Jimmy Mack: I can't take the time now to think hard about a top ten, but if I did, I'd put "I Only Want to Be With You" and "All Cried Out" by Dusty Springfield ahead of "Stay Awhile", as I feel they have more of a general soul feel. "Stay Awhile" has more of a Philles Girls Group feel to it. Actually, all three of them would surely be on my top ten, along with "Girl Watcher", "You Can Lump It" by The Seminoles, "Baby I Miss You", by Tommy Good, "Whisper You Love Me Boy", "Don't Be Too Long" and "From Head To Toe" by Chris Clark. That's already nine. I'd better leave room for all those I've forgotten. I'd surely love to add "(Just Like) Romeo And Juliette", -but that's only because of The Funks great playing and Sonny Sanders' great arrangement, and Bob Hamilton and Freddie Gorman's great songwriting; - not because of a super-strong soulful vocal by The Reflections.

I like The Righteous Brothers.
I don't like Roy Head, not the The Young Rascals much either, (although they did a pretty good job on "People Got To Be Free").

Kdub

See I told ya'll this was tough as soon as I posted I remembered one of the best blue eyed singers, I am greatly embarrassed for not mentioning her for all the pleasure she has given me through her song stylings and that is the most precious Lisa Stansfield. She can hold her own with anyone, actually she took up a lot of slack when Teena was on her sabbatical.

Like your music, your pictures got soul!
I believe in the front place are the Ingui brothers (left and right) and, in the middle, Neil Larsen (?)

Also I believe Classic IV featuring Dennis Yost are a "blue eyed" act. In this case, I wanna add as special mention in my top ten for their fantastic "Stormy". If is not the case, simply, is another soul great tune favorite of mine.

This is an interesting thread. I was surprised that so many regard "Groovin'" as blue eyed soul. I'm not sure we came to that conclusion in the UK, but on reflection, it certainly is.

Regarding that record, did anyone else mishear a key lyric in there, that fueled their pre-teen sexual fantasies....?

"Life could be ecstacy,
You and me and Leslie"

By the way.... for blue eyed soul, we've always had a huge regard here for Dean Parish, my fave being "Determination".

Eli - Thanks for the Hall & Oates info!

Which reminds me that I have to pick up some tickets for the Hall & Oates/Michael McDonald/Average White Band show for my Mom's birthday. It should be great!

I think Felix was singing about his love for his Leslie rotating organ speaker for his Hammond B-3! (Just kidding)

Hello Everyone.

I don't really like "Top 10s" or "Top 5s" or "Top" anythings, as I always find that I end up changing them from week to week ..

So here are 10 "Blue Eyed Soul" tunes that I think ( this week )are worthy of mention.

1 : "Clap Your Hands" - MANHATTAN TRANSFER
On Atlantic from 1975(ish) before they became very successful.

2 : "I Love The Life I Live" - TONY MICHAELS
A solo effort from one of THE REFLECTIONS on Golden World and ( I believe ) the vocal of "Hungry for Love" by THE SAN REMO STRINGS.

3 : "Spooky" - CLASSICS FOUR.
Manny .. I've never heard the CLASSICS FOUR version of "Stormy" ( Hint ), as it was never a hit in the U.K. I only know the versions by THE SUPREMES ( Motown ) and BILLIE ECKSTEIN ( Stax/Enterprise).

4 : "I Wanna Go Back There Again" - CHRIS CLARKE.
( Classic Motown at its finest!! )

5 : "Feel The Real" - DAVID BENDETH.
I know NOTHING of this artist except that this Jazz/Funk gem got released in the U.K. on Sidewalk records in 1978 and made the charts!!

6 : "Girl Watcher" - THE O'KAYSIONS
Still can't believe this group were white, It is just so good!!

7 :- "The Letter" - THE BOXTOPS

8 :- "Don't Bring Me Down" - CHARLIE RICH
A Hi recording as mentioned on the recent CHARLIE RICH thread.

9 :- "All Around The World" - LISA STANSFIELD
When she recorded this she was quite famous in the U.K. as she had presented a childrens T.V. show, seeing as I didn't watch the show back then I'd never heard of her so it came as a surprise when I saw her picture on the cover of the 12"!!

10 - "Big Thing" - BLUE ZONE.
When I moved to London in 1988 I found myself listening in the mornings to a Pirate radio station that played "Rare Groove" .. 95% of the music was mid-late '70's soul ( WILLIE HUTCH, NATURAL FOUR, LEROY HUTSON etc. etc. ) but there were two new releases that they played incessantly .. one was "Fair Play" by SOUL-II-SOUL, the other was this. Oh yes .. and the lead singer was someone called LISA STANSFIELD.

Spiral Staircase is rarely mentioned in the B-E-S forums...I love this group. 'More Today Than Yesterday' is a song that has been long part of my repitoire for years...and it is a song that I can sing on a day by day basis if I hear it once in a week. Love it!

Manny:
I believe the Soul Survivors picture is this:

Bottom - Charlie Ingui, Neil Larson, Michael Ziegler

Top - Fred Beckmeier, Steve Beckmeier, John Dzubak, Richie Ingui

The Beckmeier's and Neil Larson came over from the group Full Moon.

Thanks, friend Kevin!

I apreciate much this info. I likes both, Soul Survivors and Neil Larsen (and his collaborations with Buzz Feiten).
In fact, one of my all-time favorite Lp's, "Truth Is The Power" by Migthy Clouds Of joy features Steve Beckmeier and Neil Larsen on guitar and keyboards respectively, and curiously have some very good mid-tempos as "I'll Keep My Light In My Window" that sounds very similar in "spirit" to "City Of Brotherly Love" by Soul Survivors.
The solo album by Neil that includes "Sudden Samba" is another in my extra-long list of hard to find albums!

BTW, Kevin, I see you are "arriviste" and this is only the five post you send. Pardon-me if i don't remmeber you if you're here since the old forum. Anyway, recieve my friendly welcome!

Thanks again & best regards

Gonna sound a little silly but the new single from UK pop idol Will Young is a lovely slice of blue eyed summer soul. It's called Friday's Child, from the album of the same name. The rest of the album is very poppy though.

Also the new album from Tim Dillinger is well worth checking out. The album is called Love Is On My Mind. He has a web-site at www.timdillinger.com and you can hear snippets of all the tracks from the album.

Great blue eyed soul, and he is a native from St Petersburg, Florida.

Well worth listening to, and people like this need your support, right here, right now.

Great to look back, but no harm in looking forwards either.

In response to Soul Survivor, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. That record united my entire family, the beat, piano, bass line drove us absolutely batty, my Mom, grandmom, Pops and all my brothers and sisters would just jam (dance)to that song until the vinyl became white and then we went bought another one. Living in a major urban area, just a stones(really) throw from a major expressway didn't hurt either.
