Brother Ray,

RIP!!!

Our musical forefathers & mothers have been leaving us at an astounding rate as of late. It's a very sad day for us, Soul heaven is rejoicing!!! Somewhere, I can just see Ray, Sam, Jackie, Otis, David & Marvin doing one hell of a collabo. I believe that they're showing all of the new jacks, how it's really done! I'm sure that they've saved a place for Mary, Tammi & special guest Nina!

Even if it were possible, our bank accounts couldn't afford a ticket to pay to see all of that talent!!!

RIP!!

what was there not to love about Ray Charles?, a musical genius demanding perfection and excepting nothing less...not the greatest singer in terms of winning a singing contest, but one of my favorite artists to listen to..he could take any song and give a most soulful take with great phrasing.

he will be missed, but never forgotten with all his music left on this earth to listen to forever.

one of the greatest ever...R.I.P...Mr.Ray Charles.

Hey All,

I was saddened to hear of Mr. Ray's passing.

Ray Charles has been called the Original Soul man - and I don't think the moniker is off the mark at all. I grew up as a young young girl - on him. My folks had many of his works - indeed.

Hey Moan. Welcome back. Mr. Ray could do it up in most categories - I agree. He could sing anything. He blew the Gospel - Soul - Blues - Pop - Country - Jazz - Bluegrass - etc. His sound was "Very Special", and unique.

Did someone mention - "I Got A Woman."

RIP - Mr. Ray "Sweet" Charles. You'll be missed and still loved.

What a towering presence on the musical landscape of the 20th century. We've lost one of the few true originals who long ago handily earned iconic status...Just think of all the singers you've heard over the years that patterned their vocal approach on Brother Ray. Some of my favorite English singers like Van Morrison and Steve Winwood, in particular....and of course, many many others.
Thank you, God Bless You & Rest in Peace Ray, there will never be another like you.

Don't y'all think this is kind of strange? At about the same time Reagan dies, Ray Charles dies of acute liver disease.

BTW, I do remember seeing Ray Charles with Ronald and Nancy Reagan. I think that those two are friends.

Good Morning All,

Again - Ray Charles will be missed - but just like all of the other Musical Greats that have passed on - hopefully - his essence and music - will never pass.

My condolences goes out to his family.

I love his version of "Eleanor Rigby", and I just love - "Night Time - Is The Right Time", and many more. No one could sing "Georgia", like Mr. Ray either.

Nite - Mr. Ray "I'm Another One That Did It My Way" Charles.

Ray Charles is the template for all singers. Ray's contributions to all genres of music is without competition, Jazz, R&B and Country. Not only has his singing talent been at the forefront but also his piano accomplishments.

Uncle Ray, thank you for being the only singer that my Dad ever loved.

I use to always say that the very next time he was in my area I was going to go see him in concert. Now it is too late. As time past, I began to think of him as real old school, but any time one of his songs came on the radio I couldn't help but sing or just sit back and listen. He was one of the greatest of this or any other time. God Bless You Mr. Ray Charles (Robinson).

He is the King of Soul, 'hands down'.

In order to celebrate him in my own way I made some cd's of his more unpopular stuff...you have to hear Ray sing 'Witchita Lineman' and 'Rainy Night in Georgia.' I have always enjoyed how he could cover a song and put the 'Ray Charles DNA' on it and make it his own...He never made a bad song as far as I can see...with him it was all about interpretation and keeping it real to life as possible...we will never have ANYONE like him again, and I cant help but think if he stayed in well health he would have performed until he could not anymore and probably would have 'keeled' over at the piano...
I am just saddened by his death because it was my plan to see him when I could...I was one who purchased tickets for the concert he was to have in NY early spring, and it was canceled. Now I know why. This is a shock for me because I had no clue it was this serious. Lord have mercy...RIP Ray Charles...I am at least happy that his suffering is over...'To Be absent of the body is to be in the presence of the Lord'...

I can see Ray asking the Lord 'ah...uh did I do all right?!'

Hallelujah, I Love Ray So!

Hello Dyva,
I was at the hospital visiting an blues musican friend when it was annouced on TV. I was surprised, and guite taken back. I grew up on Ray Charles's music. He was the last of the legends in modern day music, and I know, I know he's gonna be sorely and greatly missed.

Hi Don,

For this matter Im sorry for all of our loss on this forum...Ray was such an institution to classic soul and R&B, Jazz, country, blue grass, broadway tunes, rock...You name it.... Im just so sad, yet happy to celebrate him...

Time Magazine mentions that there will be a biographical film starring Jamie Foxx. They didn't mention if it's going to be made for TV or (I hope) a theatrical release that will invest more and receive more recognition. If someone else mentioned this, sorry, I searched and couldn't find Foxx's name in conection with Brother Ray.

My one memory of Ray Charles is, unfortunately, tinged with embarrassment for our community. He came to perform at our small town's annual "Musikfest" celebration, and seats were hard to come by.

Two people in the front row, who were old enough to know better (and presumably fans since I heard them talking before the show about Ray's work) continued to talk loudly while he was performing.

He stopped playing and asked them to show some courtesy, and I admired how he was able to do that and go right back to where he paused to give a tremendous performance. Those two middle-aged "fans" didn't so much as turn a page of their programs for the rest of the performance.

I sure hope that his dignified professionalism rubs off on younger audiences and performers.

Speaking of embarrassment~~~
Has anyone seen the latest Globe Magazine ???
with a pic of Ray Charles' body resting in the Casket? that was enough, but~~~~
I think it's terrible, how they dished out dirt about the Man before he's even in the grave... and he can't defend himself.
Again, I'm sorry folks, but his music is what made him who he was, and his music is what we should dwell on, and not how many children and wives he had...who cares ? Nobody on this earth has a spotless closet, not even Preists, Ministers, or Presidents.

Joe Adams made a circus out of Ray's funeral as the grapevine has it. He probably sold those stories to the tabloids. He only wanted superstars who hardly knew Ray instead of the people who really knew him at the funeral, all by Joe's invitation, who could attend the funeral and where it was held. The minister even had very little knowledge of Ray's life or history. Plus Adams had his name (underservedly as usual) on everything for everyone to see. This is nothing new, it has been going on for over 40 years! Too bad he was the one running the show, you have to wonder if he followed any of Ray's wishes! Thats really sad.

For some great articles from people who really knew Ray buy "Jet" magazine & "Rolling Stone".

Hi Soul Sister!

I have similar info on Joe. I don't know what was the deal between them two, but Joe was good at blocking my interview with Ray - and Ray has always been my number one.

Best regards
Heikki

Hi Heikki;
This goes way back, Joe blocking people he didn't like, Ray never heard about. As well as telling fbricated or blown out of proportion stories to Ray about different band members who either had too much power, longevity, he didn't like or wanted to get rid of. He always took credit for things he never did, one example of that was putting his own name down as producer of Jimmy's album on Ray's label as the producer, when he actually had nothing to do with it at all, it was all Ray alone! Ray's musicians and people who were around Ray before Joe, couldn't stand the man or his egotistical ways. He contolled who saw Ray by his own wims, and whether he thought the person was famous enough to allow an interview with Ray. I won't go on about this man, but grapevine, people close to Ray (past & present), the book 'The Man, The Music, The Genius' all say the same thing, he had Ray blind sided because Ray was only fed what information this man gave him as he wouldn't allow others to get the chance to talk with Ray. Pitiful.
"RC" is gone now, may he rest in peace and contentment.

David Ritz emailed me a 20-page story he wrote about his visits and conversations he had with Ray during his last months, with Ray speaking the way he speaks in his own way, his own words from things they discussed and questions David asked regarding his impending death, God, and his life. Amazing stuff. So touching & poinant. Part of it will be in 'Rolling Stone' magazine. David said they cut the article but he wanted me to read the whole thing, it was fabulous, sad, funny, and full of love and pain for the man he felt so close too since his first book on RC's bio in 1975. David & Mabel John wept together over Ray's passing. David & Ray wept together near the end.
It was beautifully written, it will tug at your heartstrings.

I noticed a quote from Ray in Soul Sister's posting, saying that if you want to write a good song you should praise a woman. That would eliminate a lot of today's music! One more message from our elders that would make the world a lot better! Thanks so much, Soul Sister, for mentioning the Rolling Stone article.

Hi Bob F;
Your very welcome. It's indeed a good article, words straight from Ray's own mouth!:-)
