(hey I am the white guy on the left LOL) By the way the first guy next to Dawn with the black hat is Jara Harris of Slapbak and the next one with the white hat is Nowell Haskins of FUNK-KIN (son of Fuzzy Haskins of Parlia-Funkadelic fame)
Now here's one with George Clinton and Mudbone Cooper (on the right)just before the interview I did with them on Radio Nova (I am on the far left...) Photo is a bit distorted because it was a wide angle lens LOOOOL

Sure Juice... I spent 4 days with her and Jeanette Washington at the NSJF festival in July 2003. I have been very good friends with her because I did everything I could to get her a record deal, and she got one here in France where her solo album 'All My Funk Friends' got it's first official release... otherwise it's only available in the US as an autoproduction.
I wish I could have done even more but that was already a good thing. She got to hang out in Paris for a whole week to promote the CD and we had a great time. Now, every time I go to L.A I call her up and we go to Roscoe's Chicken & Waffle to have a bite! She's a doll!
We once went to see a movie at the multiplex cinema at Universal Studios, and she was dressed as a true funk queen (LOL) and people were looking at us...
Well I should say they were looking at her LOL Not at me of course...
I bet there were a few old time funkateers who recognised her... LOL

Yes that's how I first met Dawn because we had been listing on SP our dream date list...
And among my top 10 dream date was Dawn... LOL
She was flattered and then we hooked up and that's when she sent me her promo tape (it was still a project at that time) in order for me to shop a record deal for her... because she knew I was doing a soul funk mag.
One thing led to another ans that's how it all started... LOL

My most prized albums would be the jazz collection my Dad gave me before he died...but out of them were a serious Ahmad Jaml collection and that classic A Love Supreme - John Coltrane...my fathers album were kept in mint condition...I dont even breathe on them sometimes...lol...and he had some collector item DOOSIES in them...(I would make some folk jealous with what I have in jazz...lol....) |

I was asked for that pic to pick the rarest LP in my collection in the funk idiom, otherwise I would have chosen one in each genre... LOL
But I can assure you that this Roger LP (that's Roger Troutman way before he started Zapp) is as rare as hen's teeth... LOL (and good too!)

I must admit I am cheating a bit here because you ask for photos... I must confess I do not have a Thelma Jones promo pic (yet!) I do have a Linda Jones but I need to get my hands on it... I promise I will!
In the meantime I will post a TRUE promo pic of Ann Peebles one of my favourite soul singers...
I had the privilege of seeing her 5 nights in a row in Paris when she came a few years ago to play at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club in a classy hotel in Paris (Le Meridien). She came back the following year and I returned to catch her do her thing live.. she had a great band back then with Frankie Gearing on background vocals...
I presented Frankie with her one and only LP which had been released in Japan only and which she didn't have... that LP broke the ice quite quickly! LOL

Lucky You! I have a friend Carlton Smith who does the same thing when he meets artists...he gives them rare footage of themselves and they cant get enough of it! One person that was not so happy with that arrangement was Wilson Pickett, he stated 'I dont look like that anymore'...was it vanity or was it pain? You be the judge. LOL. |

Yes I know the type... some hate to see what has become of them... when the difference is too obvious... I must say I do not care...
They are my idols no matter what... hey I don't weigh the same as when I was 20, so what!!!!?? LOL
ON the contrary when I see pictures like they used to do in the 60's, the beautiful ones from the Maurice Seymour or James Kriegsmann agencies, ALL people looked good even if in real life (and still young) they didn't look THAT good...
Much better than today's pics anyway where the guys want to have the street look instead of being classy...

Gotta show Jimmy the one of Joyce Bryant. We have one of her from the early 50's with Jimmy, Quincy Jones, Lionel Hampton, & Johnnie Ray.
I think Jimmy said she went into the church, thats why no more was heard from her. I never heard her sing but I think he said she had a good voice. I'll ask him more later.

Yes I know what you mean... my in-laws are from Martinique (french west indies) and they do have a strong accent which my wife and I make fun of sometimes and impersonate at will...

Ya'll don't know Wonder B like *I* know Wonder B ! The man works hard for the money so he can move every 5-7 years...so his wife & child won't get displaced or have to climb over stacks of wax just to kiss him goodbye every day. Wonder B probably flies to the US via commercial carrier and has to fly back to France via FEDEX or UPS freighter after one of his wax procurement excursions. Well, touring or not, I DO have a pic of them where they seem to be singing live but it's from a TV show I believe... they might be lip-synching for all I know! LOL
Yes the tracks you mention were great...

I'll be in the city in June 2005 as I want to celebrate my 50th there. It'll be at the end of a six-month bicycle tour, riding from Taiwan - so I'll certainly need some liquid refreshments and good sounds by then. |

When is the English edition of FUNK-U magazine coming out as I'm sure a few people here would love to subscribe and contribute.
I have had the honor of record shopping with Wonder B a few times and he is like Toucan Sam with Funk & Soul Vinyl.He can just walk in a shop,smell the air a few times ,walk directly up to a pile of unsorted vinyl with his eyes shut and pull out what hundreds have missed.It is incredible to watch him in action.I have been told Air France now limits it's passengers to one piece of carry on baggage so that Wonder B can have the whole cargo hold reseved for his record purchases! |

Man...a U.S. version of Funk U ?? That would be incredible !! There's nothing like it on the American market AT ALL & I am SOOOOOOOOOOO tired of all the "bling bling" lifestyle mags (clothing, music, cars, etc.) At least give me a Robb Report if I wanna dream about 6, 7, or 8 figure expenditures.
WRT Air France...isn't Wonder B the ONLY guy that can get the Concorde airborne again ? They don't want him late returning to work if his shopping excursion takes a little too long OR if he needs additional cargo room. (LOL) |

Graham Finch (the coolccat! I like that LOL) I will try to learn about the kind of spot you are looking for... There's still a year before you get here so that ought to do LOL (I am not familiar with African music spots but I have friends who are)
As for the refreshments, you are not without knowing that french people are a length ahead of the pack in that department (if you except beer LOL) so that will not be a problem either!

Yes it has been fun going through those piles of unmarked vinyls the last time we hung out in T.O... man this was a true treasure find !
As for an english version of FUNK-U Mag it will be on the net (most probably) because distribution of a paper mag would be too hard to handle from where I am sitting! LOOL.
I had a discussion with Solomon Burke about it and he liked the mag so much, he said he wanted to promote it and print it directly in the US which would surely cut down the costs, but as of yet nothing has really happened. Plus it would give me a truckload of extra work, and 24 hours a day are already too short for what I need to do (SD is killing me! LOL)

Dear Eddie (glad to see U here too!)For those not in the know Eddie has been working with his twin bro' for the past years on a book on SLY and he has collected over 150 interviews of all the people close or not who lived those crazy years... it is going to be AWESOME! Eddie also has ALL the rarest George Clinton productions on singles including the rare Pat Lewis, and stuff I even hadn't heard of before seeing them at their crib!
That Roger & the Human Body LP is.... on the TROUTMAN Bros. label (Ref Troutman 001)!!!
So it's easy to understand why it is so damn rare! LOL (By the way it was reissued on CD in Germany on the Soulciety label but with a different name and a different art cover)
I don't think there is another record on that label...

Wonder B: I don't recall the title of the LP...but "Sting" Ray joined Human Body (seemingly) immediately after leaving P-Funk. If I'm not mistaken, this was the last Human Body LP and may have been on Elektra. Also, for some reason I'm remembering some Ohio Players/Shadow (?) connection. Some of the same players maybe ?? |

Yes she did. Her "Mama Give Me What You Gave Santa Claus" was a regular Yuletime spin. She is on some original cast recording LPs ("Bubbling Brown Sugar", "Jamaica") but she had several solo LPs on Verve ("Caribe", "In Paris") and GNP ("JP Sings Calypso"). I'm sure there's more.

Dyva: The "'Nard" CD is available via "the usual" online outlets. I ordered one last year & have been blowin' it up since ! BTW...you oughta check him out as keyboardist for Roy Hargrove's RH Factor. The CD is called "Hard Groove"...and is one of 2003's best releases BAR NONE ! |

Yes 1wicked the Nard album is avaiable on CD although I thought it was only a Japanese pressing... so it is a bit expensive unless you buy the used one :

You never cease to amaze me, not the LP but the scan, LOL, you got something of it though!LOL! Thanks for the pix. I have a copy of the album a friend burned on a CD for me. But, I like his other work better, esp. the Buddah stuff like "Baby Baby Please", "Queen Of Hearts", and my & Timothy's (as he told me) favorite "Say It Again"! Also like his version of "Just Another Guy".

After you grant Ms. DyvaNaye her wishes would you please see if you have glossys of Deon Jackson in different poses from 1966. Deon gave me about a dozen of those beautiful photos in 1966, different georgous photos of him in a black suit/tux with white ruffled shirt & bow tie, nicely posed. I think James J. Kreigsmann was the photographer. All of mine were stolen in 1974.

Sometimes it's less time consuming to post one that you find... needless to say my copy of that LP is in far better shape (shrink wrap still on) than the one I posted! LOL
As you know scanning LP's is a real pain in the ... cos' no scanner can give you the full LP so you have to combine 4 scans to get what you want... I don't have that much time... except for some of the ones that I have posted which are really rare and which I can never find anywhere else...
As for the pics I did scan them all(much easier and quicker to do!)

In the Jackie Wilson Story play that toured here last year at the Apollo, there was a scene that after Jackie had 'messed up again' and had to make nice to the wife, he would always sing to get his way...well at one point, he had gone to far and she was gonna pit him out and he began to sing 'To Be Loved'...she said 'Oh no you dont Jackie, dont start that singing again!' ..and he sang...and she gave in...Im sure I would have too as soon as he opened his mouth...lol! (Then put him out...i got sense now! LOL!)
Imagine him and Sam Cooke in the same room singing. 'EARGASM' (and the other 'gasm' too! lol!) I digress now...lol.... |

LOL Perhaps none of the SD forum users know that the logo (IPIX) is a water mark to protect pictures which are auctioned at eBay.com but I do Look closely at the arrow... LOL

Derek Martin first sang with The Pearls in the 1950's, then as a solo soul singer in the 60's. His biggest solo effort was "You Better Go" on Roulette, a dynamite ballad and a dynamite voice!! He's recorded on Roulette, Buttercup, and another label that slips my mind at this moment. My other favorite records by him are "I Won't Cry Anymore", (tho I like it by alot of people including Jimmy). "Your Daddy Wants His
Baby Back", & "You Blew It', not crazy about the Buttercup stuff though.
Here's one for you, any photos of my brother Sammy "Baby" Ambrose, I bet no has any. Dutchman?

Soul Sister, I cannot help in ref to a Sammy Ambrose pic. This is one for the Wonder B (or any of you other SD cats)! LOL
I do know that one of his 7", a so-called Northern soul classic is highly thought after in the UK. To be honest I've just started to discover the 60s because I've always been into soul/funk/r&b from the mid 70s to present date (which is one of the reasons why I find it dificult to participate on some of the threads because my knowledge is zero when you guys rap about 60s heroes! Jackie is my current fav!!!!!!! LOL |

Yes we hooked up for a few & needless to say, Ms Vonnie kabonggedd me most urgently & thoroughly. I guess that Dyva would be proud! We're waiting for you to get back to N.Y. area, you & Jim are next! I'm not ready to meet Dyva, as my head still hurts from my close encounter of the mallet kind!
We also had the pleasure of speaking with one of our forum members, Ms Lady Mystique. Even though Vonnie applied the healing touch of the mallet, I still was me. It was nice to meet one of the people responsible for all of these knots on my head. Once I got past the pain of the bumps & bruises, I had fun. However, my head is still a bit sensitive to the touch. Thanks for the telepathic noggin knocker Dyva!

Man, am I late to this line or what?! Wonder B that's fabulous collection you've got. I hadn't seen Roger's Human Body stuff since I left Cincinnati(Go Bearcats!). Bobby Glover used to hang with the guitarist in our group (Reach) and Roger eventually hired Micheal Warren from Reach as his trumpet player. My very first pro recording session was with one of Roger's buddies, Chris Smith who was trying to land a contract with Capitol Records back in '79. Soul Sister, in regards to uploading multiple photos; Try this...
1) upload attachment (like WB said make sure the pics are not to big in size/quality)
2) now CHECK your post BEFORE you upload the NEXT picture by pressing the preview button.
3) Having uploaded and seen your photo in the preview page you continue to upload the next picture in the REVISE YOUR MESSAGE TEXT BOX, (and continue steps 1 and 2 untill you have uploaded all the pics you want). In other words you upload one picture at a time, in between the pics you upload you check by pressing the preview button.
This may not be the correct method to post multiple pics in one post but it sure as hell works for me LOL
DVDmike, Please contact me my maan! I want to send you something remember? As for your question; Make sure the link to the uploaded photo is added under your text. For instence you write a small story about the pic you are about to post, then you upload the pic, then you click on preview and highlight and drag the link to the pic under your text instead of next to.
Dawn, this s*it is difficult to explain in plain English, especialy if your Dutch! LOL For example:
CORRECT
BlaBlaBlaBla (your text)
(here goes the link to your picture)
INCORRECT
BlaBlaBlaBla (your text) (here goes the link to your picture)

Quazar... I think I have the only two promo pics that were ever made... I talked with Razorsharp during an interview about it, and he went nuts when I showed him the pics! LOL He told me they had recorded enough material to release a second LP but after Glen Goins died they stopped everything and all promotion at Arista knowing that the project couldn't continue without it's mastermind...
Anyway here's a pic...if anyone knows the name of the girl on the pic... she's not listed in the Quazar line up in the LP credits, and Razorsharp gave me her name but right now I can't remember it...
$Bill I am sorry... I do have a pic of the Count from the JanJan era on Cotillion and one pic (rare) of Bohannon in the street with his musicians but I can't reach them right now...
I promise I will work it out soon!
