!)

You made me remember in "Love Buddies". I'll try to heard it again tomorrow at the turntable, if i well remember have a good vibraphone by Vince Montana.

Here in Spain all is well, except that really, the hot summer started two weeks ago!

I've never really been a big Billy Paul fan. However, "Let's Make a Baby is awesome" and definetely the best song he ever made in my book.

Hello to all, soulful friends!

Thanks to everyoone for your response.
I'm so glad for your Billy's "Love Story", DyvaNaye.
I danced slow in my teens with "Me & Ms. Jones".

Hi, Jester. I see you loves practically all the "Only The Strong Survive" LP. Is very good the whole album. I have had in cassette and also loves the cover art. My CD two in one "Only The Strong Survive" / "First Class" got a mediocre jacket.

Hey, Soulaholic and Spookey, "One Man's Junk" is also from this same album, is not one of my faves but i don't have the lyrics and don't well understand it when i heard (if talks about a old man or about a "junker", ?).

Some of you (as K-Bee) mentioned "Let's Make A Baby" (from "When Love Is New" LP); allways sounds to me too "pop" and too "sweet" for my taste (like "July, July, July, July").
In fact the most i likes by Billy Paul is when he makes scat as in "Billy Boy" or in the end of "Malorie" or also in the end of "Sooner or Later". I have made a top ten considering the whole aspect of the songs (instrumentation included).

"When Love is New" is the same song as ARTHUR PRYSOCK had a hit with on Old Town records. The song was written by Gamble and Huff.

K-Bee,
I've gotta echo both your comments, I was also not a big Billy Paul fan, however "Let's Make A Baby" was my fave tune by him. He was one of the better sounding vocalist on a Soul PBS that I saw about a year ago... and he grows on me with each listen.

HOSTIAS!!!
(This is a spanish interjection for expressing a great surprise)
Wow, what collection of nice picks, friends!

Hey, Mr. Weldon the one you have post at Soul Train seems from the firsty 70's. It's very cool, the way he is dressed and all.

Also the picks posted by 1wicked are very good. Seems more recents.

The one posted by Soul Sister is of the little i ever saw of Billy Paul without hat!

The general comments by all made me re-consider my opinion and re-heard with another ears "Let's Make A Baby".

Hey, Roger Brown Baby is from the most "rock-soul" of the PIR catalogue. The single "Brown Baby" w/b "It's Too Late" is one of my oldier pieces in my discography.

I think Mr. "Electronic" can tolds some Historical memories...

Heres a quick Billy Paul (sorta ) related story.

On the very day that Me and Mrs Jones was recorded, there was a slight 'happinstance" at Sigma.

The studio is in what was then "skid row" derelict are on the edge of Chinatown.

As I turned the corner of race on to twelfth, guitar in hand, I saw a horse's ass sticking out of the front door of the building, WITH a mounted policeman stooping down as not to hit his head on the edifice.
I excused myself and upon entering the building there was a man on the floor of the lobby with a police dog's mouth clenching the arm of the man.

Apparantly there was an altercation between two derelicts whereby one guy claimed that the other took his radio and so he tok refuge in the studio lobby.
At the time there was no buzzer so anyone could just stroll in.

In the lobby there was blod everywhere including the hallway, the bathroom and shower, just everywhere, and so there I was in the middle of al of this on the very morning in 1972 when we recorded Me and Mrs Jones!!!

Hello, Mr. "Electronic",

More than funny, "surrealist" history. At Sigma Sound were creating a classical jazz-soul ballad about "ADULTERY" and in the door happened something that express the ADULTERATED level of our society, where (among other absurdities) have a desproportional police intervention for little altercations and don't have response for some very criminal acts!

Perhaps the police have the intuition that something "great" happened at Sigma Sound (a worlwide hit about adultery!)

Many thanks for your (as always) interesting memories.
Peace & Soul Food
