Just how many of Junior's great hits did the All Stars actually play on?
I know that Benny Benjamin was drafted in to play on Shotgun (before James Graves had joined the group)...but were the Funks mainly used for later recordings on Jr in the 60s??

Mike...good question. I don't know for sure how much of Junior's work was actually backed by the All Stars and how much was the work of the Funk Bros., but my untrained ear tells me a lot of it was done by the Funks. Seems like I've read in a couple of different sources that the Funk Bros. did most of the instrumental backing for Jr. Walker. I'm not saying that none of the All Stars ever recorded their own tracks, but I can definitely hear some very familiar guitar, bass and drum licks on most of their tunes.

I'm up in the air about this one 'cause I recently ran into a clip of Jr Walker with the All Stars playing live on a TV show (I don't know which one). The sound of the band was dead on to the record with a couple of minor changes. It leads me to believe at least some of the All Stars were involved in the recordings.

Junior Walker & The All Stars we're a band & I do think The Funk Bros we're used to record while The All-Stars we're the live band. But that was Motown's way of doing I suppose.

I hear The Funks playing on several of jr. Walker & All Stars later cuts. That doesn't mean that the entire All Stars didn't play on them also. maybe Funk Brothers' tracks were added later to fill out the sound, making it more mid-late sixties Motownish?

JUNIOR WAS THE MAN, HE PLAYED THE SAX SOLO ON ONE OF MY TUNES, "LET'S ROCK TILL WE'RE SATISFIED" FROM MY "ONLY LOVE" ALBUM WHEN HE AND I WERE ON WHITFIELD RECORDS. HE WAS A GREAT GUY AND A LOT OF FUN TO WORK WITH.
