When I was an infant, there was a very sweet young lady who used to visit my home. She was the girlfriend of my uncle & she'd pick me up & play with me. As I sat in her lap, I thought that she was such a sweet lady. One day, my uncle brought over a 45 that she had made. As usually happens, after awhile, we didn't see her anymore. I knew her as Rita Coleman, the music industry knew her as Roddie Joy. I've always wondered what happened to her, where she is & how she's doing? It seems as though she has a little popularity among the Northern Soul fans. Is there anyone here who can shed a little light on Roddie Joy? Has anyone heard anything about her? She was vcery nice & I was just wondering if she's doing well? |

Hi Juice, THANK YOU ! - Roddie Joy's records are loved over here by both the Northern Soul crowd and girl group collectors but nobody knew who she was - your post is the first time I've seen her real name. SHer first records were on Leiber and Stoller's Red Bird label and then she transferred to Parkway for three singles - she seems to have dropped out of the business when Cameo / Parkway went bankrupt. All of her records were written /produced by Mike Lewis and Stu Wiener, a New York team who'd sang in white doowop groups before concentrating on a back-room role around '64. I'll post a Roddie Joy discography after I've checkd my notes. Now that I have another name to work on I'll see if I can track down any more info. but I suspect that after six singles and two labels going bankrupt on her she probably gave up on the music business to get married, have kids and lead a normal life. Thanks a lot for the info Davie. I'm glad to know that my story helped in some way. So often, I've thought about trying to contact her somehow. At the time, she was living in New York. However, it was so many years ago & I somehow doubt that she'd remember a little 4 year old from those days. It's too bad, I'd just like to say hi & thank her for being so nice to a little fella. I'd also love to hear that life has turned out well for her & that she's not forgotten. Has anyone in the Northern Soul circle ever corresponded with her? I would imagine that she'd be pleased to see that she's still remembered & talked about after all of these years. I sure wish that some info about her would surface. Davie, I sure help that the little info I've given leads to some sort of breakthrough! That would be nice |
