I really like Kim and Marvin and of course I love Marvin and Diana, but it was Marvin and Tammi who had the true magic....Mary and Marvin were great too....

I love the dub/remake of Betty Wright and Marvin singing
"Distant Lover" as a duet..

What's up Jimmy,

As regards the Marvin & Oma pairing, it chagrins me to have to tell you that you missed absoulutely nothing. While I'm sure that Oma Page/Heard was likely a very nice person, the material that she recorded with Marvin was absolutely insipid! Don't worry about what you missed, you missed nothing, as those are easily some of Marvins' worst recordings. Check out the first 4 CD box set if you don't believe me. The two songs, Rilleh & another one whose title escapes my memory at the moment, simply annoy me. Whoever came up with those songs was attempting to be cute. Marvin would sing a line to her & she'd respond "Rilleh", as if to say "Oh really, sure you do".

If you hear those songs, remember that I warned you about them!!! Sometimes in life, we wish that we could have a do-over, like when we played Softball as kids. Well, these songs fit that category, I'm sure that all involved would have liked to have a do-over. That's why they were never released, IMHO, they were an embarassment.

Jimmy, if you want to hear Marvin and Oma Page, you'll have to get the great 4 CD Box Set "The Marvin Gaye Collection", that have plenty of other unreleased tracks.
Sorry, Juice, but I love the 4 songs Marvin and Oma did together, especially "So good to be loved by you", and the beautiful "Was it a dream". If you take time to re-listen to them, maybe you'll change your mind ? :o)

It sounded to me as if the Marvin & Oma material
was either recorded, but unreleased by Marvin
& Mary, or intended for Marvin & Mary as Oma is
singing just like Mary Wells on these tracks.
Isn't Oma the one who lost out at Motown when
they put her up in a hotel on a strict diet
and then an executive went by to see her and
found her eating a big package of chocolate
bars? Not trying to be funny here, but that
IS a story I really heard.

Randy, I read the story about the candy bars in the book CALL HER MISS ROSS. But from what I remember, it wasn't Oma. It was another name. I think it was Oda Barr or something like that. Of course, the name could have been changed.

In order of my Marvin duets preferences:

#1 Marvin and Tammi
#2 Marvin and Kim
#3 Marvin and Diana
#4 Marvin and Mary

Hi Phil,

I'm a fair minded guy, so I'll take your advice & give it another listen. Maybe the passage of time will lessen the pain that I felt upon my first listen. It's possible that the songs just sounded weak in comparison to all of those hits. Maybe the other 3 may sound better to my ears these many years later.

Now understand, I really wanted to like those songs. I'm not wrapped up in just the hits. I loved discovering music that I never heard before. I loved it when Motown & others started opening up those vaults, especially Stax. So, I'm willing to take your advice. Except for Rilleh!!!! I rilleh get violently ill when I hear Rilleh. Rilleh, I do. I put that song in the category of Worst Motown Recordings...that & Down And Under When You Limbo.

Please, don't ask me to listen to those 2 songs. You couldn't possibly be that cruel!!!

:-)

Hi Juice, I never wanted to be that cruel to you !
I agree, "Rilleh" is the less interesting song of the four, but try the others !

Reese, you could be right! Perhaps it's not the
same singer. I can't remember. But I do say
this Oma sure sounds an awful lot like she's
singing like Mary Wells.

Its the same artist, she was one of many that Motown was going to try & make their "new" Mary Wells. Some articles called her Oma Page, some Oma Heard some misprinted the name as Oda but its the same artist they are talking about.

Is that the one that got a Motown pink slip because of her weight?

Last night I again listened to "So Good To Be Loved By You" By Marvin Gaye & Oma Page. This was recorded June 1964 while Mary Wells & Motown were having their court battle. The song seems to be in Marys' key, Oma trys to phrase like Mary...maybe Oma was just the session singer for Mary to learn the song OR maybe Marys voice was just taken off the track(like they did to "Whisper You Love Me, Boy" & "He Holds His Own"). The other interesting thing to think about is why would Motown pair their male star with an unknown singer for possible commercial release? This trackis produced by Gordon/Davis..who were hot at the time with "Every Little Bit Hurts"Brenda Holloway...why wouldn't they pair Marvin with her & capitalize on the fact she had a hit? Many strange things surrounding Marys' exit.

Oma Heard/Page was from L.A. I believe Hal Davis and Marc Gordon (L.A. Jobete writers) produced her release on VIP. When Motown was looking for somone to replace Mary in the duets with Marvin, Hal Davis probably thought he'd give Oma a try. I'm guessing that those recordings were just "tests" to see how she'd do. They sound like they were written with Mary in mind, and possibly took Mary"s voice off, and had her record over it. I wouldn't be surprised if she recorded hers in L.A., and she and Marvin didn"t sing together.

Yes, Robb to me it sounds like it might have been recorded in LA. Mary Wells stated to me many years ago that while at Motown she only recorded in Detroit AND that she and Marvin did NOT record thier duets at the same time because they were always on the road.
