All respect should be given to a man who came from the humblest of backgrounds. Whos challenges in life led him on the path that took to him to the highest of heights. When you think of America the Beautiful today it was because of his beliefs and vision that he had makes you feel it in your heart. This country only possesses a handful of true American icons and Ray Charles was second to none. God Bless Ray Charles and America the Beautiful that he so loved. |

Soulaholic, so eloquently put!!!! I think of him and smile, because that's how we remember him, always smiling. I will be at the stores today, to get a box set for myself. It would also make a great Father's Day gift. Yesterday, I was playing the Swinging and swaying Ray Charles doll! Ebay is off the chain with records, pins, t-shirts, etc. They even have a couple of the dolls I mentioned! I hope that he gets GOOD COVERAGE next week when his services take place, if you know what I mean!!!!! |

It was something about the way he'd sang "America The Beautiful" that would give me goose bumps beyond Patriotism. |

Charise... Don't mean to open a can of worms..but are you refering to the coverage President Reagan had last week? Well I LOVED Ray Charles and was heartbroken (still am) when I learned of his death, but you have to remember that one of THE PRESIDENTS has died! Do you honestly expect the same type of coverage?? Whether or not you hated Reagan loved him or just couldn't care less..you can't expect the same amount of coverage as a US President. Don't get carried away with accusations... By the way...Ray Charles was very good friends with the Reagans, he sang America the beautiful at the second innagural I believe. Peace out! |

Oldschooldawg, yes I understand fully that a president has passed, but the media is going overboard!!!!! I don't expect Ray Charles to get the same coverage, but if I have to hear about Reagan too many more times, you know overkill is just that, overkill! I never made any accusations and I know about him singing for the president, but the media gets carried away and will still be talking about this next week and the week after that, etc. Most of America knows what Reagan did and did not do as a president, but the media does too much sugar coating for me. Like I said, I hope Ray Charles gets a fair amount of respect and coverage!! |

They're creating a fictional hero out of Ronald Reagan. Ray Charles is real - although I wish I'd never heard of him being friends with the likes of the Reagans. |

I think that his friendship with the Reagans had much to do with the popularity of the song during Reagans demonic regime...I dont think he sat down and 'broke bread' with them every weekend, per se, but Brother Ray was very much in tune with socio-political and economic patterns, 'the haves and the have nots' in this country...he brilliantly put it to words and music... |

sigh....you guys are unreal...the man is dead for crying out loud..his body is barley cold and ya gotta drag him around some more. Anyway, like I said if you hate him fine...go ahead and hate him...as for me,I am a successful black man who started a few small businesses in my community under the Reagan administration in the 80's. While of course he was by no means...perfect, I disagreed with some of his policies, but he was by far not he worst president. He was by no means DEMONIC...come on..that's a bit too strong.(so does that make Clinton angelic??) Anyway, my mama taught me never to be bitter, never to hold grudges, pray for your enemies and have respect for the dead since they can't speak for themselves. Have a great week! |

Reagan is dead, so bury him already. Ray Charles's abilities and contribution to music are manifest and laudible. Most of the tripe being shoved down our throats about Reagan is fictitious nonsense. Demon or not, there's much that can be said to deconstruct the Reagan myth, but that's way more verbiage than I care to waste on such a man. Let him rot. Ray Charles on the other hand was not an angel himself, but he was a great, great musician - a fine pianist, the most soulful and musical of singers - a keenly perceptive performer. For those to whom it is a big deal, he also offered himself and his work up to patriotic symbolism. And his patriotic expression appears to be genuine - there's no scratching the bare surface to reveal a cynical cronyist agenda. Ray Charles served as an example of perseverance and achievement in the face of hardship, not by preaching down to people, scape-goating, and blowing his own horn, but rather by just being excellent day in and day out, year in and year out, warts and all. |

OLDSCHOOLDAWG: You have your opinions, I have mine. Bill Clinton was not the subject matter here. Ray Charles is not being blamed for a thing,at least not by me... RR on the other hand did not do anything for the African American community but eliminate it, from his entire agenda of politics. My mother taught me not to be bitter and overly discrimiative and also to say what was on my mind when necessary...I pray for my enemies but it does not mean Im going to understand every move they make, therefore I will question and examine their motives when it affects my lifestyle and way of living, such as Ronald Reagan did. He was not Ray Charles, he was the head of this country and he destroyed particular communites standards of living. Guess what? I am a sucessful Black Woman with my own business and I consult with others, and his decision making processes during the 80's ruined the work efforts of many of my peers who performed efforts of grass roots community work... You could not sell Reagan to me at a Garage sale...the long term affects of his cuts are still affecting communites across this nation...and his nemises George Bush 1 and 2 are demonic as well...men on a mission of lies and lust for capital that benefit their purposes and agendas ONLY...Im about as realistic as the come, and I deal in reality ONLY, particularlly when subject matters such as this arise... Ray Charles is this thread...May God recieve his soul and comfort his family and friends who knew him well... YOU have a great week, 'bruh'... (Message edited by westside314 on June 14, 2004) |

OldSchoolDawg and TWIMC, My barber is a huge music fan, especially Jazz and TSOP. He's also one of the biggest liberal, radicals that I know. One of my nicks for him is "Conspiracy Theory". However, he is also the first to state that his business started and prospered under Reagan. He doesn't agree with RR on anything else, but he gives credit where he thinks it's due. |

I had the great pleasure of working with Brother Ray on a TV special for Motown in the mid 80's. He was in every sence of the word a true gentelman. It was an experience I will remember always. |

Just my private joke to myself: Ray Charles is the first musician I know to conduct an orchestra with his 'blindism'...rocking side to side and kicking those legs around when that 'spirit' hit him...he had the best 2/4 timing a body rock could offer... LOL. Oh GOD I hate to know he is not in the land of the living anymore... |

After reading this thread more carefully I didn't know if all we're talkin bout Ronald Ragan or Ray Charles. As for as RR, and for all of the mess has occured and on onward that's happen to the makeup the family structure. I have lots of kind things to say about Ray Charles, as for RR I'll give a kind "NO COMMENT". |

I'm with you Don. I usually try to stay away from the topics that have nothing to do with Soul music or the forum but I cringed a little when I saw the threads about Reagan. I won't say much more but I'm just glad that last week's "Ron & Nancy Smooch Fest" is over! RIP Brother Ray! |

Folks, Charise mentioned getting a box set of Ray. Well I found "Ray Charles: Genius & Soul - The 50th Anniversary Collection" through Buy.com for $42.00. That's with free S&H. All others advertised for $60 to $65. Thought it was a great deal. Very nice package and a nice tribute to Ray. I believe this thread started off being about Mr. Charles so I think we should keep it focused on Ray. Ray Charles did it all. Soul, RnB, Top 40, Jazz, Country & Western, etc. He will be missed. May he rest in peace. Pogo |

speaking of Brother Ray, he's on the cover of JET magazine, and the Jet is covering his life story as a Celebrity. |
