BET "Black Entertainment Television" just called Jimmy Scott to get some quotes from him since he & Ray recorded the now legendary album together in 1962 on Ray's Tangerine label "Falling In Love Is Wonderful". For those who don't know this was to be Jimmy's big break-thru album, considered a masterpiece by critics. Ray did an elaboration orchesrtation, wrote the charts, & played piano on it, also for those who may not know Jimmy was one of Ray's top 3 personal favorite singers along with Percy Mayfield, & Louis Jordon. The first 3 to be recorded on Ray's label. Marty Paich & Gerald Wilson were the arraingers. Sadly, this album was blocked for 40 years by Savoy owner, whom claimed he still had Jimmy under contract. Needless to say Ray & Jimmy were both disheartened and very upset by the block put on the album. Ray's label being new at the time couldn't afford a court battle. It had become a collector's item, extremely hard to find and now the same thing is happening to the CD. As quick as the stores get it it gone and hard to find in the US anyway. Enough on Jimmy's relationship to his dear old friend Ray and their collaberation on Jimmy's album. I'd like to quote a little from what Jimmy told the BET reporter a few minutes ago.

Jimmy said:
Ray WAS/IS the master of soul. Ray had a profound impact on music. He had a way of penetrating the story of a song. Just one phrase of one of his songs would penertrate and touch his audience. He was the master of all of us singers in creating a style and was a great support to many of us singers. He touched so many lives. He gave creation to so many lives and encouraged many of us to understand the music. Ray Charles was profoundly the King of us singers. Then after more props to Ray the reporter wanted a quote from Jimmy regarding the album he & Ray did together: Jimmy said it was a feather in his cap to have done the album with Ray, a great honor.

Ray will be greatly missed and has left a void for many of us from all walks of life.

Hi SisD;
I just got back from a doctor visit and saw this. Yes, it is a sad occasion. Jimmy was very upset at first and even though we knew it was coming it was still a shock. It shook me up more than him even, it just hit too close to home for many reasons. Then later I was angry over something and that dissapated some of my sadness and anxiety. Dwelling on it was not good so I got busy with other things and actually ignored my feelings for a while. Today facing it was more normal. Jimmy is doing well despite all he went through and hearing the sad news of losing someone he loved.

One ironic thing that also happened today was this morning when I got up there was a package from Elton John outside our front door. It was only April 21st. when we spoke of Ray's health situation and the unfortunate expected results. Elton had just finished recording on Ray's new Duets CD due out in August, it was the one thing Ray wanted to get finished before his time was up. At that time I heard from LA that Ray may only live another 4 weeks or so, Elton having just been with him didn't think he'd make it that long, well he made it 7 more weeks. I wish he could of lived at least another 3 months or so, that way he would have heard all the wonderful accolades, I know, this new Duets CD will bring to him. He would have also saw his 74th. birthday on September 30th. But I guess it wasn't meant to be, at least he won't suffer anymore and he's in a heaven with his mother, brother, & soulful peers making sweet soulful sounds, I'm sure (smile).

I decided to post these things Elton sent since he loved and admired Ray so much too.

An autographed glossy to Jimmy, it says To Jimmy-An inspiration to me I Love You! Elton John.

I had posted that I adore Elton John as well. He is so real.

I also tried to post a link to one of Ray Charles songs. I deleted it myself. :-)

Whoa! Those are some nice pictures, Jeanie. It was so nice that you got a chance to meet him.

Listen, I won't be posting on the forum as much this weekend. My great-grandmother just died. I guess you could say I was really attached to her on account of she's one of my oldest living relatives in my family. I used to think that she was going to live to be at least 100 years old when I was little albeit I don't think it was really possible.

This is turning out to be one mournful summer. First my aunt dies, then Ronald Reagan, then Ray Charles, and now my grandmother. Why is everyone in my family dying? Why is eveyone famous in the world dying?

All,

Great stuff - SS. It appears as if Mr. Scott is a wonderful person for folks to be so drawn to him. Just like his music - his essence must be irresistable - indeed. I would love to meet him one day.

Sorry for your losses Dinelle. God calls the good ones home sometimes before we know it. He needs them about Him.

SisD;
Thanks for the link, it's nice to listen to Ray while I'm on the computer.:-)

GoGoGirl;
True, aside from being moved by Jimmy's music, seems when people meet or have a chance to talk with him a little bit they tend to fall in love with his humbleness, & sweet way, he's open and gives generously. One day I hope you will get the chance to meet him. Now your moving back to Bama maybe when we're in Augusta or Atlanta next year.

Yes, true enough..Elton is very regular, and a caring person to boot.
I liked his outspokeness over the A.I. controversy, he was so right on. Nice he stands up for what he believes in. One of the good guys for sure. Elton definately has a true caring heart. More entertainers should take his cue.

Wanna know what? Even though I'm kind of sad that my great-grandmother died and everything, at least I can rest assured that she lived a long, full life. She would have been 96 next month. You won't believe this, but I used to think she would live to be 100. Even though I'd be in college by then.

My aunt Maureen was really young when she died. She was really pretty. They both looked really good.

I read this thread last night, while listening to Jazz FM on the radio.

There was a tribute to Ray Charles on at the time, and the show's presenter mentioned the friendship between Jimmy Scott and Ray Charles. The album was also mentioned.

I felt really privileged to have had some "inside" information on it.

Thank you Soul Sister.

Hi Helene;
Glad you got to hear about it on your radio. Special relationship indeed, Jimmy was one of (if not) Ray's "favorite vocalist", thats why Ray chose Jimmy to be the very FIRST artist he recorded on his new Tangerine label (named for Ray's favorite fruit:-)) in 1962.

Ray and his genius will be terribly missed by fellow musicians, fans, friends, as much as his own family will miss him, for sure he was very much loved in all circles.
We already got three interviews scheduled this first week of Ray's tragic passing. I know from now on every interview Jimmy does for the rest of his life will include Ray.
It's great to have so many collectors & conissuers such as yourself Helene in one place. Great minds think alike, lol.
Take care,
S.S.

We just got another letter from England and some photos taken of us from Elton John and his assistant Mike. When Elton recieved the autograph photo of Jimmy this was quoted: "Elton was very touched to have them, one photo went straight into a silver frame and he straight away got a package together to send you both". Needless to say we were please to have recieved that package from Elton, a thoughtful gesture indeed from a very busy man.
Just thought I'd share that cause it was so nice.:-)
