HI...I'm new to the forum and I love the different topics & opinions. Was wondering if anyone had anythihng they could share about either The Jones Girls or The Emotions, my all time two favorite groups. Any rare photos or memories about either group? I do have a few rare things on The Emotions, but it's harder to find stuff on The Jones Girls, especially pre-philly intl. Thanks E. |

Hello to all, soulful folks! Hi, Everettinct, First of all, welcome to SD Family! I'm a very Philly sound obssesed and also wondering about the Jones Girls pre-Philly Intl. stuff. I discovered this gospel-flavored female group some yeras before their PIR debut in some Curtis Mayfield albums as background vocalists ("Do It All Night"). Also in the PIR album "Sit Down And Talk To Me" by Lou Rawls. Recently I see some compilations of the best of Invictus Records (by Lamont Dozier) where appears some Jones Girls material. I believe they have also recorded (appart from background vocalists, as "Jones Girls" act) at Curtom Records. Sadly, the most recently info I knows was the dead of one of the trhee. I'm waiting for a new trhead by our honorific SDF member Weldon McDougal III who says he got a lot of photographs of Philly acts! Peace & Soul Food |

On the old forum there was a thread about the Jones Girls and there was a great deal of appreciation for their artistry. I have played "The Best of the Jones Girls" to death. I actually had to buy another CD because the first one wouldn't play anymore. Such songs as I'm at Your Mercy, Nights Over Egypt, Children of the Night, and I Just Love the Man are classics and ripe for remakes as Xscape did with the Jones Girls Who Can I Run To (By the way, what happened to Xscape?). I believe that one of the Jones Girls has died (Valerie?), but the music lives on. Everyone I play the CD for who was not so familiar with them, falls in love with them and runs out and buys the CD. |

I met them once at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on New Years's Eve, 1981 where they were appearing with Peabo Bryson and Luther Vandross. I had a major crush on Valorie, I thought she was sooooo fine! I was very saddened by her passing. I got to meet them through a friend of mine, the bassist Charles "Chuck-A-Luck" Hosch. I learned that they were major Emotions fans. |

Oh, I forgot to mention that Chuck-A-Luck was playing with The Emotions at that time. Their road rhythm section then was the late Terry Marshall on keyboards, Joey Hutchinson and Keith Henderson on guitar, Chuck-A-Luck on bass and Donzell Davis on drums. |

Wow..Thanks to those who have contributed to this thread....This is great. Yes, unfortunately Valorie did pass..but the music lives FOREVER. The Jones girls do have a cd that came out in England called KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES and it's about 20 songs that were recorded PRE Philly...Songs form Curtom, Invictus and other early labels and some of the songs are EXCELLENT. The Jones Girls Philly years produced some wonderful music...they were one of the few groups who you could listen to an entire album and enjoy each and every song. From their first album, my favorite song is LIFE GOES ON (such a personal song for me).... Yes, The Emotions are very active again.. Check out their website at http://www.theemotions.net. The pics on here are GREAT..I love it!! Everett |

Well I bought the Jones gril best of. Hmmmm-so far pretty good. Snesatinal harmonies-some good material some weak--just like the Emotions records! Hadnt heard I Just love the man for years--knocked me out! Teriffic liner notes. I bought the Supremes and Tempts complete duets and their liner notes pale in comparison! Why cant Motown put print on color u can read consistently, especially for those of us over 40!!! |

Hello again, soulful folks! I likes all the tunes you all mentioned, friends. Also have another with a title some "disapointed", Ah Ah Ah Ah, I likes a lot. Hi, Gil, I don't knows about you says. I read in a web-site that she was in Paris at this time. One thing that intrigued me of their discography is the title "At Peace With Woman", if firstly was the "Old San Juan" instrumental by MFSB or the one by The Jones Girls (the music is the same). Peace! |

Hey 2 of my favorites groups. The Emotions no matter what combonation, These ladies can sing. I recently heard a grouping of Wanda, Jeanette Z& Pamela. Jeanette & Pam sang Shiela's leads. Pamela did good, but Jeanette was out of this world. After listening to this concert, I wonder why they didn't use her more as lead vocalist. I witness the Jones Girls right before Valerie past. The ladies performed in Los Angeles. Brenda's oldest daughter stood in for Valerie because she couldn't make it the gig. They never said the reason why. Brenda's daughter who was quite shy, stood in very well for her aunt. I try to catch these groups every chance I get. The Emotions are pretty active and are singing quite well. Right now it's Pam, Sheila & Wanda and they sound great. I have quite a few bootleg concerts on the Emotions. It was mention that there were 4 Jones girls. I think they ment the Emotions. At one time all 4 sisters graced the stage together |

Before the Jones Girls hit it big at Philadelphia International they toured as backup with Diana Ross. They were absolutely glorious looking and sounded fabulous. When I first saw Diana with the Jones Girls they were more focal in the stage arrangement and Diana introduced each one of them. By a about year later when I saw Diana, the Jones Girls were in the back, in black, and Diana did not mention them. LOL!!! Lucky for the talented ladies that they went on to have their own hits and did not have to tour as backup for anyone. |

Hi Manny..YES, AH AH AH AH is a HOT song...with lead vocals by Brenda....Shirley usually sang most of the leads, but listen to some leads by Valorie & Brenda and any of the girls could hold the lead. Brenda sings lead on I CLOSE MY EYES with Adlibs by Shirley; Valorie is featured on At Peace With Woman (which is an old MFSB song that Kenny Gamble loved some much, he added lyrics); and Valorie can also be heard on WHEN I'M GONE. The current Emotions are Wanda, Pam & Sheila..and I saw them a few months back and was blown away. They were on the Dells 50th Anniversary Tour and the ladies TORE IT UP. Stage presence; vocals; class, style...Boy, these young groups have SO MUCH to learn. (Message edited by everett860 on May 31, 2004) |

Hi again, soulful friends! Hi, Gil, this add some "romantic" connotations in the sad history. BTW, perhaps somebody here in SD can to confirm this information. Frequently, web sites (and books also!) says unexact or untrue things (?). Hi, Everettinc, You have responding to me doubt about "At Peace With Whoman" song. Thanks. I apreciate much if somebody who have heard the PIR album by Shirley Jones solo can told his opinion. I have "She Knews About Me" and "Do You Get Enough Love" in a various artists compilation and, IMHO, are two five-stars mellow ballads! Peace & Soul Food |

Manny, Shirleys solo cd was Philly Soul at its best. It of course had the #1 hit DO YOU GET ENOUGH LOVE, keeping Anita Bakers SWEET LOVE from going #1... Side one was ROMANCE and had 4 ballads, DO YOU GET ENOUGH LOVE; SHE KNEW ABOUT ME; LAST NIGHT I NEEDED SOMEBODY & BREAKIN UP; Side 2 was Dance and had some great songs as well. Shirley also released a solo cd in England called WITH YOU; and there is a Jones Girls cd that was released in England as well called COMIN' BACK. Everett |

Hello Everyone. I've been an EMOTIONS fan ever since I first heard "Show Me How" back around the end of 1971 .. that song does very strange things to me even now!! I've been a JONES GIRLS fan ever since I first heard "You're Gonna Make Me Love Someone Else" around 1979 .. although I'd actually seen them "live" backing DIANA ROSS on her "Evening With Diana Ross" tour at De-Montford Hall in Leicester back in 1976 .. from what I recall of the night, during the extended instrumental break of "Love Hangover" Diana left the stage and the Jones Girls sat there reading magazines!! To me they sound very very similar and I love them both, but I think THE EMOTIONS slightly edge it for me as they were around first!! For those interested in THE JONES GIRLS early material I would heartily recommend "Its Your Love That Controls Me" on Music-Merchant(Invictus) .. a nice Mid-Tempo Detroit groove!! I see SHIRLEY JONES has had a mention for her solo L.P. on Philadelphia International .. I'm lucky enough to have a copy of that and yes, it is very good. So ... to redress the balance a bit towards THE EMOTIONS I would like to point out that SHEILA HUTCHINSON had a solo single released in the late '80s called "Keep A Little Lovelight Burning" .. I'm lucky enough to have the 12" of that and its a very nice "Emotions Styled" ballad. I've found a biography of her which mentions it as a "Mid 80s" release, but I would put it as 1989 as I heard it and bought it after I moved to London, and that was in 1988!! Heres the link to SHEILA HUTCHINSON's biography. http://dochive.netfirms.com/bi ographies/shutchinson.html Roger |

For Manny...Valerie's actual obituary: Valerie Jones, sang with Jones Girls By Tom Greenwood / The Detroit News DETROIT -- As one of three sisters in the group The Jones Girls, recording artist Valerie Jones was known as the shy one who preferred attending college as a business major rather than working as an entertainer. Known for their harmonizing, Ms. Jones and her sisters, Brenda and Shirley, sang backup for numerous Motown artists. The Jones Girls made four albums for Philadelphia International Records in Los Angles, and had a smash disco hit with You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else in 1979 and another hit with Nights Over Egypt. Ida Johnson, a family friend, met Valerie Jones and her sisters when they were just little girls. "Their mother was a gospel singer and one day she brought in these three little girls who had harmony even then," Johnson said. "I played the organ with them and soon we were singing at different churches on the weekends. Even then they were something to behold." A native Detroiter, Ms. Jones died on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Sinai Grace Hospital. She was 45. The cause of her death has not been determined. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Russell Street Baptist Church, 8700 Chrysler Drive, Detroit. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the C.W. Morris Funeral Home, 12700 Hamilton, Highland Park. Survivors include her mother, Mary Frazier Jones; a son, Felton; and her sisters, Shirley and Brenda Jones. Burial will be at Lincoln Memorial Park, Clinton Township. You can reach Tom Greenwood at (313) 222-2023 or commuter@detnews.com.

What's Up Everyone! I enjoyed the Jones Girls & Emotions as well. I see someone has mentioned one of the songs I like by the Jones Girls-I Close My Eyes. My other favorites include: You're Gonna make Me Love Somebody Else This Feelin's Killing Me We're A Melody (which kinda reminds you of the Three Degrees-When Will I See You Again (same key I believe...Eli???) Who Can I Run To Children Of The Night Dance Turned Into Romance When I'm Gone I Just Love The Man Nights Over Eygpt The World Will Sing Our Song Win U Back Baby, I'm Yours Knockin' (Valorie does a great lead on this) On Target Why You Wanna Do That To Me Ahh, Ahh, Ahh, Ahh I also have the cd, Keepin' Up With the Jones', which contain their early work with Music Merchant/Invictus & Curtom recordings. Also everyone knows they were sessions singers in demand. Here are some artists & the songs you can hear the Jones Girls vocals on: Le Spank-Le Pampamousse Time Is Running Out-Brass Fever Love Hangover-Diana Ross Runaway Love-Linda Clifford Like A Natural Man-Lou Rawls The Sweetest Pain-Dexter Wansel We Don't Have To Talk About Love-Peabo Bryson (Brenda & Valorie Jones) My question is still, Has it been disclosed the cause of Valorie's death? Hello again, soulful folks! Hi, Handsome, I think the female voice in Dexter Wansel's "Sweetest Pain" is by Terri Wells. I can't check it because i can't start the turntable at this time. Excuse me if i'm wrong (as frenquently!, smile!) I forget to enumerate my favorite Jones Tunes! - (Ah Ah Ah Ah) I have mentioned in a previous post -Nights Over Egypt (this is one of the rare cases wich I likes two versions at the same level: the original by the Jones Girls and the one by Incognito) -You Made me Love You (the voices, the horn section and the bass at the last part is from the most funky in the PIR catalogue!) -You Can't Have My Love (the intro is bombastic) -I Found That Man Of Mine (the organ is very good as the voices) About Valorie (RIP), somebody knows if she was in Paris little before she passed away? I can't remember where i read that she was in Paris at this time. About The Emotions, this is another legendary (and longevy!) female group that allways deserved my respect and admiration, despite the fact i'm not a fan. I likes a lot their "My Honey And Me" and their voices in EW & F's "Boogie Wonderland". Peace & Soul Food |

The Jones Girls did background on the ROSS album...(I think that's the name of the album)..its the YELLOW cover....They sing background on NEVER SAY I DON'T LOVE YOU and a few other tracks..... Of course they did background for Dexter Wansel (sweetest pain & my favorite disco); they worked with Glenn Jones (I am Somebody); Norman Conners (Handle Me Gently and others); Jean Carn (Mystic Stranger and many others); Teddy Pendergrass (Can We Try); and this list can go ON & ON & ON.... Their vocals on IF MY FRIENDS COULD SEE ME NOW are incredible.... The Jones girls also did some great background vocals on Norman Conners records...check out HANDLE ME GENTLY...written by the Jones Girls, but lead vocals by Ada Dyer... |

That's great news. What line-up appears on that cd? and is there a link so that I could order it. I am a very big fan of theirs. Just caught their act recently and got into it with the sound guy because Pam's mic was not on for the first 2 1/2 songs |
